Vales’ heart raced, chest heaving with every breath, and though panic begged her to open her eyes she found herself unable. The young heifer reeled against the discomfort, but found neither relief nor answers. What had happened? Where was she? Was this… death? The very thought only made her panic worse as she desperately tried to lift her eyelids. Her ears rang, legs felt numb, until… in an instance… it all faded.
Her eyes slowly opened, the terror seconds prior dissolving along with the memory of ever feeling it. Soft moss cradled her head, vines loosely holding her to the earth but giving way as she began to stir. The air was crisp and cold, despite the sun, and she groaned as she lifted her snout from the grassy earth beneath to look around. It was a forest… or maybe… a garden? It was difficult to discern. At a glance the overgrown foliage, and towering trees would suggest a wild, untamed wilderness. But the longer she looked the more it made sense, the more it seemed delicately curated despite the chaos. Shaking the confusion away she brought her hooves beneath her and lifted her body up against the ground vines above her, leaving them snapped at her sides and still clinging to her back.

An ascension to immortality is something no one is prepared for, much less for those who reach it in the moment of their death. For many years Vales struggled to understand her life, her purpose, and with no memories of who she once was she knew not where to even begin looking for answers. The garden in which she awoke was one that always called her to return, one she would come to recognize as her own. With her presence, the nature there grew, as too did her understanding.
Everything requires balance, yet the longer the world had gone on the more it trended towards dysfunction and extremes. Thus, when needed, the would would find itself a champion to set things right. To bring things back into alignment. Vales was one such entity that was chosen for this purpose, to keep the life cycle functioning as it should. For many years, this burden scared her. And even after she grew to accept this responsibility, the longer her life continued the more she began to wonder if she was failing. She saw countless entities be born, grow, live, and die. And yet she, the arbiter of such fates, remained hypocritically stagnant.
Because of this, Vales' feelings regarding the cycle of life and death are mixed and complicated. In many ways, the cycle itself is a deity of a deity, an immutable force that Vales is champion of yet not above. However, in many ways, it always feels as if this cycle has abandoned it's greatest ally. Though she tries to remind herself that although she has outlived all she has known, it doesn't mean that she won't one day also rejoin the earth. But she fears she might be wrong.
