"The Goddess of Corruption." Hope repeated Swan's words beneath her breath before slowly lowering to her haunches. "Swan, this goes against moons of history within our clan. Are you certain this is accurate?"
Swan looked at Hope's defeated gaze with both reluctance and empathy before softly nodding. "I've never been more sure of anything. Did Gala describe what happened to her and Nona?"
"Not in great detail. Baby and Bear would know more, but based on the condition of the forest and how distraught those two looked when they arrived, I don't think they're going to be ready to talk anytime soon. And I don't blame them." Hope had risen to her paws and padded towards one of the trees that had been snapped in half, pressing her paw against it. The bark bristled against her paw, like a splintered kiss. She quickly jerked her paw back when a green spark popped against her paw, stinging like a shock of electricity. Hope's eyes glossed over slightly at the pain. After a moment, she lowered her paw to the ground, realizing something.
"That's only a fraction of what Baby and Bear must've felt." Hope muttered to herself, grimacing at the thought. Swan, curiously looking at the leader, walked up beside her and pressed her nose to the tree.
She wasn't sure what she was expecting, but perhaps her prophetic talents could better decipher it. However, a physical shock didn't greet her. Instead, her body was suddenly frozen, the pupils in her eyes shrinking. Hope immediately took notice, taking a calculated step backward as she watched Swan intently.
Swan's body twitched erratically, her head subtly shifting in multiple directions. Hope hadn't a clue what Swan was experiencing, but wouldn't dare interrupt either. And with baited breath, Hope continued to watch.
The scene in Swan's mind, however, was a lot more chaotic than the patient resolve her leader was displaying. Everything had begun to play out before her. The moment Gala collapsed and uttered what were supposed to be her final words - the moment Nona's rage claimed the sun's light in a bitter mourning. Swan saw the green spirals of anger that Nona had become, and soon pulled her nose away from the tree, gasping for air. Her blue eyes darted about the scene fearfully until she rested her eyes upon Hope. It was just a vision, she had to tell herself. Hope pressed her nose to Swan's shoulder, exhaling softly. "Breathe." Soon, Swan's pupils would slowly enlarge back to their original size.
She then took in a breath, her tense shoulders relaxing. Hope, seeing Swan recover, sighed in relief. After giving Swan another moment to regain her composure, Hope asked the one question clawing at her conscience; "What did you see?"
“Gala just collapsed. No attack - no visible illness, nothing. And when she said her last words, Nona's emotions went insane.” Swan began to explain, trying her best to remain confident in her prophetic skills.
"It was an immense anguish. Nona was so enraged she... turned into something beyond us." Swan began. "But... that feeling gives me some understanding. The start of a theory, anyway. My guess is that the Goddess of Corruption managed to poison Gala."
"Poison her? Without Gala or Nona knowing? Or even feeling it until moments before she apparently died? How?" Hope sounded more and more puzzled with each word Swan spoke. Eventually, something in Hope snapped. The once composed leader's brows furrowed, her teeth bared as she looked at the ground. "Dammit! How does our clan go from an all time peace to THIS?" Hope hissed, slamming her paw to the ground. "Do you know anything else?"
"As far as the poison, no. Nothing in particular. I am pretty confident it's something beyond our understanding; not able to be treated with herbs. Maybe something only magic could repel." Swan's eyes narrowed as she assessed the situation.
"That's why it took all of Nona's power to bring Gala back." Hope realized with a gasp, and Swan nodded - it was as though the cream molly had perfectly finished her thought by reaching into her racing mind.
"Precisely. That... leaves us in a really bad position. We are without a Goddess of Fate - the number of cats coming to our clan is going to dwindle. And when we are potentially on the cusp of a war from within. This is about as bad as it can get for us. What a horrifying reality." Swan grimaced. "I think our best chance is going to be learning as much as we can about Vira, and her relationship with the other two Goddesses."
