Unicorns werent always depicted as gentle ponies - in fact, they started off as bloodthirsty goats. Initially in mythology it was a ferocious beast more like a goat than a horse, who'd kill people and animals - even lions, considered to be the mightiest beasts - by impaling them with its single horn, but humans needed their horns anyway for their supposed curative abilities so depictions of unicorn capture are numerous. Even the "virgin to lure a unicorn out" legend, wasnt originally because unicorns were so gentle and easily spooked, but rather, because the virgin was the only person the agressive monster would not kill on sight!
