“Sh.. it’s okay my dear.. you’re safe I promise..” the words sounded from inside the witch's hut, a soothing, comforting hum. Althea. Her poor daughter was suffering, writhing and whimpering in misery.

Elain whimpered and peered at Althea silently. A burning fever and a miserable cough. The poor youngling was suffering from the illness that ripped through the kingdom.

“I know it hurts my dear.. I know.. just breath.. I’m here for you, it's okay..” Althea cooed gently, trying to comfort the youngling. The witch in training's concern for her daughter was nearly palpable, anxiety creeping into the soothing coos. Atlas stood nearby, trying to watch Althea’s pacing.

Elain tried to listen to her mothers soothing, the comfort coming her way. Yet, the misery that wracked the poor younglings body topped her ability to listen to her mothers comfort. The weak youngling was snuggled up with several blankets enveloping her tiny body.

Everbound stayed nearby, supervising the anxious family, sorting through her materials. Every once in a while she brought something over, a dragon scale, a phoenix feather, something. The witch watched over, ensuring nothing happened to the youngling. She felt bad, watching the poor kid writhe in misery, but there was only so much she could do.

The sickness had ripped through the kingdom in a snap, crops had died and so many cats had fallen ill. None of the herbalists knew what was happening, scrambling to help all the cats to keep the Kingdom afloat. Everbound had been watching from the shadows, giving the herbalists help in whispers. Nobody trusted the witch, and Everbound knew that, so she ensured nobody knew where the advice was coming from.

Yet, this poor miserable youngling seemed to have caught the worst of it, even the birds seemed quieter. The world felt as though it settled into an unfamiliar silence, the birds were quiet, the mice stopped scurrying. Even the animals seemed to shelter in the younglings' misery.

Eirine, Avalon, Elodie, Ayesha and Anwyn all stood watching their parents' anxiety. The poor younglings watched their sisters misery, standing nearby and bringing over small trinkets to try and make her feel better.

The Fawn cream youngling was appreciative of the soft gestures, trying to slow her shivering. The attempts were useless, however, pushing her to the brink of tears. Althea was pacing frantically, watching one of her poor daughter fight agony as it rippled through her.

“It’s okay my love.. you can handle this.. you’re doing so good my girl..” Althea cooed softly. “You’ll be okay.. you’re doing fantastic right now.. I believe in you it’s okay..” her voice was no higher than a whisper, nuzzling her daughter.

“Mummy.. I don’t feel good..” Elain whimpered out, peering at Althea with blurry eyes. She was fighting her heart out, trying her best to be strong and fight the illness. But the illness was rippling through her, making her feel sleepy and weak.

“I know.. I know you don’t feel good.. I’m sorry.. you can rest..” Althea murmured gently, coaxing her into rest. Elain gave in, dozing off and surrendering to the weakness that seemed to drape over her. Atlas watched the two she-cats, furrowing their brow.

“Hey Althea.. cmon my love.. it’s okay.. let her rest peacefully.. she needs to sleep..” Atlas cooed, drawing Althea away to get some fresh air, ensuring she didn’t pace her paws off. Their tail wrapped around the anxious she-cat, drawing her away. Althea looked on nervously, not wanting to leave Elain. “Everbound can watch over her.. it’s okay..” Atlas soothed.

Finally, the couple moved away, allowing the sick youngling time to rest in peace. Everbound sat nearby, watching. Elain had been sick for nearly three days now, she could only hope that it was getting better now. The youngling was born smaller than usual, when they found her outside the kingdom, she was tiny and thin. An idea made Everbound act, she couldn’t let Althea know unless it worked.

Swiftly, she grabbed Elain by the scruff, ensuring she was still asleep as she pulled her outside. The air nipped her as she puffed up to ensure the youngling remained warm. All the other siblings watched from the doorway, supervising nervously. Everbound carried her carefully before laying Elain on the leaf covered ground. Orange, yellow, red, all the colours laid draped over the ground like a blanket.

Her movements were cautious, watching Elain as she stepped back. They were near the forest, the soft chirping echoing in the unnatural silence. Birds flew over, tilting their heads curiously as they stood near the youngling. Everbound just say and watched the birds carefully, trying to see if her theory would be correct. They tilted their heads, tapping the young she-cat with their beaks.

A rabbit jumped over, it’s nose twitching curiously as it lingered over Elain. The animals swarmed over the weak youngling, supervising the she-cats illness. Everbound couldn’t help but feel a twinge of pride at her theory being proved correct. Animals stood over Elains sleeping body cautiously. Before this day, Everbound had noticed just how drawn the animals seemed to her, always lingering closer than usual to the youngling.

