there was something so inexplicably breathtaking about the ways the stars fell tonight. it was in the way the night was so dark it turned a shade of bitter mahogany. it was in the way the night was a mere shadow once juxtaposed with the violent crimsons of the blood moon. it was only then when the blood moon shuddered, its beautifully violent hues reaching a cresendo and caving in on itself-- leaving remnants of reddened dust upon the barren expanse below.
    (+1 common myo, +1exp)

but the expanse wasn’t barren… not entirely.
for amidst the desolate greige of the woods, there was the gilded residue of life, its contours shifting into virdisicent floras and chittering cicadas.
perhaps the day wasn’t entirely wasted.

[1,037 Words]

It had been a few days since Zara, Envy, and Thea returned to the camp after their latest patrol. Envy had sent several patrols of cats out in an attempt to track down Fennel or Furzetuft, but to no avail. During this time, Zara had gradually worsened. She was coughing, her body was stiff, her muscles aching. She spent several days laying in the medicine den in complete silence and isolation.

One of these mornings, Envy would make her way into the medicine den, standing over Zara's bed. Zara's stunning blue eyes were riddled by exhaustion, and bloodshot. Seeing Zara like this made Envy angry in a way, and only more eager to find Fennel and Furzetuft, to figure out whatever was upon the rock Zara smelled.

"I'm sorry, Zara." Envy whispered softly. Her ear flicked towards the entrance of the den, her head shifting. Before her stood Avia, the clan's offensive medic, with a bundle of green leaves and soft red berries in her maw. Envy, thinking they were death berries, scolded Avia.

"What do you think you're doing? No way death is the only resolution for this cold." Envy spat. Avia, gazing at her in confusion, slowly lowered the berries to the ground.

"No no, this is Wintergreen. It's meant for treating poisons. I'm wondering if the cat you guys met was just trying to hinder you guys long enough so you couldn't track them." Avia explained, plucking a few berries off the branches before placing them before Zara. "Eat these. This should make you feel better. It's the last herb I can think of."

Zara, gazing up at Avia and Envy pitifully, took the berries in her maw, chewing them for several seconds before swallowing. That was all the energy Zara had to utilize before she dozed back off. Envy, looking over the molly, appeared to grow more angry.

"I'm going to find that Fennel. Figure out what that stupid stone had on it. Zara has never been in this condition." Envy said angrily, Avia's eyes widening in surprise.

"Envy, that is... surprisingly aggressive, for you." Avia remarked, immediately ceasing her speech when Envy turned to her in frustration. Envy then sighed, nodding her head in reluctant agreement.

"You're right. I'm sorry." Envy then made her way out of the medicine den.

She would survey the camp, gazing over each of the rogues and scavengers in her camp. Each of them was going about their duties, but she needed support if she was going to track down these cats, or at the very least, find their origins. Her gaze soon settled upon Soot and Kora, who were laying next to each other sharing a squirrel. The two were giggling when Envy approached.

"Would you two mind going on patrol with me, beyond the borders? I'm trying to find that cat that made Zara ill, and you guys have some of the best tracking skills I know." Envy said with a soft tone. Soot's ears perked up at the compliment.

"Oooh, you think I'm good at sniffing!" Soot said with a playful chuckle, yelping when Kora gently struck the back of her head.

"Respect Envy, if she says she needs us, she needs us." Kora said as she rose to her paws, guiding Soot to do the same. "We'd be honored to accompany you, Envy."

"No need for formalities, dear. I just need support." Envy replied. "But we need to move out now. Zara's condition is only worsening." Envy would soon guide the two mollies out of the camp, the two making their way towards the mountains of their southern border.

The group generally walked in silence, aside from occasional flirty banter between Soot and Kora. While the two were not officially together, at least to each other anyway, the two did flirt as though they were. This mostly comes from Soot's personality, but as Kora has grown more relaxed, it has rubbed off on her. Eventually, Kora broke the silence.

"Envy, you said this cat made Zara sick? How did that happen?" Kora inquired.

"Well, we were on patrol with Thea, and this cat approached us, asking where their friend was. I inquired why they need to know so urgently, and they essentially said it wasn't my problem, and left this stone behind as some form of gratitude. Zara sniffed it, and she's been medicine den bound ever since." Envy explained, her voice cracking from anger, which caught Soot's attention.

"Woah, mama bear, it's okay. Avia and Gale will make her better. What do you intend to do if we find-"

"When. When we find them." Envy interrupted.

"...When, we find them," Soot continued. "What will you do?"

"Ask them what was on the rock, their intentions, and make sure it never happens again. I'm never one for murder, even if you bring harm upon my clan." Envy said with a soft sigh of irritation. "I just want to get the message across that, even if my clan is understanding and devoted to loving cats as they come, I will not tolerate harm or disrespect of this magnitude."

"So, you're not going to hurt them? They hurt Zara, she hasn't looked that bad ever. I think it would be justified to go with eye for an eye here." Kora uttered scornfully, Soot's tail lashing softly.

