THE HAWTHORNS.
level 3 (330/400) last post last response prey/predator list death: yes

Bearleaf hated this. He hated the thrumming of his heart against his ribcage, so quick that it was painful. He wished to be snug in his nest, curled into a tight ball, warm and content with not a worry in the world other than catching the mouse he just couldn't seem to reach in his dreams. There was a longing, a sense of nostalgia, for a time where he hadn't experience this. For a time where he hadn't met the bear, hadn't gotten killed, hadn't lived again afterwards. He wished none of this had happened.

Wake up, wake up, wake up. It was a mantra, a prayer. Let this be a dream. A nightmare spurred on by too full of a belly to subconsciously dream of a mouse, of the sound of his own name. What an irony it was, being slain by something that shared your name, something you had been named after because you looked so similar. Why couldn't he have been named after something gentle, compassionate? A mouse or a river or a dream. Something that didn't have the chance to threaten his life and, in the end, take it.

Bearleaf was lucky, he knew that. He had lived such a good life, he would've been lucky to die without any of the horrible circumstances some of his tribemates had gone through. Scorchfur's mistreatment at the paws of upwalkers, Walnutwhisker's loss of family after a plague and famine took his former Clanmates. He hadn't ever known loss, other than the things he had never seen. It made him feel almost unlucky to live again, even if it was a blessing in the eyes of some cats.

Wake up, wake up, wake up, he repeated. But this was not a dream.

Deep in the redwoods, hidden in the looming trees and stalking behind their thick trunks, was a bear. A large mama bear, willing to maim and maul anything that threatened her precious offspring. He'd do the same, if he had children. Kill for them. For a moment, he pondered about the instinct. Was it selfish, to want to protect something that was just a figment of yourself? She had created that child, had nurtured it to grow up, to live just like her. Did she want to save her child because of the love she held for it, or just because she had spent too much time making sure it stayed alive for it to meet a fate as vicious as an early death?

In a way, he felt pity for the creature. She hadn't killed maliciously. She had killed the same way a mother would, the same way any warrior would fight for a queen and her litter. Just because she hadn't been able to speak their language, communicate effectively, or just because she had killed without thinking, that didn't make it her fault. It didn't make her an enemy. At the end of the day, they were all fighting just to ensure survival, to ensure that their loved ones lived and thrived.

He hated the guilt he felt when the cats around him wished for death upon the creature and her child. He was a warrior, he couldn't spend time feeling sad that the beast that had taken his life might lose hers someday. At the end of the day, he needed the same thing she did. To survive and thrive. To be able to live long enough to have spawn of his own, to be able to fight for them the same way she had. Hopefully, never kill for them. Although he would. Without hesitation.

It was all too much. It brought an energy to his paws, an adrenaline that shot through his veins and numbed the pain that throbbed on his pelt, his paws, his neck. He leaned on his comrades as they pushed their shoulders into him, waddling and hobbling as he pushed forward. There was still a lingering fear, that the bear would come back, that it would finish (again) what it had already started. But there was hope behind that. Hope that he hadn't been able to live again just to see it taken away so soon.

Bearleaf had to live. He had to have the chance to fight for survival. To thrive.

tl;dr bearleaf grapples with the struggles of getting maimed by a bear and hopes that it's gone. :P

Overlook Station
Last Explore Post| Last Response Received | First Free Post

The first thing Skyfire did after declaring this abandoned train station home was build a nest. It was a mediocre bare bones one, just a few feathers on a high-up counter settled in to a back corner. She'd have to find some moss, of course. Maybe some vines if she were lucky? It wouldn't hurt to weave some structure into her nest.

The second thing she did was build a nest for her cardinal, Poppy. This was much easier; all she had to do was weave some sticks together into a basic shape and he'd do the rest on his own time. This was just to give him a place to sleep while she was out exploring.

As for the third thing, she padded out the broken door and sat at the edge of the tracks. Mountain wind breezed through her fur as she gazed off into the distance. There would be no trains coming up this way; the tracks had been long abandoned according to the railway cat who'd directed her here. The only engine, a massive, dirt-caked behemoth, was parked to the side in its own state of disrepair. Someone had forgotten about it, evidently. All the better for her!