"I agree. Have you seen anything else so far?" Hope asked hesitantly - the more she thought about it, the more it horrified her. A Goddess was so heartbroken that she turned from helping the clan she nurtured and bore to actively seeking its destruction. What happened to warrant such a strong and intense amount of retaliation? Especially towards cats who never even wronged her directly…
Then, something began to nag in the back of her head. It was a throbbing pain, one that Hope couldn't pinpoint a source of. She winced, and Swan took notice.
“Hope? Are you okay?” Swan asked, looking at Hope in concern. A moment passed, and Hope's eyes widened in terror as one phrase her mom had uttered echoed in her mind.
"Something began to ache in the back of my head. And then I passed out."
Hope couldn't fathom it. There was no way she was under the same effects that Gala was right before she died. She opened her mouth to speak of her fear, but something stopped her. Her intelligence. She knew that showing she was afraid would let this poison bury its fangs deeper into her. And with a shaky breath to regain her composure, Hope spoke.
"Swan... We need to turn around right now." Hope whispered as she slowly turned back towards the camp. Swan didn't question it - something in Hope's eyes told her something was amiss.
Hope's walking gradually slowed, until she collapsed at the clan's entrance. Swan looked at Hope desperately before realizing one thing.
When the vision of Gala's passing had played in her mind, she looked eerily similar to Hope. Of course, not just because she was Gala's daughter. Her movement gradually slowed, her wincing as something in her mind throbbed. Their pained expressions and concerned speech had played a part too. And with one final thought, Swan realized that Vira had grasped Hope too.
Her mind began to race. She thought of everything that she could. How could she put this beast at bay? What could she do to prevent Hope from dying? There weren't a lot of options. Then, a thought crossed her mind. As Swan dragged Hope into the camp, she looked about the scene before loudly shouting.
"LILY! RAIN! I NEED YOU BOTH!" Swan cried, her paw pressing against Hope's side and rattling her. "Stay awake for a little longer! You can do it!”
The two mollies, having been outside the medic's den as Nona was being treated, quickly ran out.
"What is it?!" Lily stammered, gasping at the sight of Hope. “What happened to her?!”
Rain had hurried over as well, looking at Hope in despair. "No way. First Nona and now Hope?." She took in a sharp breath; she had to maintain her cool. The last thing the Heart of Decay needed was a storm.
"Lily. I need you to open a portal right now. Open it to the mountains. The coldest part you know.”
Lily bowed her head, her paw swirling along the dirt beneath her. A blue light emitted from her paws for a brief moment before she rose it upward and forwards. A blue portal appeared before her, and without hesitation, the three mollies bounded into it one after the other. Swan had Hope in her maw by the scruff. Despite Hope being a larger cat, Swan's adrenaline and desperation to save her precious leader overcame her usual inability to accomplish such a feat.
When the three mollies emerged on the other side of the portal, Swan lowered Hope to the ground, ushering for Lily and Rain to follow her just a couple steps forward. It was hard to see the motion - a brutal blizzard kissed their fur coldly, obscuring their vision. However, one thing was certain - these mollies needed to save their leader.
"DIG." Swan ordered.
Swan sank her paws into the snow beneath her, and rapidly flung snow behind her; the start of what looked to be a burial site; just like the ones in the Heart’s graveyard. Lily and Rain followed, and by this point, Rain was struggling to maintain her composure. She was trembling, her eyes wide as the snow grew stronger.
The cold snow began to eat away at the mollies' paws. Soon, they were fighting both the cold and the aches forming in their entire body. Swan took notice that the pain was causing Rain to lose her composure, the snow around them growing stronger.
"Hold it in a little longer, Rain!" Swan urged, and Rain nodded, her lip curling inward as she held back a mournful scream. Soon, the hole was completed, and Swan darted back, grabbing Hope by the scruff and dragging her forward. She urgently placed the molly's body in the hole, and spoke softly.
"I promise we will find a way to save you." Swan backed up slowly, ushering Lily to do the same. "Rain, I need you to let it all out. I need you to fill that hole with water, and let it freeze over.”
“But that will kill Hope!” Rain replied, and Swan shook her head.