"Kora, dear, an eye for an eye makes the world go blind. Let's just focus on civility, and maybe they'd be willing to help us out with some of our trifles as a sincere apology." Soot purred. The tip of Kora's ears heated in embarrassment before she averted her gaze.

By this point, the patrol had reached their border. Envy took in a deep breath before turning to Soot and Kora.

"We're going beyond the borders. The mountains would be a decent shelter for a cat trying to hide from us. Are you guys comfortable with that?"

Kora and Soot exchanged a look before nodding, and speaking together. "Yes, ma'am."

"Very well. Come on then, we have a cat to track down." Soon, they would begin making their way towards the mountains, each of them on high alert -- the Heart of Decay very rarely left their borders, after all.

Flurry was carrying the songbird - a sorry, scrawny morsel that would barely feed anybody - with her head held low. Maybe that was why she didn't scent the strange tortoiseshell before she practically ran into her.

Flurry blinked in surprise as Furzetuft approached. For just a second, her claws sank into the hard show beneath her paws. Then, the bouncing curls and smiling face came into focus; no longer was the dark and lean shape a stranger, but... a friend? Furzetuft certainly acted like a friend in the way she smiled at Flurry as she loped towards her. She almost reminded Flurry of-

No. Don't think about it. Don't think about her.

Willow snarled at Furzetuft in Flurry's hesitation. "Why should I care?" The healer snapped, plumed tail lashing. "You think you can just demand our herbs?"

"Wait." Flurry dropped the songbird to speak. "Wait, Willow." She rested her tail on Willow's back, making the molly stiffen slightly. She paused, then looked towards Flurry. Her face wasn't exactly soft, but the open hostility she offered Furzetuft has melted into guarded confusion. The way her tail twitched behind her hinted to just barely concealed ire. Flurry decided to speak quickly.

"Furzetuft is the cat Frost and I told you about. She warned us about the wolf." Flurry put a special emphasis on Frost's name in the hopes Willow would understand. She did: the molly's muscles relaxed and she turned back to Furzetuft with wide eyes.

"I-I'm so sorry." Willow stammered. Flurry could smell the faintest whiff of fear coming off her. She didn't blame the healer. All cats who were raised in the forest heard of spirits and the fae; Frost wasn't quite sure where Furzetuft and some of the other rogues that visited the territory fell on that spectrum, but they could tell well enough that said rogues weren't normal. Frankly, the fact that Frost didn't know what they were only made Flurry feel more justified of being wary of them. Furzetuft hadn't seemed hostile though, instead appearing to be the typical 'asks for favors and grants favors in return' sort of entity. She seemed pleasant enough too: despite how Willow had greeted her, the curly furred tortie smiled pleasantly at her.

"No need to worry. I understand - herbs are scarce during Leafbare. I hate to ask you again, but I can't seem to find anything." Furzetuft smiled apologetically. "If you have none to spare, then I-"

"No!" Willow interrupted Furzetuft with a shout. Furzetuft stopped, giving the healer a curious look. Willow shrank under her gaze but met her eye. "We have some lungwort we can spare. Will that be enough?"

"That would be perfect." Furzetuft purred. "Thank you, really." There was none of the cruel amusement in the molly's voice that Flurry had been told to expect of the fae. No needle-like fangs or roots for claws like spirits may have. She truly seemed like a normal cat except... she smelled wrong. Flurry wasn't sure what it was, only that sometimes Frost came back with whisps of the same smell on her fur whenever she went to the Skytree. Strange.

Willow dipped her head to the molly. "Of course. I'll go back to my camp to fetch it for you." When she raised her head, she collected the feverfew from Feya and the songbird from Flurry. She shot the warrior a wide-eyed glance before she left, leaving Flurry and Feya alone with Furzetuft.

With her mentor gone, Feya approached Furzetuft curiously. Flurry watched, relaxing ever so slightly. She trusted Furzetuft not to hurt Feya.

"You're beautiful." The purple apprentice breathed.

Furzetuft laughed lightly, the sound like chiming bells. Her curls shone in the early morning sun. "Thank you, little one. I don't believe we've met before?"

Feya shook her head. "We haven't, but Damir told me you met Flurry. My name's Feya."

"It's good to meet you, Feya." Furzetuft purred. "Are you a medicine cat apprentice? I saw you were carrying herbs for your friend."

"My friend?" Feya echoed. "Oh, you mean Willow! I'm her apprentice - we're both healers. What's a medicine cat?"

Furzetuft flushed. "Healers! I'm sorry, I forget that's what you're called here." She dipped her head to the apprentice.

Feya tipped her head curiously at the molly. Flurry narrowed her eyes.

"What do you mean?" Flurry spoke. Not angrily, though her voice always sounded flat these days.

Furzetuft glanced to the side. "You don't-? Ah, well, um-"

The sound of crunching snow rapidly drawing nearer made Furzetuft pause. She looked towards the sound, brows furroed slightly, and smiled when Willow emerged from the underbrush. She had a bundle of dried stems and leaves held between her jaws. Tiny purple flowers dotted the tops of the stems in small clusters.

Willow approached the traveler, not seeming to notice the conversation taking place. She placed the herbs at Furzetuft's paws. "Will this be enough?"

