What task would he get? Earn the trust and friendship of a mountain lion mother (and her cubs but presumably the insurmountable part is their mother's aggressively protective and predatory nature!)

What task would he get?: To catch a live rabbit! There's a funny story how he came to be stuck with that non-equid kind of task. The herd was enjoying an evening graze on a small, cozy pasture along the rocky line. Suddenly a young lynx bolted by, trying to catch a rabbit from nearby warren - the sentries were alerted but not alarmed, as a small lynx is no threat to adult equids, but Scorch, being loud mouthed as he is, just had to call lynx out on being too close to their herd. The lynx was, understandably, in a rather sour mood after just loosing her supper, and so she snapped back at Scorch, and it began  ... For quite a while, they kept going back and forward in their childish argument - which concluded only when herd leader finally got fed up with that loud scene and snapped, making the lynx disapper in the bushgrowth nearby, but Scorch had already been way too fired up to stop. The lynx had the audacity to claim he couldnt do anywhere as good as her catching rabbits, and not catch one no matter how hard he tried! How dare! In his absolutely headstrong mode, Scorch exclaimed he could catch a rabbit easily, even a live one at that - which the leader, who was very annoyed by bold youngster's behavior by this point, did not hesitate to turn on him immediately. He tasked the youngster to prove his claim be true and catch that live rabbit to prove everyone he had the upper hoof in that argument, which Scorch eagerly took to. Needless to say, Scorch came to regret that - the task turned out to be a perfect humbling punishment to cool down this hothead. Rabbits are nowhere near easy to catch, much less for a horse, much less on a rocky terrian, much less without hurting them!! And so Scorch still spends his evenings trying to catch a live rabbit - he will be at that for a while more, me thinks.

What task would he get?
The stench hit Jupi like a physical blow. It was a miasma of stagnant swamp water, rotting vegetation, and something else… something sickly sweet and utterly foul. He stood at the edge of the Stymphalian Wood, a place shunned even by the bravest Equids. His labor was to rid the wood of its monstrous inhabitants: the Stymphalian Birds.
These weren’t ordinary birds. They were creatures of nightmares, with bronze beaks sharper than any sword, metallic feathers that could be launched like arrows, and a taste for horse flesh. The dense forest canopy made it impossible to see them, their harsh cries echoing through the trees like the clanging of unseen hammers. Jupi had tried brute force. He’d hacked at the undergrowth with his hooves, hoping to flush them out. He’d even rolled boulders into the trees. But the birds remained hidden, their mocking calls the only response. Frustration gnawed at him. This labor seemed impossible.
Brute strength alone will not enough, he slowly came to realize as he came to a halt, huffing and puffing from hours of intense labor and effort, leaning his tired and trembling body against one of the stinking trees to temporarily regain his strength as he thought, searching his mind for any thread of thought and idea and finding a string of a thought, he pulled. The idea unraveled in his mind and he smirked, the idea and the confidence it gave him surging through his veins and reinvigorating him. He temporarily left the forest, not going far, and got to work. Jupi put together sheets of metal in the form of massive metal clappers, barely able to hold it in his mouth as he marched back into the woods with defiance and anger. He traveled deep into the thicket of trees and the large population of birds, and began to ring the clappers together.
The sound was deafening, he flinched and pinned his own ears to his skull and willed himself to ignore the noise and go on. It echoed through the forest, a jarring, metallic din that shattered the stillness. At first, there was only silence. Then, a rustling in the canopy, followed by a chorus of enraged squawks. The birds erupted from the trees, a swirling mass of bronze and feathers. They filled the sky, their metallic wings beating the air like a storm. Some launched their feather-arrows, which Jupi had anticipated and danced side to side, avoiding the hail of arrows, and clanging the metal of sheets together whenever he could. One by one, the monstrous birds stopped trying to dive bomb him and fire projectiles at him to take to the heights, lifting far above the reaching the lengths of the tall trees. Jupi watched each and every one leave the skies in his vision, and finally the clanging subsided. The forest was eerily silent. Jupi slightly relaxed his body, his limbs aching, his ears ringing. He surveyed the scene: the the forest silent and still. He had done it. He had cleansed the Stymphalian Wood.
Exhausted but triumphant, Jupi gathered some of the fallen feathers and bronze arrows, a gruesome trophy of his victory. As he trudged back towards his home, the stench of bronze and feathers clinging to him, he reflected that sometimes, even for a hero of immense strength, a little ingenuity could be more powerful than brute force.

What task would he get?
He would need to convince a river to stop flowing.

Here is a small story! I've tried to keep it short, but I just loved this idea!

65 times Thalvorin rushed the leader of the herd. He was stubborn, brave, and had some maybe misplaced confidence. "What do I need to do to take your place?" Every time, the leader would simply note "if you have to ask, then you are not ready"

That would never discourage him though. He would shadow, follow the leader, do as he did. He helped anyone who asked, and kept at it. Eventually though he'd rush the leader again. Something about this time was different. Maybe the weather, maybe it was his deeds, who knows. On the 66th time the leader said, "if you wish to take my place, you must convince the mighty river that flows through our valley to stop." Thalvorin, without thinking, agreed, not entirely realizing he was tasked with something impossible.

If the leader though tasked him with this, there had to be a reason. Heading to the river, he stood tall near by as it rushed and roared. "River!" He yelled, but the only answer was the water splashing on the rocks near by.

He again, never discouraged, asked the beavers near by. If anyone could stop a river it would be them! They shook their heads no. "We would never stop this river, it flows through the rest of the valley, what would water the plants we eat?". True, even he grazes on the fresh grass around the bank of the river.

Maybe the otters would know, they knew everything about the river of course. Once again they shook their head. "This river is our home and where we like to play, why would we want to stop it?" He nodded, of course on hot days the herd would splash and run in the river.

