You knew it was dumb to go driving so late at night, knew it was even more dumb to go out in the middle of nowhere without a full tank of gas in your car. You just needed to get your head off the stresses of the day, and the stars above you on a quiet road seemed like a dream. In theory. Until your car pathetically sputtered as the arrow pointed to the dreaded 'E' on your dashboard, and you were left stranded in an unfamiliar place, walking down the dark road in search of the nearest gas station. If it wasn't the darkness, where you could see no more than a foot in front of you even with your brightest flashlight, that didn't deter you into just hunkering down in your car for the night, it should've been the ominous howling in the distance. Or
was it in the distance? You couldn't even pinpoint a clear direction the sounds were emanating from, they seemed to be surrounding you.
Suddenly, your flashlight began to flicker, in a breathy, panicked whisper, you begged the light to reconsider, "No, No--"
But it couldn't hear you, and if it could, it didn't care, the batteries giving out and refusing to turn back on no matter how many times you clicked the button.
But you'd already made it so far down the road, unsure where your car was anymore. The urge to just sit down and cry was tempting, but before you could think about it for a second longer, a bright light emerged in front of your eyes, so bright you shielded them with your arm.
Hope filled your chest, were they headlights? Maybe you were saved after all--
"AHH!" You shrieked, jumping backwards, the only thing saving you from plummeting down the steep incline of the hill was the cold metal of the guardrail.
Big black eyes were the first thing you could make out, and the glowing light surrounding the creature who owned them was getting closer.
The creature didn't talk, didn't make a sound, but it was doing strange zigzags in the air, like it wanted you to follow it.
You decided though it had jump scared you initially, it
was kind of cute, and you didn't really have another option anyway, so you did just that. The creature stayed a good distance from you as it lit up your path, stopping every now and again to ensure you were still following, until you could see the florescent lights advertising gas prices in the distance. Relief took over any fear you still had leftover from the scary night as you happily ran forward, and as you turned to thank the creature who'd helped you, you turned to see only darkness.
