Prompt: Short story on how she met her toadstool friend:
Perseph awoke to a loud buzzing. A bee hovered over the flower by her ear. It was irritating - the noise, and when the bee landed it felt as if a bug was crawling on her (it was). She batted it away rather aggressively yet the bee seemed to want to stick around. Realizing that her nap was over, Perseph got up and took after the bee playfully. She chased it mercilessly through the forest for a good while, only stopping when she realized how thirsty she was.
Her ears perked up. Every sound in the lively woods started to hum. Through the noise of the birds, winds, animals and insects, she caught the song of a small bubbling creek.
Perseph overshot and nearly plunged head first into the water. After laughing at herself, she regained her composure and proceeded to lap up the water. Her whole body relaxed as the cold water went down her throat. All was good. The forest was serene and the water fresh.
Then, a petal fell before her eyes into the water and was whisked away. Perseph's head shot up in shock as she watched the petal dance down the stream.
"Was- was that my petal?"
She peered over the water at her muddled reflection. She couldn't tell. She sat back on her haunches and lifted her forepaw up to her head to the flowers grown by her ear and began to count.
"1-2-3-4-5-6-7 -" Gone! Not just one but TWO of her petals were gone. Perseph was young and had never wilted before. It was akin a coat shedding, so entirely natural and painless but none the less distressing for her. She walked with care slowly over to a near tree and hid beneath it's roots. She was terribly afraid. What would it mean to loose her flowers?
She then heard a faint whisper of a fungi. Toadstools and alike had silly sounding voices in Perseph's opinion, so it put a smile on her face. The toadstool reminded her of the seasons, how in fall flowers wilt, in winter they hide, in spring they bud and bloom again, and summer they play. Perseph felt her mood brighten. Shaking her head, a petal fell off and floated softly to the forest floor. She gently picked it up and handed it to her toadstool friend, who took it graciously.
Since then the two have been close friends and seldom separate.