Lastly, the salmon swimming upstream, would they know? "Even if we did know we would not stop this river. It may be hard to swim up this river, but we have swam like this for years. These rivers protect our children and lead them to the ocean when it is their time to do so." Understanding, he also knew the river lead them through the valley, and if you ever got lost it would lead you home.

Heading home, he once again ran to the leader. The leader asked if he completed his task. Thalvorin shook his head, "no but I learned should not stop the river. It waters the grasses we eat, provides us water on hot days, and is home to many of the creatures in the valley. The river would not listen, would not stop if I wanted it to, and I don't. I've learned a lesson that, somethings in life cannot be changed."

The leader grinned. "Maybe you are ready to start training as the next leader of the herd"

Brisingr was given the task to tame fire. The herds have seen the power humans have over it - creating it from small stones, using it to burn their food (which the WMEs never understood why they needed to burn their meat, the predators never did), and using it for warmth. However they have also seen the destruction it causes when it runs rampant. Forests burnt to nothing, the air a choking smaug, herd members meeting their end... If humans can tame it, then why can't they? And Brisingr is the one they charged to do so.

What task would he get? Traversing a frozen lake at it's widest point.

The whole herd was preparing for winter festivities, and as one of the stronger horses among them, he had been tasked with finding a good pine tree for the occasion and bringing it back for the foals to decorate and for friends and family to exchange gifts under.

He had been searching for the perfect tree, going deeper and deeper into the forest, the mist getting thicker the further he went on, until he came upon a strange creature, a mountain goat with fur so white it seemed to blend into the snow and sky.

It looked at him with cloudy white eyes, as if it's blindness didn't affect it's ability to pinpoint his location at all. It spoke to him in a thin whispery voice that sounded like the winter winds more than the winds themselves.

"Wanderer, do you seek strength?" It asked.
"No, I have plenty of that." He answered.
"What about speed? I can make you faster than the fastest winds." The goat offered.
"I'm as fast as I need to be. No bear nor wolf nor mountain lion has been fast enough to harm me still."
"What about knowledge, wisdom, information? I have a vast array of information about healing herbs and how to tell when a storm will be particularly bad and how to survive it and forgotten spells that bend the very will of nature to your intent. Invaluable information that could make your herd's life exponentially easier."
He didn't understand fully everything the goat was talking about, but he was very familiar with the importance of knowledge, for it had been a particularly wise herbalist who had saved his life from sickness once as a colt. He thought about it for a while, time seemed to pass slowly and quickly at the same time, and yet the goat stood perfectly still as his hooves shifted his weight the longer he stood. Finally, he spoke again.
"Yes." He said. "I would accept an offer of wisdom."
The goat did not move and took a moment longer to speak, almost visibly holding back a grin. "Excellent."
"And what cost do you want in exchange for this wisdom?" He asked, unwilling to wait for dramatic pauses.
"You see this lake here?" The goat asked, and the mist surrounding them, as if on command, cleared just enough to reveal the edge of a frozen body of water of indeterminate size. "If you can cross this lake from this side to the other, I will grant you instantly all the wisdom I have gathered across eons of traveling from realm to realm." It said.
"That's it, just cross this lake?" He asked, not in disbelief, as he was well aware of how dangerous a task like this would be, but for clarification, to make sure there'd be no hidden twist.
"Yes." Replied w the goat. "Nothing more, nothing less."
"You drive a hard bargain," he began "but I'll do it."

Now Atlas was bright and he was experienced, but he knew, even with all his knowledge of keeping his weight even as he took slow steps wouldn't guarantee success. And though he knew this lake well, he also knew that the mist was so thick that even a lake he knew as well as his own hooves would become an unpredictable hostile obstacle in these circumstances. But he thought it was well worth the risk. It took him a very long time, as he was being exceptionally cautious about not moving too quickly or suddenly, three days, he'd wager, according to his own senses. He finally made it to the other side of the ly, exhausted, starved, but somehow dry, and in one piece. He didn't search for the goat as he continued walking on dry land. As he walked on the mist cleared, but his mind felt incredibly foggy as he started noticing the massive amounts of information he was now aware of. He smiled as he walked through dense trees, he had been right, it had absolutely been worth it. He walked on heading towards his herd, but he had noticed that everything seemed incredibly different, the rivers he recognized ran deeper, the trees were a different kind and the clearings and meadows were all in different places, he finally made it to where his herd usually grazed only to find he recognized none of them. He saw only one horse he recognized, but he had known them as a very young foal, and they were now old and grey, much older than him. They saw him and smiled, and he realized what had happened. He heard the wind whisper with a laugh "you were too cautious!" It cackled in the goats voice. He ignored it and approached the old horse. "Atlas, we thought you had frozen beneath the cold waters. What really happened all those years ago?" He wept as he began to explain. The old horse frowned with compassion. "You know what you must do, then, yes?" They asked. "Do I?" He said through tears. "I know how to move through the most dangerous winds and avalanches, how to cure the most persistent diseases, how to fight off the most stubborn predators, but I do not know what to do with myself without anyone I know!" He cried.
"You must make the most of your sacrifice. Spend every moment you can teaching the foals of our herd everything you possibly can, for we will need this knowledge for generations to come." He got a hold of himself in that moment and took the old horse's words to heart.

From that day forward, he taught everyone in the herd with a will to learn. Horses from other herds began to hear of him and seek him out for knowledge and to feed their curiosity and hunger for knowledge. He happily taught them as well, seeing the immense value of as many horses knowing as much as possible. He found peace in what he had become, and he came to no longer regret his decision to be cautious enough to survive along with the information that he gained that day.