She seemed to make the birds sing louder, the mice run happier, everything seemed more lively when Elain was healthy. Now, with the illness pulling her down, the animals stood watching anxiously, trying to ensure her well-being. The birds seemed to chirp quietly, the rabbit chittering as it watched. Everbound watched the interaction curiously, intrigued in the animals' actions.

It was a quiet melody, but after awhile, Everbound scruffed Elain and brought her back inside. Nobody was aware of what she did until the morning. Elain had been the first and last cat to get sick and to get better, so when the morning arrived and she was feeling better, it was as though a miracle had passed by the witch's hut. Nobody was any the wiser to Everbounds theory. Other than Atlas.

Atlas didn’t dare tell Althea, just giving Everbound a curt nod of thankfulness.

Response:
Oh, love, whatever did Swift'Star know of love. Butterflies in the chest, a head full of adoration, maybe flushed paws and too sweaty to catch even a mouse?

Well, Swift'Star knew nothing of it. Nothing of any sort of love, she never knew where she stood when it came to love. In the tribe she came from it was very much a loveless land, a place of secrets and forgetfulness. Nobody could remember anything there, not for longer than a month. Friendships and family dynamics never lasted long, as if some magical mist would destroy any memories of anything the tribe held dear. That included Swift'Star, when she left with the wind, uprooting her entire life, any cats who did pursue forgot what they were doing within a month of searching. Just as they did everything, Swift'Star too struggled to remember things back then, but once she finally broke free from the tribe's territory it was as if a curse was lifted and she was free for forgetfulness. So how did a cat who had never truly known what love was like learn to love? Well, it was a complicated story.

After she got settled in the Crater Lands life was boring and monotonous. Only sometimes broken up by quests or patrols which happened maybe weekly. Of course, she struggled a ton, her smaller stature combined with the fact she near constantly got confused for a baby raccoon didn't help things (that's a story for another time).

But, one day, filled with regret from choosing not to hunt nor forage, she found something ever so odd. You see, as Swift'Star wandered the desert, nearly sucumbing to the dehydration as the sun beat down on her she found herself an Oasis... Both physically and emotionally, as she met the fellow she-cat named Streaking'Sun. Despite being named after the exact deity that was causing the young leader havoc she grew to like Streaking'Sun. The young leader - ever so naive and love-stricken - followed the strange cat into the wilderness and therefor the unknown.

Swift'Star was brought to Streaking'Sun's home [which the leader was definitely not expecting], it was an abandoned barn house and they hung out there until night fell. Going out to play once the oppressive sun fell over the horizon and the air chilled. The two lovers ran out and played under the stars, surrounded by flowers and fireflies. For the rest of the night they talked and talked.

When they were sitting below those stars, the same stars that made Swift'Star feel even lonelier while reflecting on the tribe's legends and stories about the stars, now they felt welcoming and warm. Forever changed with a she-cat's love.

Response:
Streaking'Sun was relaxing in the Oasis she called home, reflecting on the chaotic events the week prior. The she-cat couldn't help but blush thinking about the other she-cat.

"Oh for the love of Hope's Tail, why can't I get her out of my head..!" she mewled, brows furrowing as she dug her claws into the sand. She'd been thinking almost obsessively about the confident and boisterous she-cat she'd seen the week prior: Swift'Star was her name. No matter how much she wanted she couldn't get that impressive cat out of her head, it was starting to get frustrating if she didn't like Swift'Star so much.

That was, when ever so suddenly, a small paper flicked onto her nose. As if it had just fell from the sky, or blown in the wind, straight into her paws. Right about now was when she wished she had opposable thumbs, as she struggled to flick the paper open. When poof, the wind blew it open.

At this point Streaking'Sun was suspicious that a god was to do with this. What kind of wind can blow open a paper yet leave the paper just sitting in front of her. But when Streaking'Sun thought it couldn't get any weirder a small box made of palmetto leaves plopped right next to her.

"Okay, there is definitely someone messing with me." the she-cat muttered to nobody in particular. Just at that moment she couldn't help but swear she heard a laugh, a lighthearted giggle that for sure came from a god. But alas, no matter how much she looked around and glared the she-cat could not get the god to come out of hiding. So with a sigh she finally glanced down at the letter to read it.

'Heyyy girlie' it began

"What kind of god uses.. two-leg slang..?" she muttered, squinting at the letter

'So, your little winged right-hand man noticed that you had a little crushy wushy-'

"Seriously..?" she groaned, her eyes scanning down the letter

'- So I decided to help you out! Awhh, call me uncle already I can't wait!'