“No, it won't! You have to trust me… please.” Swan begged, looking at the blue and white molly helplessly. A moment passed between the two.
Rain saw the desperation in Swan's body language, and understood. She understood the urgency, and saw the desperation in Swan’s gaze. Swan then continued on with her speech. “This should buy us time to figure out how to stop this evil force." Swan said, her pelt pressing against Lily's to ensure their warmth and safety.
Rain was grateful for the approval of her unpredictable power, and soon, tears began to stream down her face. A small cloud above her head soon turned into a storm, pouring water into the hole at a rapid pace. Rain had learned to manipulate her power some - it would still only come out when experiencing intense emotion though. Once the hole was full, Rain pressed her paw against its surface, and with a sharp breath to calm her mind, the storm above her ceased. Soon, the water beneath her paw began to frost and freeze.
For a moment, beneath the icy cold surface, Hope's eyes opened. She looked up at Rain, but her expression was not one of fear. It was one of grace, of appreciation. She slowly closed her eyes, with one final thought before the frost consumed her.
"Thank you."
By this point, the snow had grown unbearable, with Lily and Swan quivering.
“Guys! W-we need to retreat, now!” Lily stammered, guiding the other two mollies into the portal, which was quickly closing. They made it through without a second to spare, appearing on the otherside. Each of them was drenched in snow, which quickly melted upon reentering the Heart.
Lily and Rain took a moment to each gather their breath before Lily moved towards Swan. A question lingered in her mind, one that she was afraid to ask. She didn’t want to bear more stress upon Swan, but knew it was necessary.
“Why did we have to do that so urgently?” Lily asked. “Does it… have something to do with Nona?”
“It does. I don’t want you to panic. I will explain everything as soon as I know more. In the meantime, please try to urge the others to stop crowding the medic’s den. I need to go talk with Cora.”
“Cora? Why her?” Rain asked, wiping a tear away from her eyes. She had managed to regain her composure quickly upon hearing Swan’s attempt at reassurance.
“She may be the only one who can figure out how to proceed. She is the one who found Nona and Gala, after all.” Swan said. “She has more knowledge here than I do. Thank you both for your help.” Swan forced a small smile; she wanted to keep the flames of hope ignited in both of her clanmate’s hearts, but it was admittedly a hard task.
—--
The chaos of the camp had finally calmed down after a few hours. Each of the cats gradually returned to their original duties of the day once it was confirmed Nona would make a full recovery. Of course, it wasn’t yet common knowledge that she had lost her Goddess powers entirely; but that was something the clan was not ready, nor needed, to know.
During this time, Swan had returned to the prophets' den, and sat. She didn’t know where Cora was. Cora was an enigma, always so kind and positive despite whatever trials laid ahead. Even when her leaders went missing, she held her head high and reassured the clan that everything would be alright. Her words were only confirmed when she revealed the existence of the Goddesses to the clan.
But, Cora was also spontaneous. She would go where the wind took her, confident it would always bring her back on track. Rather than search for Cora, Swan decided to play the waiting game. And so, she spent some time browsing her various scrolls.
She wasn’t sure what she was looking for. A prophecy she misinterpreted? A hint that could help them defeat Vira? Something in her felt as though the events of the day were her fault, even though the catastrophe had been brewing for a while by this point.
Swan looked at the wall of her den, peering at the dozens of rolled up scrolls. Each of these had scripture or drawings made by her, from dreams and visions she had experienced since joining the Heart of Decay. They were organized from oldest to newest, and one by one Swan was opening each scroll, and seeing if any information in it was relevant. Each time a scroll unveiled nothing new, she huffed, and watched as the scroll gently floated back to its slot on the shelf.
Then, paw steps began to thump behind her. Swan felt a weight lifted off her shoulders as she turned around, her nose twitching at the scent approaching her - it was Cora.
“Cora. It’s good to see you. Where have you been?” Swan inquired curiously with a subtle grin of curiousness, and Cora’s brow arched.
