First choice <3

Username: Hazelfang
Name: Breezy Fields of Heather "Heather"
Gender: Female
Name Meaning: As a member of the Gemstone Gardens, Heather's name matches the theme that all female dogs are named after flowers/plants. Specifically for her, she is named after the heather fields she had once called her home.
Prompt:

Many creatures are equipped with a self-defense mechanism of some sort. For some, their instincts lead them to fight their way out of danger. While for others, it's to freeze in place, hoping the threat will leave on its on. However, for those like Heather, their core instinct is to flee as far and as fast as they possibly can. As such, Heather has a complicated history of running away from her problems- no matter the size or complexity of the problem.

One such instance of her defense mechanism in action was when she was a young adolescent dog. During this time, Heather had been living with a pack of wild dogs in an open moorland. It had been peaceful, she found companionship amongst these dogs and they all took care of eachother as if they were family. However, this peaceful reality had been shattered when a vicious fire raged through the moorland. Many of the dogs had stayed unified despite the very frightening threat that was their home being consumed in flames. The dogs had worked together to secure a safe space in which they could hide and wait out the fire. While they knew it was likely hopeless they could ever live on the moor safely again, they had faith in eachother. Faith in the bonds they had forged. Yet, Heather did not share their faith. In the face of the burning flames of fate, she chose to flee. As far and as fast as she could. She wished she could share their confidence. She longed to trust that it would be alright, as long as they stayed together. But she simply could not. The anxiety of losing yet another home had overwhelmed her. And she knew she had to escape, to run away, to choose to lose her home rather than have it taken from her once more.

Name: Hazelpaw
Gender: Female
Name Meaning:
Prompt:
Hazelpaw has had an awful time as an apprentice, if she's honest. She's not the best at hunting -- rabbits are fast, okay? Really fast! And the moor is unforgiving with little bunny burrows to trip in and break a paw. She has sprained her paws at least five times; the medicine cat is kind of sick of her -- and she's sick of him! Her stalking skills are just not there. She loves going on patrol, but she's gotten lost by wandering too far away from the others many times. On the bright side, she knows the territory like the back of her paw! That being said, she also knows the boundaries of the territory because she's been caught trespassing no less than ten times. Other clans aren't even offended anymore, they just say, 'oh, it's Hazelpaw, send her on her way.'

She'd only been six moons into her training when her mentor raised concerns with the leader over her lack of progress. She overheard them talking and it broke her heart. She was never going to be anything worthwhile, was she? She stiffened her upper lip and did her best to stop crying when her mentor came looking for her. "Maggotmarsh wants to talk to you," was all he told her. She didn't want to hear what the stupid medicine cat had to say! He could shove his talk up his tail! She was going to pursue being a kittypet, she decided. It was a better life than being a worthless member of the clan. She gathered herself up and set out towards the border.

Hazelpaw reached the border and climbed into the kittypet homes' gardens. "Hazelpaw, wait!" That was Maggotmarsh! She turned around, bewildered that she'd been caught. "Why are you here?" he asked, staring down at her from the fence. "I.. I'm not useful to the clan, so I'm becoming a kittypet!" she said with her whole chest, puffing it out a little bit. He frowned, shaking his head. "You're not useless. I came to ask you to be my apprentice," he said, voice full of compassion. Poor kit must've heard her mentor's harsh words. He never had a way with words. "But if you want to live the life of a kittypet, I cannot stop you." Maggotmarsh turned tail and jumped back down from the fence.

"Wait!" Hazelpaw cried, scrambling back up the fence. "Medicine cat apprentice? Do you really think I'd be useful?" she asked, jumping down to be beside him. "Yes, you know our territory well and you have a bright mind, you'll take to herbs easily," he nodded. "A-alright, I'll give it a go!" She nodded with resolve.

Hazelpaw would go on to become Hazelpool, and thrive in her position as a medicine cat apprentice. Years later, she could never believe she had considered running away to become a kittypet!

Name: Venilia
Gender: Female
Name Meaning: Named after a wind deity.
Prompt: (2md choice!)

Venilia always seemed like a very confident and cheerful pup.
She never rejected to help someone no matter the task, she always greeted new dogs into the kennels, despite how feral they can look. Everybody thought she was so sociable and their owner were happy she was known because of it.

But there was a moment, when everyone was surprised by what this dog do. This collie recently found a partner, someone to share her life with. Everything seemed fine, they loved to be together, spending all the time possible. Who would have guessed what happened.

It was an important day, Venilia was going to meet his partners' parents. Everything went fine with the dad, but when it was time for the mother.... Venilia took to her heels and flew away!

Everybody was looking for Venilia for a while, not knowing where she was, where she could have gone, if something was wrong with her, this was not her!

She was found by the partner's mother, who gave a tender smile to her and slowly took her out from where she was hiding. Venilia was surprised for better with how tender she was, throwing out all the prejudice mother-in-laws, and started to create a bond with her so adorable and strong.

And Venilia never ran away again, not when meeting someone at least.

