and with each step, a crowd of carrots mills about the garden, their feathery green hats bobbing up and down. flashes of gold, purple and orange bounce, each vying for max's attention and poking at his silver flute. an awkward smile curves on his lips as he waves you over, his flute wrapped carefully in his paw.

"hey, how's the investigation going?" with gentle care, he bops a carrot on the head, nodding once towards the garden bed. the tiny gold carrot sags, reluctantly hopping into the dark soil. "it's been an interesting time around here, lately. i thought gardening was hard work, but caring for sentient carrots is... well, even more work!"

he huffs as the tiny gold carrot hops onto his shoulder instead. "see what i mean? i'm trying to get them ready for bed, but i don't think my music impresses them too much anymore." a sheepish shrug lifts his shoulders. "i know how to play three, maybe four songs. any chance you know any they'd like?" he grins. "even better if you have a story that goes with it. they like that type of stuff."

Music and stories, huh? Well, Owlflight wasn't much of a performer, but he was willing to give it a shot if it meant buying poor Max a few moments' peace! Spotting a few particularly dozy-looking carrots off to one side, he trotted over to join them, thinking back to the songs Duststep had sang to Whisperwind's kits in the weeks after their birth. There had been a surprising number of them, all relics of his time with the two-legs, but one stood out in his mind.

It was a sweet, simple song with an equally sweet message. Once Owlflight finished his rendition- which wasn't half-bad, by his own estimation- he flashed an almost embarrassed smile at his vegetal audience.

"One of my clanmates used to live in a two-leg-place. He shared that song with us. It's a perfect 'story song' for kits, to help remind them to reach out and ask for help when they need it. Always makes me a little sleepy, too."

Now to see if that latter effect worked on strangely sentient carrots!