Skyfire's belly rumbled, reminding her that she really rather needed to eat. Great. She flipped open her satchel and took a look at the contents. The only food leftover from her journey through a human village a few days back was a piece of cheese and a few pieces of dry chicken. She slowly chewed through a single chunk of chicken and resolved to hunt on today's expedition.

Luckily, she wasn't going to get lost today. So long as she followed the tracks, she'd be able to make her way back home even if she stopped to catch a mouse or two along the way.
So, with some food in her belly and a plan in mind, Skyfire took a deep breath and her first step down the line.

Winter made the world quieter; even the crunch of snow beneath her paws was nothing to the crackle of autumn leaves. Birds didn't sing so much as they had in months past. All was still and Skyfire liked it that way. Why shouldn't she enjoy the solitude?

Alas, as of yet she had not seen nor scented a mouse. There was every possibility she'd have to ration her leftovers if hunting continued this poorly.

Still, she trekked on down the rails. On and on and on she went, blessedly alone.

The first oddity she stumbled across was a crudely built statue of a cat that was seemingly built by feline paws. Humans had a particular steadiness for detail that even the best artisan cat she'd met had failed to meet. This statue reminded her of those an old frenemy had made - rough and unpolished, but clear enough in what it was supposed to be.

In front of the statue was a bowl made of bark, equally crude. Another rectangular piece of bark sits in front of it, carved with the words 'CHEZ PLZ."

Ah. A place to put cheese. While there might not be much prey to find and she hated to give up food, Skyfire couldn't help but be intrigued. What would happen if she left her cheese in the bowl?

It took a couple minutes for her to fumble around in her satchel, but soon enough she had extracted her cheese and set it down on the bowl. And... go! Do something! Anything? Please?

Huh. Nothing happened. That was... odd. Maybe if she turned around and walked away? If nothing happened then, she'd come back for the valuable meal. Still, it never hurt to try! She closed her eyes and turned tail, counting her steps as she went.

At step twenty, she heard a rustle in the leaves. Quick as a flash, she whipped around to see a flash of silver fur disappear into the
brush.

"Wait!" Skyfire cried. "Who are you?"

No answer. As she was loath to leave the tracks the mystery cat would have to wait. Perhaps another time.

It wasn't long down the tracks until she encountered an actual living soul. Skyfire paused, studying the cat intently. They were mostly white, pointed with orange and brown. They were definitely not silver and coming from the opposite direction of where that flash was gone. Still, never hurt to be friendly.

"Heya!" she said, waving her tail in greeting. "Name's Skyfire. There's a statue a ways back asking for cheese; know anything about it?"

"Doodlebug," the cat, apparently named Doodlebug, responded cheerfully enough. "That must be my friend Wahoo's statue! I was teaching him how to sculpt a while ago and he said his masterpiece was this a way."

She frowned, contemplating heavily. "Is Wahoo silver?"

Doodlebug raised an eyebrow. "Yes, actually. Did you see him?"

"Just a tail. He took my cheese from the bowl while I wasn't looking."

"Ha! That tom sure loves his cheese." Doodlebug gave her an amused shake of the head. "I'll go check it out for ya, all right?"
"S-sure, thanks."

Skyfire watched as they padded down the way she just came. Maybe she'll wait here for a bit, just to see. And... hm, maybe she should get hunting. This chicken wasn't going to last forever, and she could feel her stomach growling again. Nose to the wind, she started sniffing.

[509 words]

The smell of unfamiliarity lingered in the air. It was a curious scent, and with a wary eye, one overlooked the rogues at the Heart of Decay's border. They are cats, like ourselves, exploring the journey that is life, after all - the soul thought. And so, it was decided - they left behind the eyes that pryed. [Nona and Gala have chosen to ignore the rogues].

With a quiet sigh, the two figures of seemingly mythical origin pressed on. The two seemed to yearn for something - to understand, to feel. And so, they had descended to the mortal realm together, to see what the day to day livings were like.

"Nona?" The black molly cooed curiously. "There seems to be something on your mind."

"Nothing, my darkest gem. I am just fascinated by the small things these cats take comfort in." Nona, with ease, leaped atop a tree, gazing down below. Her green eyes locked upon a feline, whose paws were covered in purple substance, seemingly slapping away at a surface - creativity, Nona thought.