Name: Desert Harbor's Homeward Bound || Sassy
      Gender: Female
Name Meaning: Named after one of my favorite movies, one I watched a lot as a kid when my family had a VHS player, Homeward Bound! I also chose to name her after one of the pets from the movie, Sassy!
      Prompt:
      Where did her humans go?

Just yesterday they all traveled to the ranch she was on now. The road trip initially made her nervous, but after spending time in the backseat with her best friend, Pluto, and listening to the music that the humans played on the radio, she grew quite fond of the trip. It was nice to get out of the house, to spend some time with her family as they traveled over two state lines to get to a ranch. So, where was everyone this morning? Where did they all go?

"Sassy, don't worry. I'm sure they'll be back soon!"

Pluto was laying beside Sassy, his head resting on her back as they soaked up the sun from their spot in the grass. Maybe the family had just gone out to town to get some food, right? There was no reason to worry about whether or not they had left them behind... right? Sassy whined softly, lowering her head to rest it on her paws with a soft sigh, "We should go find them." She was worried, and although Pluto was trying his best to keep her anxiety and fear at bay, she couldn't help but wonder if she was being abandoned for the second time in her life... for the second time within six months. Part of her wouldn't blame the family for leaving her behind, but to leave Pluto here with her? She resented the idea that they abandoned him too. She knew firsthand how lonely and sad it was to be alone, and if any dog in the world didn't deserve to feel that way, it was him.

Pluto shifted his weight, moving his head off of her back as he crawled up next to her, brushing his side against hers, "They didn't abandon us, I promise. They're good people." Sassy's ears flicked back as she processed his words. Maybe she was just being paranoid.

"But... if it will make you feel better, I- I'll go with you."

Sassy bolted up to her paws, turning to face Pluto with a wide grin on her face, "Really?" Pluto nodded, pushing himself up and onto his paws, "Of course. I don't want you to worry all day, and... I don't want you to go alone." Sassy's tail wagged as she pressed her head up against Pluto's neck, nuzzling into his soft curly fur, "Thank you, thank you, thank you."

      ---

Sassy and Pluto set out no more than ten minutes later, running across the open grass fields and jumping over the white fence that surrounded the property. The duo weren't even two miles away from the house when they recognized a car in the distance. The duo didn't even stop to talk before they ran straight for the road, jumping through the tall grass as they barked, calling out to the car until it finally stopped for them.

"Oh my gosh! What are you two doing?"

Their family spilled out of the car, kneeling down to catch their dogs as they practically barreled into them. A symphony of whines and happy yips filled the air as Sassy and Pluto buried into their humans, trying to find a way to crawl into their laps.

It turns out, their family did go out for some supplies and food. Sassy learned two lessons that day. Not everything is as it seems, and her new family is completely different from her last. It would take some time to get over her fear of being abandoned, but if today proved anything to her... it proved that she could trust them.

Name: Sarah
Gender: Female
Name Meaning: [optional]
Prompt:

She didn't mean to run away. They just got her so frustrated and angry, and she wasn't even entirely certain why she felt this way. So she took a walk. She decided to make it a long one to cool her emotions and figure things out in her head. She did, kind of. But then she got distracted by some pretty flowers. And then there was a little creek she found and decided to cool off and play in. It was getting late and she realized she was getting hungry. She turned towards what she Thought was the direction of home, but she wasn't sure. Stopping to eat some berries to tide her over, she then set off again. Finally, as the light was nearly gone, she heard her name called. Running faster towards the call, she found they had been looking for her. She realized and knew then that thought they can drive her crazy sometimes, they were still family and looked out for her.

Name: SLK Star Chaser // Citlali
Gender: Female
Name Meaning: Nahuatl name meaning "star"
Prompt: Much like her friends Galileo and Mercury, Citlali adores astronomy. She was a stargazer from birth, and always adored watching the night as the stars passed over the sky. Often, she'd be out in the yard with Mercury, watching the stars rise from the horizon to setting past the mountains. One time, he dared her to follow the Big Dipper constellation throughout the night. Citlali, young and foolish, took him up on his dare. She ended up getting lost in the woods, and it took both Mercury and Galileo to find her the next morning! But, she didn't learn her lesson. One night, there was a meteor shower, and Mercury and Citlali wanted to find out where they fell. They chased them all the way out to the property line, before they realized where they were, and decided it was best to leave their answer as "they disappear at the horizon".

