WEATHER !!

LEAFBARE || The days are cold. The nights are long. Snow falls periodically, coating the grass with a frosty sheen of ice. It is perhaps the hardest season, but many agree it to also be the most beautiful. Hungry predators prowl through the forests, greedy enough to attack fiercer opponents for the slightest chance at a measly scrap to eat. The levels of sickness rise to an almost unbearable point, and most agree on one thing. Life is hard.

Foraging:

• Pollen's patrol gathers 2 wintergreen, 1 meadow saffron, and 1 poppy seed to add to KeyClan's stores.

Families:

• Dragonscale's head hangs low and her tail drags across the ground as she approaches Dingdong. She takes a deep breath before sharing the news that she is not pregnant this moon, but that Pollen says nothing is preventing them from trying again next moon.

Assessments:

• As Creampaw rocketed through the trees, her paws gripping the rough bark with each leap, a gust of wind pushed into her face. Her eyes teared up, and she tried screwing them closed against the freezing onslaught. As she tried to continue her forward momentum, her paws became tangled amongst themselves, and she plummeted into the half-frozen creek below. Within seconds, she was being hauled onto the bank and licked dry by Boaconstrict. Her muscles tensed with shivers, and she leaned heavily on her mentor's shoulder as they made their way back to camp. Defeat weighed heavily on her, pushing her into the ground as Pollen decided she would need 1 moon of rest and 1 feverfew before attempting her final assessment again.

"And... why exactly am I here?" asked the confused actor. "You, my dear," the mysterious molly looked at her
once more, "are meant to restore this place to its former glory." The actor, faced with close proximity to the spirit,
took some steps backwards. "Me?! No. There's no way. I was simply passing through. There's no way-" She was cut
off, "You're the chosen cat. That must be so cliche, right? The random passerby who just happened to stumble
across a prophecy they must fulfill?" The old molly let out a snort.

"I- yes, exactly! And who even are you?" the actor padded forwards with a challenging look. The she-cat, however,
didn't back down. "Well, the twolegs called me Rosemary. But I always liked to think my stage
name - Mnemosyne - was my real name. Therefore, my name is Mnemosyne." She flew around the actor and only
settled back in front of the actor once she spoke. "Nice to meet you... hey, aren't you going to ask what my name is?"
She huffed and looked away when Mnemosyne began speaking. "Oh, but you see... I know your name! No, no, no,
close those jaws. Questions later! Or, perchance, never. Who knows. But... like me, you aren't happy with your
name!" Her eyes suddenly twinkled as if a metaphorical lightbulb had lit up above her head. "So let me strike you
a deal, friend - I can replace the name you now have with a different one across the whole universe. No one will
remember your old one. Except you and me, I guess. And, in exchange," she turned towards the stage, where
another cat was now performing an act, "you fix this place up. Gather a crew, a clan, if you will, and restore this
theater. Put on plays, musicals, dance to your heart's content - do that. Let it become your new purpose, like it
once did for me and everyone else. But, here's the kicker - don't let it fall apart again. No matter what. Or else,
the deal's off." The actor turned to the stage and breathed out a sigh. "I can tell you're worried about gathering the
cast members. I'll send someone over soon. In the meantime, try to explore the surrounding area a bit. It may not
be as desolated as you think." She purred and as they both watched the once performed play, the actor made up
her mind.

"A name for a purpose, so be it! I was looking for one anyways." Her eyes were fixed on the, frankly, fascinating
performance in front of her. Who knew cats could do that? "The deal has been made. Your new name shall be
Ananke, so you may forever remember the necessary choice you have just made." She looked at the actor and lightly,
almost imperceptibly touched Ananke with her bushy tail before pushing her forwards. "Now, go on. The spotlight's
all yours." Ananke took a few steps forward, leapt onto the now empty stage she had just been watching, and stood
in the very center. As everything started fading away, Mnemosyne began yowling. "Oh, right! If you, or anyone
else, ever wants to talk to me, all they have to do is curl up beside the lovely statue backstage, near the-!"

Ananke woke up right where the scenery had faded out of existence, the same stage and all, except visibly way more
torn and outgrown than it seemed back in the dream. There was lots of work to be done, and when she blinked,
Ananke wondered if she had made the right choice.

The medicine cat name ceremony wasn’t like a warrior one. No crowd of cats watching him set off, no frantic swim across high tide. Instead, the two medicine cats merely padded their way through the receded tidepools towards the carcass of the Whale-wood. The familiar scent of the spirits filled his nose, soft and rich and comforting.

Ravenpaw wouldn’t be scratching his mark next to the warriors ones either. His ceremony would prove itself. The spirits would send his name to him if they approved.