"How these mortals can find the enjoyment in even the little things. I too wish I had interests such as that cat there." Nona said, pointing towards the feline with a tilt of her head.

"You may do whatever you wish. What is stopping you?" Gala inquired.

"I feel that I am tied to the course of time. Every second for them is precious. But for me, it is endless. What they consider their lifetimes work, I consider a menial task done in just a few moments. I will never learn to appreciate the time I have, for I have so much of it."

"Think of it this way. You get to lead cats to the Heart of Decay, and spend eternity with me." Gala said with a small, reassuring smile. "And while I do not favor any of the cats in the clan particularly, you are forever my favorite."

"Thanks, Gala." Nona replied with a small smile. Her ears then perked curiously as another cat began to wander, but this one was sniffing about - seemingly searching for something that would never come to fruition.

"That cat needs something. Perhaps you can grant it?"

A sigh left Nona, and then, a small blue cord emitted around her, cataloguing through items that Nona had amassed over her long life time. Soon, one item would prevail - a block of cheese.

"This... is what it says the cat wants." Nona sniffed the cheese warily before carefully tossing it in the feline's direction. Though the feline would not be able to see her, at least not right now, Nona could see their reaction.

"WAHOO!!!!" The cat yelled in excitement, grasping the cheese in it's maw before skedaddling off to fish elsewhere.

"See? What you think is a small task, they find enjoyment in. You are far too hard on yourself, my love." Gala said before moving forward. "How do these cats do these patrols everyday, by the way? They're far too boring."

"Any moment with you is far from that."

[ 1323 words ]

The atmosphere was full of budding love and affection. The flowers were blooming, dotting the usually dreary scenery with colors and light. Newborn fauna were being born, taking their innocent first steps in life. A light drizzle rained down on the marshy lands, dampening the pelts of the Glow-Faes and Forgotten alike.

A gray tabby cat led the way. A scowl was riddled on the feline’s face, annoyed by the chattering of their happy den mates. They woke him up just to chat with them? Stopping to rub the sleep out of his eyes, their ears pricked up at the sound of purrs. The others were meandering their way behind Buttonbush, not minding the bossy cat’s attitude.

On the way, Chimes broke off into a run. With a squeal, he cannoned into a furry beast, startling the other cats. A noticeable yowl rang across the clear. With a dreadful jolt, Sir Buttonbush was the first on the scene. With a growl, he softly shoved a confused Chimes onto the ground.

“What in the world was that for?!” Chimes squealed. Dot and Pookie nudged the startled tom onto his paws. “Yeah, Bushy, what’s your deal?” Dot scowled at the annoyed cat.

Rolling their eyes, Sir Buttonbush pointed his paw at the now amused cat. “Hello? Chimes here just attacked one of our friend! I can't be the only one who sees this?” The cat was helped up by Chimes as he repeatedly mewed “sorry”. Turns out the said ally was no other than Marietta xerself!

Marietta purred. “It’s fine, dear Sir Buttonbush. I’m sure Chimes meant no harm. He hasn't seen me in a while, so he must’ve been excited to see me!” Chimes shuffled his paws nervously. “Definitely that. I’m so, SO sorry Marietta.”

Pookie turned to Sir Buttonbush. “See? He’s sorry, can you forgive him now?” Sir Buttonbush widen their eyes at Pookie in shock. Had his judgment been corrected by faer again? This is the third time this week! With a frown, he lowered his head in embarrassment. “I guess so. Carry on then.

It took a while for the four to get moving as Marietta settled to share its travel stories. Xe captured Chimes and Pookie with her story of xer witnessing a dog walking another dog! This got a pretty good kick out of them, even Sit Buttonbush let out a tiny chuckle. After some good stories and jokes were exchanged, Marietta took her leave, not before giving a final pat on Chimes head.

“Goodbye!” Marietta yowled. “I’d love to see you guys again soon!”

---

Pookie chirped faer goodbyes to name as fae and Dot continued traveling. An agitated call came from Buttonbush as he were about to lose sight of the two. Blushing under faer pelt, Pookie grabs Dot by the scuff and rushed up to Buttonbush wheezing.

“Okay! I’m r-ready to go Button!” Pookie struggled to stand tall as fae gasped for breath. “Whooof… I think I did too much.” Fae collapsed onto the marshy floor, taking a brief rest.

