surfaces - good day

A warm breeze ruffled Callisto's fur and ruffled the vibrant green grass. Everywhere zhe looked, everything looked more alive than anything zhe'd ever seen before. It was nothing like the city back home: blinding white wizard towers spiralling into the sky, neon billboards covering every available surface, a constant hustle and bustle of constant noise, and a sense of overwhelm that never really left.

Callisto hadn't thrived there. That's why zher parents had called up an old family friend, one Mrs. May, and asked if zhe could stay at her farm for the summer. She, a grandmother now, had welcomed zher in with open arms.

But everything was new and strange. How could a farm like this, a thing with dirt and crops and animals, be real? It felt like a storybook come to life. The relative quiet was almost overwhelming.

It wasn't until afternoon that Callisto found the duck pond. Though smaller than the pools back home, it almost seemed busier what with the constant quacking and splashing and flapping of ducks.

Most importantly, there were ducklings. Ducklings who were just as curious about Callisto as zhe was about them. They made eye contact. One duckling climbed out to examine. Then another. Then the ducklings were running around, climbing up and over.

When Mrs. May came to find Callisto for dinner, she found the ducklings snuggled up against zher as cozy as can be. Perhaps this farm thing would be better than zhe thought.

If you looked at them now it might be hard to believe, but for most of Callisto's life she was deathly afraid of water. Instead of joining her friends in the pool and having a rollicking good time, she'd rather curl up on a sunbathing chair in the furthest corner. Any time someone splashed her, she'd cry.

It was the ducklings who helped her change her mind. In the early days of summer, she'd sit by the pond and quake every time a duck dove beneath the shallow waves. How could they stand it?

But then her ducklings kept swimming and she started to wonder... was it really that bad? Callisto could take a shower okay, being damp after that was annoying but didn't kill her.

After some days of this, she timidly asked Mrs. May to help her learn to swim. It was slow going - even choosing to get her paws wet left her shaking and trembling. But step by step she found herself getting more and more comfortable with it until she could dunk her head beneath the surface and walk along the bottom just fine.

By the end of summer, Callisto was swimming around the pond with her darling ducklings like she hadn't a care in the world. Though her anxiety remained, she found herself able to sit with it and enjoy the water just like a duckling. Perhaps she'd finally be able to enjoy the pool when she got home.

Life on a farm was hard work, that much was for certain. Callisto didn't take to it as easily as they would have perhaps liked, even with all the good it seemed to do.

There was a lot to miss back home: how easy it was to acquire things they wanted, how close the library was, and especially how much people watching they could do. Especially when it came to how they dress; do you know how much you can tell about a person by what they put on their body?

Most of the people on the farm... simply didn't, instead preferring their natural fur or protective coverings instead. Boring! Sure, Callisto could look at flowers and sketch out their own designs, but without inspiration that got really dull really fast.

One day, Mrs. May surprised them with a stack of vintage fashion magazines. Turns out she used to collect them for her daughter, who these days was a big fancy editor of a new magazine somewhere big and far away. Now these magazines belonged to Callisto.

Where better to read their magazines than by the duck pond? The ducklings were less interested in the content than in climbing all over them or snuggling them, but that was just fine. They're ducks! All they had to do was exist to ensure Callisto had a truly wonderful afternoon.

The Great Conjunction by Sleeping At Last

The deep expanses of space, full of both the darkest and brightest corners of the universe. Many would say the ability to explore the vast depth of this amazing world is amazing and a dream...but it is sooooo boring. Yeah I guess the stars can be pretty and those other weird swirlie things that pop up sometimes (I'm not a space expert don't expect me to know space terms), but it is just a lot of sitting. Like you go around and help with some stuff on the spaceship and then you sit and wait some more. Honestly I dream of the day we can figure out teleportation because space travel is like a car road trip with your family on steroids.
However, like being stranded on a boat in the ocean, there is one sight that always brings me joy. LAND!

Finding a new planet, and especially one we can actually land on is fantastic. Half the time we fly past a promising looking planet and look down and "oh yay another all gas one, moving on". So upon finding a real planet I get super excited! For one we finally get to leave the spaceship and stretch our legs, but secondly I can hopefully fulfill my goal on every new planet...

The Snack that Smiles Back by Shawn Wasabi

If there is one thing that I love more than anything in the universe...it is trying new food. The excitement of landing on a new planet and getting to explore their culinary cuisine is amazing. Some planets have completely different flavors I have never even dreamed of! Usually we start with exploring the land for new native plants and try them out. Often after we experiment with new recipes using them or try and find out how the locals use the ingredients.
You've never know true joy until you have stumbled across a bizarre looking fruit and get to take that first juicy and delicious bite into it. The brand new flavors dancing across your tongue in unexplainable. I have had fruit that tingles in your mouth and veggies that taste like they have been grilled straight out of the ground. Some new planets even have unique cooking styles, like using moonlight to infuse flavors or spinning stuff really fast to stretch out the food! Truly nothing in the universe quite makes me smile like getting to experience newness in flavor.

While I hate traveling with a burning passion, it is a sacrifice I'm willing to make in order to experience novel flavors. I hope one day, maybe when I'm older, I can become the universe's first food reviewer. I'd have enough money to buy a much faster spaceship and get to travel the universe trying exotic dishes from the finest culinary establishments imaginable. Now, I'm not entirely sure yet how this would work out, but I guess maybe trying to log my current food experiences is a way to start.

waffle02 - I really enjoyed that the writing was from the character's perspective, and that the tone reflected that! I'm also a fan of both the musicians you chose songs from, so I greatly enjoyed those hehe. And your art pieces are so expressive! The character's feelings were so clearly felt in your form, I loved it.

SkyWishes21 - I loved the textures of your art pieces, and how tangibly fluffy the character's tail and chest fluff are in them! I really liked how the hair style also changes in each picture-- the styles themselves are very cool, and I liked that it showed how the character gets joy from fashion as well as the ducklings! And the duckies that make them happiest being the motivator to grow and be brave just melted my heart.

Like I said, the duckies bringing Callisto the initial joy, and then being what motivates zher to be brave really made me fall for this form. I also really liked that Callisto's love of fashion is explored; how she gets to enjoy fashion whilst on the farm, how it looks different than in the city-- and that she shares it with the ducklings, despite them not really engaging because they are, in fact, ducks 😂🥹