Name: Suzzallo's The More You Love The More You Lose 'Theo'
Gender: FTM (he/him)
Name Meaning: a diminutive of the names Theodore (gift of god) and Theobald (bold, brave people)
Prompt:

The crunch of gravel underfoot, ground soaked through underneath from last night's rain. A chill in the air, enough to numb fingertips but not turn exhales to fog, flushing exposed skin the color of a ripening peach with hairs standing on end. There's pine sap and sweet sage and the death of summer, if you close your eyes and really hold the scent in the back of your throat.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

Bend down and pluck lamb's ear from its stalk, run silky leaves between fingers that can't quite feel it right, nails tinged blue. The sun just broke over the plain not too long ago, rays warm only in color, gold filtering through the fields as the corn stalks shiver. Ears cold, too, hair the color of the fields the color of a mouse's back the color of your mother's pulled back into a thick braid, split ends and all.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

Tomorrow you'll be in your Sunday best, shoes too tight over top of lacy socks underneath a dress that's been worn by three sisters before you, each one leaving a bit of them in its weave and thread. But that doesn't matter right now, just focus, shove hands into the kangaroo pocket of your hoodie and roll your shoulders, shift weight from hip to hip, curl toes, flex each muscle and feel the tension just to let it go.

Heart beats steady in your chest as you warm up, wrestle the hoodie over your head and shuck sweatpants off without taking the shoes off your feet. Feel it stutter as coach waves from the starting line and shouts for his varsity girls to come do their run-outs. You all look the same, in blue spandex and white racing tanks, but you're the only one tugging at the front hemline.

Breathe in.
The single shot of a gun into the air, a quick crack-pop, hits like a bolt of lightning through your veins as practiced muscles tense and spring forward.
Breathe out.

"Go go go go go!"

---

When your English teacher asks what you want to do after high school, it's quiet in her room for quite a while. Maybe there's a phantom of a cricket chirping outside when you shrug and finally meet her gaze, patient, waiting for your answer. You don't think she'll be impressed with the eloquence (or lack thereof) of the words that somehow took you several minutes to find the courage to speak out loud.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

"I don't know." I didn't think I'd make it this far. "Just...I want to go somewhere else." If I stay here it'll kill me.

Her smile is soft, the wrinkles at the corners of her eyes just barely starting to show.

"Small town life isn't for you? Well, that's alright, dear. You've got a good head on your shoulders, and those legs of yours may be able to take you further than you think," she said with a bit of a wink, reaching into the top drawer of her desk and sliding you a small stack of papers and pamphlets and brochures and business cards. You must look confused as you rifle through them, the names of twenty different colleges bright and bold, happy students smiling at you as your eyes catch and stall on the words 'athletic scholarships', because she reaches her hand out and places it on top of yours, thumb gentle and soothing on the tops of your knuckles.

"Heather - keep running like you did this weekend and you might find yourself running down a different path than the one y'all practice on behind Jack's farm."

And oh, what you wouldn't give to trade that dusty old game trail in for city streets or suburban sprawl, anywhere besides here, the place where you grew up and your parents grew up and their parents grew up, an endless cycle, a town with one blinking red stoplight, where everyone knows everyone - or at least, they think they do.

But they don't know you. Or if they do, they refuse to see it, instead watch it lie smoldering or curdling under the surface of your skin, eating you from the inside out, twisting and tearing to be released, but it cannot be set free here.

And you've just been given a one-way ticket out.

---

"Why do you run?" Your first roommate asks as you lay awake in your dorm room, staring into the black void of the ceiling. You take a minute to try and conjure up a coherent explanation, but it seems you can't. Instead, you say -

"Why do you breathe?"

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

"Because I have to? To live?" She answers, and you twist your covers over you, turning to press the side of your face into your pillow, just to hear the slow thump-thump of your heartbeat echoed through your ear.

"And I have to run to live," You answer back, curling your hands in towards yourself, tensing the muscles in your legs to draw them in closer to your body, tightened into a taught coil.

It's almost quiet for a moment until a siren starts to wail outside, and you can't help but feel grateful for the noise of the traffic, the lights flashing on the other side of your window instead of the dead dark silence back home.

She hums, not seeming to understand, but that's alright. She doesn't have to.

Tomorrow your parents will leave and you'll cut off six inches of hair and memory, the shortest it's been since you were in grade school. The happiest you've been since you were in grade school.

---

"Why do you still run, Theo?" Your last college roommate asks as you paint each other's nails on the couch in your living room. You thrifted it and stopped speaking to your parents two years ago, the cushions as threadbare as the relationship you've managed to hold onto with your oldest brother.

"I have to," you answer plainly, but it's more than that. "I need the scholarship to afford the tuition," but it's more than that too.

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

You think of where your legs have taken you as you look down at your runner's feet, callouses on the insides of your heels, a blister on the second and third toe of your right, a bruised toenail hidden under baby blue polish on your left.

And you know why they're asking. If you've learned anything in college, it's that seemingly simple questions can have so many meanings. But instead you shrug, pretend you didn't catch it, pretend it doesn't bother you, that the very thing that allowed you to be here is holding you back. But you've got a doctor's appointment made at the school's health clinic for the day after the season ends, have been counting down the days for both reasons - that it's the last time you'll run competitively in college, and the first day of the rest of your life.

And maybe, for the first time, you're running towards something instead of away from it.

    Congratulations!
I wasn't surprised to see a few entries with the collies as cats versions, but this is the first I've seen with a human version of the collie! But more than that, I loved how heartfelt the entry was and the depth of the prompt's answer!