“Well, get pumping, I want to return some as soon as possible” Sir Buttonbush slightly softens their gaze at faer as he continues to grumble. Did he… was Buttonbush about to smile at faer? That’s a change, for sure.

While the lagging trip followed behind them, Pookie felt a poke at faer side. Turning, fae locked eyes with a sly-looking Dot. Oh no, not again Dot…

Sticking out her tongue, Dot trotted into a teasing skip. “Ooh, somebody has a crush! Pookie likes Buttonbush! Cmon, confess to him already- “ Pookie slapped a paw over Dot’s mouth. “Shut you yap, Dotty!” fae hissed. “I don’t want them to know yet! I still need time to bond with the cat y’know. “ Pookie felt faer pelt heat up under faer pelt. Dot toned down her just a teeny bit.

Pookie’s eyes glimmered as fae looked upon faer crush once again. A wistful sigh escaped for her muzzle. Seeing Pookie so stuck just begged for her to do something. She saw Pookie “bond” with Sir Buttonbush from afar. Fae’ll just melt as Sir Buttonbush brushes by, gushing about his serious gaze and his flower adorned pelt. But as fae tries to speak with them, fae freezes up. To be fair, Sir Button is the most patient with Pookie out of anyone else on the farmyard, so it’s shocking that fae’s so reluctant.

Wait a tick. Pookie likes Sir Buttonbush. Buttonbush likes flowers, especially some seeds for their sibling. By my spotted pelt, I’ve got it!

Dot darted forward and whispered in Pookie’s ear. “I got an idea, Pookie! How bout this, once Bushy orders us to split up, me and Chimes will team up and find Sir Buttonbush’s favorite flower! Genius, am I right?” Before Pookie could stammer out an answer, Chimes yowl sounded behind them.

“Did someone say my name??” Chimes shouted behind them. Dot beckoned Chimes over with her tail. Chimes skipped over to her, swishing his tail impatiently. “Well, what is it then?”

Dot recapped her plan whilst they padded on, Pookie worriedly looked ahead. I can’t believe I’m allowing Dot to do this… this grand scheme of hers. Will this even work? Once the two cats flanked Pookie once again prodded at Dot.

“Do you think this’ll work guys? For once I’m not so confident about this” Chime and Dot perked up. “Of course it’ll work! Just sit back and relax, we’ll help you get moving!” Chimes trilled.

Pookie gulped. “And if you guys don’t find flowers? Then what?”

Dot rested her tail on faer back. “Don’t you worry about a thing! Well just find something else. I’m sure he’ll appreciate it if it’s from you.” Pookie just gaped at her. I hope she's right, otherwise I'll box her ears for this...

---

The sun was coming to a set once the team of four made it to their destination. A cool breeze ruffled their pelts as they awaited instructions. Turning to the gathered cats, Sir Buttonbush puffed themselves up and started his announcement.

Alright, we wasted way too much time, so we have little time to search for resources, thanks to a certain someone”, Sir Buttonbush paused to glare at a mischievous looking Chimes. With an exaggerated sigh, he continued. “With this little bit of time we have, it’s best that we split into twos.”

Pookie straightened forward in anticipation. Glancing at faer in the corner of her eye, she just had to snicker a bit. Great stars above, fae’s head over paws for this cat! Pookie seemed to hear her teasing laughter and stepped on her paw, satisfied at her fake yelp.

Sir Buttonbush was still caught in his own thoughts, while the two cats quietly bickered. With them playing around for who knows how long, Buttonbush swung around, puffing at the three felines amongst him. “Alright, listen up! Dot and Chimes will go together while Pookie and I team up. Good? Good. HEAD OUT!”

As Buttonbush started to pad away, Pookie ran over the two others. “Good luck guys.” fae mewed.”And…thanks Dot.” With a wink from Dot, the two set off.

Dot put her nose to the ground, searching for something to bring to Pookie. Dot and Chimes took what seemed to be forever before Chimes called her over. With a skip in her heart, she raced over to Chimes, looking to see what he'd found. It was yellow and crumpled up. Like a flower! Wait, it's not a flower, it’s a piece of cheese… Turns out what Dot thought was a flower was a fake. Guess they have to give that to someone else…

In the end, the two found a sweet looking ribbon to give to Pookie. It’s not like faer show to gift to Sir Buttonbush now, but fae’ll keep it in mind when they return home. For now, Dot’s just happy she made her friend’s day, against her will.