"This is seriously weird, show yourself!" she barked out, to no response. The wind had gone silent. Of course, what kind of god would know all sorts of languages [and therefor slang] while also remaining invisible.. along with very playful.

A wind god, but she wasn't quite sure which. Maybe the letter would help?

'Inside the box is some tools, to help your cutie wootie self out and get yourself a lover already! Can't wait
OO [can't really send you kisses, can I?]
- Your friendly neighborhood god'

"Of course, the trickster won't even use their name." she sighed, nudging the box open "Now what's in here?"

Within the box were 3 items, nestled pretty tightly within the leaves. The first item was a cat pair of winged shoes, what she would do with these magical kicks? Who knows, definitely not Streaking'Sun. The next item was a very shiny rock, maybe something to give Swift'Star next time she saw the other she-cat? But regardless, the last item in the leaves was a small egg, slightly spikey and with the weirdest coloration Streaking'Sun had ever seen.

"Well.. that's weird" she mumbled, listening to the small heartbeat within the egg "I guess I'll keep an eye on it."

Streaking'Sun did what any she-cat would've done, nearly forget about the egg and the letter. She had went about her day and somehow managed to brush off and forget the entire incident. The weird giggling, the magical letter, the curious gifts. All of them were forgotten after a good mid-day nap. Who knows what would even happen to the egg.

The chorus of voices echoed through the night as the factions gathered under the full moon. Smokepaw squeezed past several warriors, meowing apologies while searching for his mentor. Sneezebelly had walked ahead, but the gray tom couldn't keep up. Distracted, Smokepaw bumped into another cat, letting out an 'oomph' as he stumbled.

"I'm so sorry!" he meowed quickly, shaking his fur. His gaze met that of a small calico she-cat, whose soft blue eyes radiated understanding. "It's okay. I wasn't watching where I was going," she purred. "My name's Shellpaw; I'm from Thunder."

"Smokepaw of Shadow, Sneezebelly's apprentice," he replied. "Oh, you’re a medicine apprentice?" Shellpaw asked, tilting her head slightly. Smokepaw nodded, embarrassed. "Yeah, I... wasn't much of a warrior, so I chose to be a medicine cat."

"Not everyone can be a medicine cat," she reassured him. "I think it's admirable that you chose this path." Smokepaw felt warmth rush through his fur at her words. "I never really thought of it that way," he admitted, managing a small smile.

"Shellpaw!"

The voice startled them, and they turned to find a dark tortoiseshell glaring at them, her expression tight with impatience. "Gathering's about to start. Come join the faction," she said.

"Sorry, Sparkpaw, I'm coming," Shellpaw replied before looking back at Smokepaw. "I'll talk to you some other time, okay?"

Smokepaw nodded eagerly. "Absolutely! I'll look for you at the next Gathering," he purred as Shellpaw joined Sparkpaw, who shot a stern glare at the tom before they slipped into the crowd. Smokepaw felt his face warm as he watched Shellpaw leave.

She was in Thunder, and he was in Shadow, not to mention he was destined to be a medicine cat. But Smokepaw couldn't shake a sensation in his heart– it felt like fate. He lifted his gaze to the stars, which twinkled merrily back at him. Maybe, just maybe, his feelings were respected by his ancestors.

"Smokepaw! Over here!"

The voice pulled him from his thoughts. He turned to see his mentor, Sneezebelly, standing just outside the crowd under the shadow of High Rock. Smokepaw padded over to join the older tom and his fellow medicine cats. "Got lost in the crowd," he admitted, eliciting a chuckle from the others.

"I understand; it's easy to get lost in a sea of cats," Sneezebelly purred. Smokepaw joined in the laughter as the Kin announced the start of the Gathering. The crowd fell silent, their attention shifting to the four leaders atop High Rock. Yet despite the booming voices resonating around him, Smokepaw's focus was elsewhere.

He spotted Shellpaw in the crowd, and their eyes locked. A smile spread across her face before Sparkpaw nudged her, shooting a disapproving glare at the calico apprentice. Shellpaw turned away, her smile fading, and Smokepaw felt a twinge of sadness.

But maybe, just maybe, their love could work.

For full effect, read all the dialogue in a southern accent.

The sound of a rooster's call welcomed No Name as he padded through the gate of the farm, a small leaf satchel swinging in his jaws. He glanced over the old barn that housed his family, a purr rumbling in his throat in excitement.