Koalastorm let him lead the way to the head of the whale. The two cats curled up, nose to nose. Ravenpaw’s eyes closed.

His eyes opened. No longer on the damp wood but the dreamscape the spirits used to send messages. Formless, misty, like the clouds on the sea in the morning. The vapour of the spirits swirled around him, bringing smells of cats and damp and the deep ocean. Licking his lips, Ravenpaw spoke aloud the words he’d practiced.

“Noble spirits.” A wind that Wasn’t whispered through his whiskers in answer, his voice impossibly loud and quiet in the space. He swallowed. “I have studied faithfully your ways under Koalastorm, the cat you chose to guide Tidalclan. She has deemed me - deemed me. Capable. And. -” He licked his lips again, struggling to get out the praise his mentor had given him. “She has deemed me capable and knowledgeable when it comes to healing, suitable to be a cat that walks the tideline between the mists and the land. I stand here, in your domain, to receive your judgement.”

There was no response, but he hadn’t expected one yet.

“I give you my name and my allegiance and trust that you will consider me worthy enough to be given it back.”

The breeze stirred up again, ruffling his fur and taking his name away with it.

And now, his proving. The mist whipped up into a storm, and the tom found his paws running. The clouds stiffened, rising up into great walls and closing in behind him. Wordlessly, bodilessly, the spirits urged him to keep going.

And so he ran.

Left. Now right. Right again. Whichever way there was enough of a gap in the clouds for a small black cat to squeeze through. He couldn’t see the ground below his paws but it must have been there. What else would he be running on otherwise?

He ran.

The thought worried him, actually. What was he running on. And for that matter, where?

Left.

He wasn’t sure what part of him was making the decision on where to go, either.

Left again. Now right.

Straight on.

A bird, a raven, croaked, and the tom looked upwards to see it, and -

The water caught him, gentler than it should. Paws churned upwards, reaching, for a sky that was no longer there. Mouth, open, expecting saltwater and choking darkness and getting - air. Of course. A dream. He breathed deep, trusting his body, even as his mind told him that he was doing something unnatural. The bird cried again, raspy voice reaching his ears even through the water.

It called him by name.

With a jolt, the little black cat awoke. “R. Ravencall.” He looked at Koalastorm, whose eyes were crinkled with pride. “Is. Is that it? My name?”

“Ravencall.” She nodded. “It suits you.”

They set off for home, the dawn turning the sea red behind them.

Lotusseed watched as the dark furred she-cat approached, a small kitten in tow. The patrol earlier
had found them, the kitten small and trembling as the rest of the court watched on with curious eyes.

Her coat was not just black, there was hints of...something dotting her pelt. It didn't seem quite like
speckles of white, as Lotusseed had heard could sometimes happen, and as Shamrocktrail seemed to
have.

No, the white was too faint for that, it almost looked like...

The stranger bowed her head to the Court. "Greetings," she said, voice soft. "I was told that you were
the ones to speak with in regards to joining your court?"

her kits, responded. "We are, Cordylineblade said that you and your son-"

"He is not mine by blood." the she-cat interrupted. "I take care of Spruce for his family no longer can,
but we are unrelated."

"I...see..." Peonystem said slowly. "In either case, the two of you are willing to separate? Cordylineblade
should have taught you a bit of our customs, including that sprouts such as...Spruce, are cared for by
Knights of the Thorn, our most trusted soldiers. You would join as a Knight of the Petal, his care would
go into others paws. Are you alright with that?"

Lotusseed watched as the she-cat glanced down to watch Spruce, who met her gaze, paws trembling.
"Yes" she said, turning back to Peonystem as the kitten flinched slightly. "Your court does not seem the
sort to mistreat the young. And if that turns out to be wrong, then I see no problem with razing your
garden."

Lotusseed, Peonystem, and Dustythorn flinched back, Dustythorn baring his fangs. "Excuse me?" the
Lord of the Thorn snapped, rising to his paws, tail lashing.

"Your garden is not the only source of Spirit power in this world." the she-cat said calmly, face neutral
despite the angry tomcat whiskers away from her face. "If your garden proves to be taking the
blessings you have been given and turning them to aide The Rot, then I will ensure that you cannot help
them any further."

Lotusseed's eyes widened as she realized the strange pale spots in the she-cats fur were growing larger,
glowing faintly even in the sunlight.

"I am Coal, Blessed of The Retribution. Spruce is my charge. Should any harm befall him, it will unleash
upon you a thousandfold."

After the rest of the Court had spoken to Promisedrose, it had been agreed that the newly named
Coalshimmer would be promoted straight to Knight of the Thorn. What further sign of trust and
loyalty could there be than to be Spiritblessed? Since Baelen had left their blessing on Coalshimmer,
then the court would honor that.