The railway seemed to be barren. Despite the two cats she had seen, there seemed to be an absence of any prey, all mouth-watering scents stale and carried away with the wind. She even diverted from the tracks for just a moment to search a bit farther, to no avail. Everything seemed to be gone, trying to escape the chill winter brought along.

Shaking her head, Skyfire decided that this didn't have to be a fruitless expedition. She needed moss and other cushiony items for her nest, or anything soft for Poppy to steal for his own, and those seemed to grow everywhere. Making quick work as the sun grew lower in the sky, she clawed off the plants growing along the side of trees and the railway cards alike, shoving them into her satchel to carry home.

After her satchel was filled to the brim, the she-cat felt more confident. The prey would come out tomorrow and her reinforced nest would provide her with more comfort, giving her more energy to adventure and hunt. There was always a silver lining.

Just as she turned to head back home, the sound of the grass rustling sent a wave of worry over her, eyes widening as she looked for the source. Her gaze landed on another unfamiliar cat, different than the two she had already met. Maybe that's why there wasn't enough prey...

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to startle you." The cat responded at the sight of Skyfire's confusion, their ears pulling back sheepishly. "I'm Fennel. I was just passing through to try to find something to heal my friend, but I can't seem to find anything. I was wondering if you had anything to help, like an herb or a warm meal? I'll give something in return, I promise."

As they meandered on, Nona kept her nose turned up into the air, making certain that the unfamiliar scent didn't carry across their border. While prying eyes onto the territory were never an issue, paws on her soil made it into one. There were scent markers for a reason - to never stray past. Luckily, it seemed like their curiosity had been ebbed away by their glances, never reaching a point where she had to worry about it.
[ The rogues have gone! ]

Ruminating the words of her lover, she tried her best to find the joy in all of it. As she chased after a particularly quick mouse through the brush and shrubbery, she noted the rush of the wind through her fur, the coolness it splashed along her skin. The clean and efficient kill brought a rush of pride over her, as it usually did.

Before they were to turn back around and head back, the couple decided to lounge in a particularly cozy patch of grass and plants. Curling into each other, Gala found joy in threading the fragrant leaves into Nona's fur while the she-cat drew her tongue over her shoulders and head, smoothing down the pieces that got ruffled with the wind.

“There’s an intruding cat on our lands,” Airám informed, approaching his mencey.

Tanausú looked at him, raising an eyebrow. “And what do they want? They won’t be hostile, will They?”

“I… didn’t think I’d ask him… honestly…”

The mencey shook his head with a chuckle, “Let’s go meet this intruder…”

Airám led him to where he’d seen the cat, but he met him halfway. The cat was actually heading briskly toward its den.

“These lands belong to EcheideClan,” Tanausú announced, standing in front of the strange intruder. A fawn-colored cat with white markings, like a diamond on its forehead, green eyes, very furry, and carrying a mailbag.

“Oh! Thank goodness! I thought I was lost. This is the first time I’ve brought a package to this clan, and it’s quite confusing terrain… I assume you’re the leader.”

“The mencey,” Tanausú corrected. “But yes, it’s me.”

“Perfect! I’m a messenger, and a kittypet from the next town asked me to bring you a gift. He says he read it was a common offering to the gods and thought it could be useful for your altar. A curious cat, very friendly, yes sir, very friendly.” Tanausú and Airán looked at each other in confusion as the strange foreign cat took something out of his bag. “I wrapped it in this cloth so it wouldn’t leave my bag smelling like that for a month…” And finally, he took out and unwrapped the thing. It was a cheese.

“For the offering? I’ll have to thank him when I see him again. I’m sure the goddess will love it…” Tanausú commented, sniffing the large cheese. “Thank you very much for bringing it… erm…?”

“Cliff, my name is Cliff. And it’s been a great pleasure. That’s why I became a postman.”

The cats said goodbye to the strange traveler in a somewhat more animated and relaxed manner than when they arrived. They actually found him a little odd, but even odder was the cat who had sent them the cheese.