“I was just looking at the damage in the forest. I was trying to see if I could feel anything, maybe get a clue, and WOW, Nona did quite a number on it. Those poor trees. Oh well, they’ll grow again.” Cora said with an optimistic smile. “I just hope Nona is okay and makes a full recovery.”
Even in the most dire of situations, Cora somehow managed to approach it with grace and optimism - she truly believed things would get better. And most of the time, they did. But how the clan was meant to recover from something of this magnitude was beyond Swan - perhaps even beyond Cora. After a moment passed between the two, Swan began to speak.
“Do you know where to start?” Swan had hesitated to ask - she didn’t want to pressure Cora, but she didn’t have any other option.
“With what? Figuring out more about that Goddess of Corruption? Yeah, it would be best to ask the ex lovers themselves.” Cora replied before grimacing at the thought. “Though I don’t think it’s best to immediately ask. Gala barely escaped death, and Nona is in poor shape.”
“It doesn’t help that Hope is poisoned too.”
Cora’s green eyes widened at the revelation, her lower lip curling inward before she regained her composure.
“Hope is what?” Cora gasped. She had left the camp immediately to start her investigation - she hadn’t hung around to see Swan and Hope wander off together. “Were you with her? Were there any warning signs?”
“No. Though Hope seemed to know something was wrong. We were about to speak more about Vira when she told me to turn around. I… kind of panicked and did something risky.”
“Swan, gambling? Never.” Cora teased. “What did you do?”
“Hope is currently frozen in ice. I think with her Goddess heritage, she can manage it for a while.” Swan explained, and Cora nodded along.
“That was probably your best option. If it killed Gala with no warning, imagine what it would do to one of their weaker offspring.” Cora thought for a moment. “What was the idea behind that?”
“I just wanted to delay Hope’s death. I’m not sure what will happen once we unfreeze her.” Swan admitted, a twinge of guilt hidden within her voice. Cora, noticing it, stepped forward and pressed her nose to Swan’s forehead.
“You are being too hard on yourself. Breathe. We will work through this together. Even if it seems uhm… very hard right now.” Cora said reassuringly, though in all honesty, she wasn’t sure she trusted the words she uttered.
“You’re right. How can I help?”
“Hmm… it looks like you were already on the right path. Start looking at your scrolls, see if any of them mention Vira or corruption to any capacity. Things like… signs that someone shouldn’t be trusted. We have to consider every possibility that Vira may not be working alone.” Cora’s paws briefly trailed along the paper scrolls along the wall. She looked as though she was trying to feel for something, but really, she just felt like pawing at the scrolls, trying to force them to be helpful.
“What will you do in the meantime? Not letting me have all the glory, are you?” Swan teased.
“Oh stars, no. If we manage to save Hope and rid our clan of Vira, we can split the credit.” Cora retorted before sighing. “I am going to let Gala rest tonight, then I’m going to head to the pool. I want to see if they have any information on Vira, maybe if they can give some context as to why she is so mad at them, but taking it out on us.”
“Well, why Vira is taking it out on us is the easiest part. It’s the easiest way to hurt Gala and Nona; they’re a lot stronger than any of us.” Swan remarked, but Cora shook her head.
“That is ruled out with Gala dying. Vira could wipe us all out easily if she wanted to - why is she playing the slow game?”
“To punish or torture the Goddesses, maybe? But even then, she intended to kill Gala with whatever she hit her with. I don’t think she anticipated Nona sacrificing everything to bring her back.” Cora’s eyes narrowed as she lost herself in thought. “In any case, we need to figure out her potential goals, and her weaknesses, as fast as possible. Even if Hope is the product of two Goddesses, I don’t think even she can stay frozen forever, without it doing damage or killing her before Vira does.”
“Do you… think I made the wrong choice?” Swan asked, her paw trailing against the ground anxiously.
“With what? Freezing Hope to save her? No. I think it was actually our best - no, only option, and honestly, I’m surprised you thought of it so quickly.” Cora complimented the blue and white molly, which drew Swan’s attention. “For now, don’t beat yourself up. Get to work, and I’ll do my part as soon as Gala has had some time to rest.”
