The Fallen Star⋆。°✩
♬⋆⭒˚.⋆
Aurora was born to a humble family in central Eorlande, on a fiefdom overseen by a greedy lord. Her parents had been praying to the stars to bless them with a child for years, with nothing to show for it. When Aurora was born, she was seen as a blessing from the gods. It was then that her parents made a solemn vow to show her all the love they carried in their hearts. Her mother wove clothing and textiles all day on her loom, while her father toiled in the mines. They didn’t have much, but they had each other - and that was what mattered most.
Though she didn’t have many friends growing up, Aurora was always loved. Her parents cherished her like an unearthed gem, and wished nothing more than to give her a chance at a better life. They did their best to provide for her, thinking only of her future. Every holiday season and every birthday, Aurora would ask for one thing only - to learn to read. Encouraged by her thirst for knowledge, her parents pooled what little savings they had and hired a mentor for her.
It was rare for folk of their station to learn to read and write. But Aurora learned quickly; soaking up the knowledge like a sponge. As soon as she felt she was literate enough, she began an apprenticeship under the lord’s scribe in his keep. Though they never asked her to, every copper she earned, she sent back to her parents. Just as they had wanted a better life for her, she wanted a better life for them. It was due to their kindness and altruism that she was able to pursue her dream, after all. Aurora wanted nothing more than to return that kindness.
Everything fell apart when the plague struck.
A letter flew upon darkened wings to the lord’s keep, addressed to her. It was from the town clerk, solemnly informing her that her father was gravely ill. Though she loved scribe work and caring for the books in the lord’s library, Aurora put her apprenticeship on hold and travelled home immediately.
She spent what little she had on medicine in hopes of her father’s recovery, but it was in vain. The medicine did ease his symptoms - it simply wasn’t enough to stop the plague from consuming him. Her mother was the next to fall victim to its wicked talons, and she herself soon developed symptoms. Despite her own illness, the grieving young kalon cared for her ailing mother as best she could. As desperation set in, she prayed to the stars for her mother to recover.
On a particularly difficult night, Aurora found herself spirited away into the realm of reverie. Her tiny wooden boat bobbed on waters as smooth and black as ink as it crept slowly through a flooded forest. Gnarled branches reached wretchedly for the sky, yet even the stars had faded beneath the curtain of night. As she rowed, a blemished hand burst through the obsidian abyss, latching on to the side of the boat. Another quickly followed, and another, and another, until she was surrounded by sallow faces. The plague victims begged and cried out for her help. Her heart nearly split in two. There were so many of them. If she were to pull them from the murky depths, they would surely overwhelm her, dragging her to her doom. She couldn’t help anyone if she was dead.
A tear traced down her jaw as she turned her back, vowing to return once she had a vessel big enough for all of them.
As she sailed deeper into the tangled wood, the trees began to close in like hungry wolves. The darkness grew more and more oppressive with each stroke of her paddles. Bark scraped up against the sides of her watercraft. An enormous tower of rotted wood looked before her, skeletal limbs stretching into the endless void. A dead end. There was nowhere left to turn.
Just as she was about to give up, the image of her mother’s smiling face flickered across her vision. And all at once, she was awash in memory. Her father’s laughter as he took off his heavy work boots. The mouth-watering scents of dinner being prepared over the hearth. Her father’s big, beefy arms enfolding her in a gentle hug. Her mother’s calloused fingers carefully pulling her hair up into a bun. I will not give up hope. Her resolve hardened. I will find a way out of this nightmare, and get back to my mother. I will show her and any who suffer as she does the love she showed me.
A faint light began to shine in the great old oak. With a splintering crack, it opened before her, baring its heart to the world. Within its heart, a tiny mote of light flickered. A tiny spark of hope.
Almost as if drawn in, Aurora reached towards the light. She cupped it gently in her hands, and made a solemn vow. You are my hope, she realised. And I will never let you go out.
The light flared with sudden intensity, surging around her shoulders and plunging towards her chest. Though startled, she wasn’t frightened. Aurora welcomed its familiar warmth, allowing it to consume her.
When she awoke, her fever had broken. Somehow, she had survived the plague. Though she grieved the loss of her father, her heart was fuller than it had ever been. Love and hope bloomed within her, spreading through her shoulders, down her arms, and into her fingers, until it blossomed into a shimmering, radiant display. Almost as if in a trance, Aurora walked to her mother’s side, and touched her glowing fingertips to her heart. Light rushed into the ailing woman’s body. Colour returned to her cheeks; vigour to her face. When she opened her eyes, they were bright and jubilant - free of the milky veil the plague had placed over them. [999 words]⋆。°✩

Emily Dickinson wrote:
“Hope” is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -
And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -
And sore must be the storm -
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm -
I’ve heard it in the chillest land -
And on the strangest Sea -
Yet - never - in Extremity,
It asked a crumb - of me.
Aurora has since developed into a powerful mage and healer; the first to discover and wield lumomancy - the power of light magic. Lumomancy draws its energy from positive emotions, like hope and love. The more she helps others, the stronger her magic becomes. But even magic has its limits - she can only use so much before she begins to exhaust herself, and terrible things can happen if she pushes herself too far. The spark of light within her was found in her darkest moments, when all hope seemed lost. She discovered her own hope; her resolve to keep pushing forward no matter how oppressive the dark may seem. She strives to fill others with that same undying hope, showing them that hope is always there - even if it seems just out of reach, or even if you can’t see it.
As of now, Aurora’s biggest goal is to learn all she can about her new abilities, and travel the realms in search of other types of magic. She hopes one day to publish a book about magic, and teach other kalons how to wield it. She also hopes to teach other kalons to read and write, especially those who may not have had the means or opportunity. There is a stigma associated with magic, unfortunately. All anyone has known before she discovered lumomancy were the terrifying fables of dangerous witches and powerful monsters, who used magic to wreak havoc and destruction. Aurora wants to share her gifts with the world; to show them that magic is more than just old stories, and it can be a force for good - despite what the ancient tales say. [344 words, including poem]

Thank you for being patient while I judged this! I liked both concepts a TON, and really liked the vivid imagery and world building you both did, WitchHazel and honee bee!
In the end, the one that pulled just slightly ahead for me was WitchHazel's form! I just loved the soft and warm feeling from your art piece, plus the description of how the light magic felt for Aurora when she first harnessed it! It almost felt like I could use lumomancy :')
I liked both so much though that I didn't want honee bee to walk away empty handed, so I have decided to award you a legendary edit! The idea of speaking to the universe via music and it speaking back is such a unique and awesome concept, I started to wonder what song our own stars would play :3c
Thank you so much for entering, and forms for both things will be posted ASAP! <3

Thank you ThatPinkThing for the legendary edit! I really appreciate it!
I’m not sure if you want the space guitar art (pictured in the link to my TH form!) but if you want it I can grab the link for it! Here’s the link to the headshot I drew - and the flat transparent version. On chickensmoothie, please credit honee bee but off-site you can credit my toyhouse account or Deviantart (bee-a-trice)!