"Come on, we have to take the cheese to the offering!"

And both cats returned to the jameos, the tunnel where the clan lived.

The altar with the offerings already had several prey skulls, a goat horn, some prickly pear fruits, and Magec was, at that very moment, placing some herbs he thought the mother goddess might appreciate.

"Qué es eso?" Magec asked, looking at the cheese his leader was carrying.

"Eso es queso," Airám replied with a smile and sing-song tone.

Tanausú placed the cheese next to the goat horn and finally, with his mouth free, explained, "They gave it to us for the offerings. It's goat cheese, so I'm sure Chaxiraxi would love it."

Magec moved the cheese a bit so it would be better placed, more aligned, and continued adding herbs and flowers to make the offerings look better. They'd had good luck with fishing and hunting lately and decided to thank the mother goddess with some offerings, but it had gotten a little out of hand.

"Do the gods like cheese?" Jonay asked, approaching and looking at the altar intensely.

The mencey shrugged. "That's what the kittypet who sent it said. He said he read it. We have nothing to lose by trying..."

"Anyway, the cheese is not ours," Airám added, and noticing the intense stares, his fur bristled. "It was a joke! Please, it was just a joke!!! You never understand my jokes."

Tanausú shook his head, watching Airán walk away to escort Magec back to the tunnels.

“My mencey…” Jonay spoke, following Tanausú.

“What do you want?” Tanausú asked with a crooked smile and an arched eyebrow. He knew they only called him that when they wanted something or had messed up in some way and it was his turn to fix it.

“Well… I just wanted a small piece of the cheese.”

Tanausú didn't believe what he was hearing. Jonay wasn't a sweet tooth and respected the gods greatly. Why did he want a piece of the offering?

Jonay must have seen the confusion on his mencey's face and rushed to explain his reasons, which only made his leader's confused face turn into a grimace of surprise and some horror.

"I have my own altar at the foot of the volcano... for Guayota..." Tanausú's heart raced. Guayota was evil. He had never heard of a cat making an offering to him, not one, not for a moment. It was madness to any cat's mind, but Jonay had a good reason. "It's for Gara, she... She's a creature of Guayota and... and I thought that... I don't know... if he blessed me with Gara... he also deserves an offering from time to time, right?"

With a snort, Tanausú shook his head. He was about to refuse his Achimencey's request, but... he finally sighed, turned to face the altar, and took a small piece of cheese. Jonay could hardly believe it as he received the offering. Tanausú placed it at his feet. “Don’t make me regret it,” he said, as he always did when Jonay got his way. “And take an escort.”

“I always go with Gara.”

“Cat escort. From now on, whenever you want to approach the volcano, you will take another cat as an escort, for safety. Okay?”

Jonay sighed, somewhat annoyed. “Of course, my mencey,” he said, and took the piece of cheese.

“I’ll send Airám to accompany you.”

Jonay left to find Gara and Tanausú went to find the warrior. He entered the tunnels, expecting to see him lounging around some corner. What he didn’t expect was to find him in the medicine den rubbing noses with Magec. “By the gods…” He sighed; today was a day of surprises and discoveries. “Airám, I need you to accompany Jonay to the volcano. Magec should accompany you too. It will be good for them to look for herbs.”

“To the volcano, you mean? To that terrifying mountain of lapilli, inhabited by the great demon? What is Jonay looking for in there?” Airám asked, surprised and confused. It is customary, almost law, to avoid the volcano; it is forbidden land, and one must not step on the volcanic cone.

“Jonay has… He has an altar of offerings there,” the mencey explained.

“Offerings to Guayota!!?” Airán didn't believe it, and even less did he believe that Tanausú would approve.

“And you want me to go near that altar?” Magec asked. “Don't you remember the myth? My name is the same as the god Guayota tried to kidnap. What if he takes ME for the offering?”

“Nothing of the sort will happen!!! You won't step on the volcano, you'll just get closer, and it's safer for everyone to go together. And Gara will go too, so she'll protect you from the evil god, okay? Now don't waste any more time, both of you, walking! If you won't do it for your achimencey, do it for Gara.”

Finally, they sighed, huffed, grumbled, and accepted the task, leaving the cave and meeting up with Jonay and Gara outside, ready to begin the long march to the foot of the volcano.
