By the time Rook sets eyes on the Backyard Bean, it's 7:05am; the shop is clearly bustling, although the atmosphere is quiet and polite so far- what a nice first impression. He pushes open the bean-shaped front door, and little bells go off. There are at least six fables in line, and he jumps right behind that last spot and starts reading off the menu to himself:

A look away from the menu.. to the dark, mysterious, gloomy, handsome,… Rook lets out a soft sigh, “Oh my.” Rook looks away immediately from the barista before being seen and feels heat rise in his face- thank goodness he is naturally pink-toned already.


*𝐶𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑘, 𝐶𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑘*

Everyone in the shop can hear the soft chime of jewelry, but Rook is entranced by its jingle and dainty movement. Two fables are the only thing between Rook and The Barista. Oh no, they were on one tab, and it's now Rook's turn.

What am I even ordering?? He keeps looking back between The Barista and the menu above nervously and just picks a random drink. This is a coffee shop and I like coffee, I’ll just choose one.. he think to himself. And reads off the Sweet Peony Latte Tea as a to-go order.

I just ordered- for crying out loud- a tea. Rook waits for The Barista to ring up his order, and there’s just a bit too much silence, so he starts looking for a name tag.. Of course, no name tag.

He grabs his tea, and it’s surprisingly a beautiful flavor, it makes him think of himself, floral and light. Rook heads to the door slowly, unsure of what to do, but quickly locates a stack of napkins on the way. As the fable with a little extra pink in his face exits through the bean shaped door, a napkin sits on a table with his number, his tea, and a small wish that maybe The Barista will find it.

Jess runs a well-known boutique in the city, rehabilitates rescued "doves", and is an informant to The Blackbird:

To my dearest dove,

I can't thank you enough for the fabric you sent with your last correspondence. Where in the world did you find these? The patterns on the red bolt are so intricate and lovely, but the gold silk is just divine! They've been all the rage at the boutique, especially with Beltane celebrations underway. Honestly, I'm not sure we'll have enough to get through all the orders! The girls and I couldn't be busier, I’m just so elated.

Oh, you would be ECSTATIC to learn that a family from one of the noble houses came through this past week... Yes, the one you're thinking of – I can already see your eyes rolling. The lord is nice enough, he never really gives me any trouble, but the lady!! She’s so entitled. I can't stand her, or her awfully loud children, running amuck in and out of the salon…

I suppose I should be grateful for their coin, though, since it allowed me to send this package to you!! I do hope the tarts travel well; there's three different kinds! Do tell me what you think of them all. Mari helped me, of course. Everyone pokes fun at her for being so klutzy in the shop, but you should see her in the kitchen!! She’s simply amazing.

Well, I do apologize for the shorter note, I just don't have much more time to keep writing – I've got so many orders piling up, thanks to you! I so look forward to when we next meet. 💋

There's also three ribbons, in varying shades of grey, a silver chain with an ivory and pink feather attached - one of hers - and a small bottle of liquid; perhaps his favorite drink of choice.}

Syrak is an infamous information broker referred to as The Blackbird. He runs an underground merchant guild called the Doves, and rescues people during his travels.

Precious, Butterfly,

I am pleased the bolts of fabric were to your taste. I will send more with this letter and in a few more colours. If you require any help, try singing to the doves nesting on your stoop; the sweet melody will surely bring them to your aid like in the fairytales of old.

You and Mari did a wonderful job on the tarts as usual, the bacon one was my favourite from this batch. If you lack anything in the kitchen let me know. I will get you all you need.

I will be sending you a fledgling soon, the poor thing was neglected by her previous owner. I’ve done what I could to clean it up but this bird is truly feral. I believe she requires a woman’s touch and comfort, perhaps a taste of gentleness for once as well. My birdmaster will be bringing her to you, he will help to ensure her wings remain clipped until she is not a flight risk. I’d hate to see her back in the wilds where she doesn’t belong.

For your trouble in rescuing this bird I’ve included the sewing pattern created by that famous seamstress you always go on about. This particular pattern is for a gown she was creating for the late empress just before her passing. The dress never made it to the public eye and I think you will quite like it.

P.S. If you make me something to match I’ll make sure I’m back in time for the festival.

(His letter is a bit smudged and obvious he was writing it in a moving carriage. When opened the usual illusory butterflies spring from the paper. The package includes the sewing pattern, diamond encrusted butterfly hairpins, new bolts of fabric, and a music box that plays musical rendition of a common bird melody. Also some odd shimmering spice just labelled ‘for tarts’.)

Amorette could feel it. It was like a second shadow following her everywhere she went. Weakness settled in her bones, leaving her exhausted despite how much she needed to get done. She had to push through this.

She met her shadow shortly after this. A reaper. It wasn't fair, but what could she do? At least he was being generous, giving her time to have one last friendship before it was time to finally reap her soul.

Over time, Amorette fell for the reaper. It had been a long time, longer than she'd expected the reaper to give her, but she'd cherish this experience and the feelings blossoming in her chest.

Amorette questioned the reaper, finally gathering the courage to ask for his name. After all, how could she go without knowing the name of her last friend and first crush? "Endymion" he replied, and how fitting it was for such a gentle reaping fable.

At long last, she had reached her end. Or so she thought. Her reaper, so princely and kind, bestowed upon her a locket, enchanted to keep her soul, body, and mind intact and alive for as long as he remains a reaper.