"Howdy, cousin!" a loud voice called out. No Name's eyes lifted and met the sight of Clyde. "Long time no see."

Nodding, No Name approached the tom. "Got somethin' to share with the family," he meowed, placing the satchel on the ground. Clyde nodded, then turned and a moment later returned with a gathering of cats.

"Well, would you look at that!" a small brown she-cat exclaimed from the group. "Never thought I’d see the day!"

"Hey, Magnolia," No Name purred, stepping into the group. They took turns swiping their tongues across his coat, welcoming him with a groom.

"Good to see you back, bud," a lanky gray tom said, his name tag labeled 'Gil' clanking against his collar. "Thought you’d be far away from here by now," chuckled a red tabby tom.

"Can't get rid of me that easily, Brutus," No Name joked back, pressing his cheek against the red tom's. "Good to see you."

"Who's here?" an unfamiliar voice called from the barn. No Name turned to see a dark tortoiseshell she-cat standing at the entrance, with four kits tumbling behind her.

"It's my cousin; he's here visiting with us," Brutus replied, motioning for her to join them with his tail. Hesitantly, the she-cat stepped forward, the kits tumbling at her paws.

"This is my mate, Claire," Brutus introduced, placing his tail across the tortoiseshell’s back. "She came from some no-furs that weren’t treatin’ her right, so we took her in." The she-cat seemed anxious, her gaze darting elsewhere.

"Nice to meet you," No Name purred, flicking his tail warmly.

"You said you had somethin' to share with the family?" Clyde interrupted, bringing the focus back to No Name.

"Yeah, I suppose I should finally tell y'all," the cream tom replied, stepping over to the satchel.

"I've got some gifts from Mary," he continued as he unfolded the satchel with his paws, revealing a sparkling crystal, a windchime earring, and a bundle of herbs. A surprised murmur rippled through the gathered cats.

"My little Marietta? You saw her out there?" a calico she-cat pushed through the crowd, her swollen belly swaying beneath her. "How is she?"

"She's living with wild cats down in some cave."

"Living with? Like settled down?" a larger black tom interjected, and No Name nodded in response.

"Mary told me she got caught in a no-fur trap," he explained. "Hurt her leg pretty bad and was found by a group of 'em. She said she can't get around as well as she used to."

"She got hurt? Oh lord, my poor kitten," Lucy said somberly, looking down at the items in the satchel.

"I know, Luce, but she said she’s happy," No Name reassured her, pushing the windchime earring toward the calico. "Marietta wanted you to have one of her chimes since she’s not sure she’ll ever be able to make the journey again."

The calico pressed her nose against the piece of jewelry, letting out slight sniffles. "My poor baby...," she whispered as Gil pressed against her, trying to comfort the expecting queen. No Name choked back his emotions, turning to the rest of the group.

"And she wanted me to give these to y’all. Said their healer used ’em to keep your energy up," he said, motioning toward the herbs. "Could help with the mousin’."

"Seems pretty useful, especially since the mice have been wild this season," Brutus said, turning to the large black tom in the group. "We’ll have to try ’em, won’t we, Jeb?" The large tom nodded with a chuckle before Brutus turned back. "What’s the stone for?"

"It’s from where she’s living," No Name explained, touching the crystal with his paw. "They listen to the vibrations or somethin', and that's their ancestors, but only certain cats can do that."

"Vibrations?" Jeb tilted his head in confusion. "Seems like a normal stone to me."

No Name shrugged. "Like I said, only certain cats can hear ’em," he replied. "I’m confused by it, too, but she seems happy with those wild cats."

"Well, as long as she’s okay and happy," Gil said, his gray tail flicking behind him as he glanced at his mate. Lucy's expression was melancholic as her eyes turned to the ground. "But I’ll never see my kitten again," she mumbled before padding back to the barn, Marietta’s chime hanging from her jaws.

The group started to follow her, with Gil carrying the crystal and Jeb the herbs. No Name watched them go, leaving himself and Clyde alone outside the barn.

"Thanks for visiting, cousin," Clyde said, breaking the silence. "Wanna join us for supper?"

"You sure you ain’t got enough mouths already?" No Name purred, receiving a playful shove from Clyde. The two shared a smile and a giggle.

"Come on, Jeb caught a big ol’ rabbit earlier," Clyde insisted. "I’m sure I could convince him to give ya a bite."

The two toms padded toward the barn, chatting as the setting sun kissed the horizon. No Name would leave his birth home in the morning, but for tonight, he'd share tongues and stories with his loved ones like old times.