It also allowed Coalshimmer to remain as Spruce's watcher, though she had agreed to let someone
else mentor him when the time came.

In other news, it seemed that Antlerstrike and Tangletwist were growing closer as they continued to
watch over their apprentices, working hard to keep their training separate so as to avoid needless
competition. Although they were still clearly busy with their duties, Promisedrose couldn't help but
wonder if they would start courting once their time as mentors was finished.

“ Sunstripe’s ears twitched as he and Harestar sat just inside the den’s entrance, the pair surveying the camp. It was early morning and the cave was just beginning to brighten, the sun’s rays streaming through various small openings dotted among the roof of the cave. A few of their clanmates were already up, preparing for their day. Mottledshade and Pigeonflight were taking a moment to lovingly greet each other near the medicine den where Cloudpool was busy tidying the entrance with Dappleleaf. Some of the warriors, Ferretclaw, Echostep, Softcry, and Burrwhisker, were sniffing at the freshkill pile, with the latter still blinking sleep out of his dark green eyes, the group of four soon joined by Lilystem. A particular rush of fondness made the deputy smile, watching his mate, Thymepool, gently guiding three sleepy kits from the nursery towards the water pool to get a drink. Thymepool glanced up and the pair met each other’s gazes fondly for a moment before the pretty molly sent him a teasing look, as if to tell him to stop goofing off and get back to work. Beside him, Sunstripe heard Harestar’s stifled purr of amusement and turned back to the gray leader, eyes rolling slightly with a mix of exasperation and amusement. “You don’t have much room to talk with how you look at Juniperfoot,” He teases before the pair settle down to plan the day’s patrols, their expressions becoming more serious at the mention of the predator Owlheart’s patrol had scented last patrol. With the camp’s entrance only being big enough to allow the clan entrance into the camp, Harestar and Sunstripe felt secure in the safety of the clan’s kits and elders, and the young apprentices wouldn’t be leaving camp without their mentors to keep them safe.

“ Mistlepaw’s gaze tracked the new apprentices, her tail tip flicking with a mix of irritation and despondency. Rookstep’s and Frostflower’s litters had just recently been apprenticed and Mistlepaw was crouched half under the thick sagebrush that made up the camp’s borders, watching the four young cats bouncing around their mentors as the group headed out of camp. “Mistlepaw?” Concerned yellow eyes blinked at her in the dusky twilight light and Mistlepaw dragged her eyes from the apprentices to Sootstorm before lowering her gaze dully. “I’m sorry Sootstorm. I’m a failure,” The apprentice’s voice was quiet and upset, “You must wish that you had one of the other apprentices instead of a cat who’s failed her assessment twice. Flynn’s been in the warrior den for so long and I’m left behind with apprentices who are barely more than kits.” Sootstorm frowned, shaking his head as he listened to her. “That’s enough Mistlepaw. You are not a failure,” He stressed empathetically, following Mistlepaw’s gaze as the apprentices and their mentors left. Sootstorm’s eyes snapped back to Mistlepaw’s, silently making the young apprentice meet his gaze. “You can’t compare your journey to Flynn’s. It’s not your fault that a rogue attacked you last moon. If it’s anyone’s fault, it’s mine, I should have been more careful to ensure that the area was safe and I am so sorry that I didn’t. I shouldn’t have made that mistake in the first place and I will never make that mistake again.” Regret flared in the deputy’s eyes and he ignored Mistlepaw’s small noise of protest. “You are no failure Mistlepaw. You’ve had a difficult past few moons is all, and if anything, I think that you’re stronger, braver for it. Flynn may be a warrior but he hasn’t bravely defended the clan the way you have.” Mistlepaw blinked, her eyes flickering hesitantly. “You think I defended the clan? That I’m brave? But…” She trailed off as Sootstorm looked at his apprentice fondly. “Mistlepaw, you doubt yourself, your abilities but you shouldn’t. You’ve shown myself and the clan your abilities and dedication to the clan, and we’re lucky to have you. You’ll join Flynn and the rest of the warriors in time, but for now, let yourself rest. You deserve the time to heal and relax.” Mistlepaw’s purr was thick with emotion as she blinked at Sootstorm, speechless with gratitude at her mentor’s support and kindness. The deputy gave her a fond look before flicking his tail lightly towards her, “Go let Fadedmoth check your wounds now, maybe she’ll let you help out in the medicine den.” Mistlepaw nodded, feeling her confidence buoyed by her mentor’s faith in her as he headed off to send out the rest of the day’s patrols.