Furzetuft beamed. "Yes, this is perfect! Thank you so much." She purred. "I'll be resuming my travels now, but first-" the molly produced a small bundle of leaves carefully bound with dried plant fibers. Willow blinked in surprise and shied away from it, but Feya stepped forward and took the parcel from Furzetuft's grasp.

"A gift for your help." The molly smiled. "It was good to see you again Flurry." She turned to the stoic warrior and dipped her head slightly. Flurry found herself returning the motion.

"You too."

Furzetuft smiled at her, then dipped her head to Feya and Willow. "Thank you again for your help! I won't forget your kindness." Her amber gaze focused on Willow for a moment, twinkling with mirth. "Be safe this Leafbare. It's going to be a cruel one." Her voice became a touch graver. A chill ran up Flurry's spine. Was that a warning? Did Furzetuft know something?

If the others noticed, they didn't react. Feya beamed up at the strange molly. "You be safe too! Come back to visit!!"

~

The patrol continued after Furzetuft left. Feya was talking incessantly about Furzetuft, and while Willow didn't seem to want to talk about the molly, Flurry found herself answering Feya. At first, it was only because she felt bad about the excited apprentice's questions going unanswered, but then Flurry began enjoying the conversation. All of the other cats in camp treated her differently after the wolf. For many, that was the first time they realized just how... damaged Flurry was, Flurry suspected.

But Feya didn't seem to mind. She was chattering at Flurry like she did before, and for once, Flurry found herself responding.

Despite their chatter, the small group managed to get more work done. Flurry caught a hare, and Willow and Feya found some lovage and deadly nightshade between them. Flurry wasn't sure why the healers would want to collect such a terrible poison, but Willow explained with the dark berries between her paws.

"Some of the merchants and traders outside of the territory will trade for these." She nudged the berries with her paw. "A skilled cat can make a cure for the illness caused by the berries with their juice."

Or they could poison somebody, Flurry thought, eyes narrowed at the berries. "Are you going to go trade?"

Willow nodded. "I am. We need more herbs, and maybe I'll be able to get some prey for these too." She explained. "You two go back to camp. I'll catch up."

Flurry's eyes widened. "Are you sure? I can come with you to-"

"I can protect myself." Willow cut Flurry off with a thin smile. "I used to be a kittypet, not useless. Feya can't carry everything by herself anyways." She gestured to the apprentice with her paw. Flurry looked over and saw it was true. Though she would only be carrying the hare, a small bundle of herbs, and the strange parcel, the hare was large - almost as big as the apprentice, really. It was a good catch, one that made Flurry feel better about herself. Maybe instead of tracking down each of her clanmates and trying to apologize or explain, she could apologize by providing for them. She would have to triple her hunting efforts. She wouldn't make it back in time to join the sunhigh patrol, but maybe she could go out on her own?

Willow stepped in front of her, pulling Flurry out of her thoughts. She leaned back, but the shaggy molly was only going to touch her nose to Feya's forehead. "Tell Lev I'll be back soon, okay?"

"Okay." Feya looked her up and down with furrowed brows. "Promise to be safe?"

"Of course." Willow smiled. With that, she stepped away and picked up her herbs. She nodded to Flurry and Feya before heading off to the border. Flurry watched her go for a moment before Feya broke the silence.

"She's worried about my mom." Feya's voice was small. "We have plenty of herbs, but she wants more. She never lets me go with her."

Flurry blinked down at Feya. "Does she go trade often?"

"Not really," Feya shrugged, "but she's been doing it more." She frowned. "I'm worried about my mom too."

Flurry frowned. She could remember being so worried when her mother was pregnant with her younger siblings. She couldn't have been much older than Feya. How had she forgotten?

"I know." What else could she say?

"I'm worried about you, too." Feya looked up to meet Flurry's gaze. "We all are."

"I know." She looked down, tail tip twitching. "I'm not-" Flurry huffed, then sighed. "I'll be fine." Feya was silent. She didn't move, and for some reason Flurry couldn't bring herself to meet her eye. She could feel the purple apprentice just... staring at her. Waiting.

Well, whatever Feya was waiting for, she wouldn't get it. Flurry had more hunting to do, and couldn't waste time being stared down by an apprentice.

"Come on." Flurry spoke briskly, but tried to keep her voice from being too harsh as she turned to grab the hare. Feya hummed in response, and picked up her bundle of herbs and the parcel. After sparing a glance to make sure Feya was following, Flurry began to lead them on the silent journey back to camp, keeping an eye out for more prey and herbs along the way.

~

Willow trudged through the thick snow. It was looser here, and had no layer of ice that she could walk on top of. She was up to her knees in snow, and there was more snow underneath her. The snow underneath was packed, however, and provided a stable surface for the healer to walk on. Even still, Willow tried not to think about how deep it truly was.

The trek to the border didn't take too much longer. She, Feya, and Flurry had already gone quite far as they searched for herbs, so it took Willow just under fifteen minutes to reach the edge of the forest. As the trees grew sparser, the lake came into view.

Damir named LakeClan for the lake in their territory, and for good reason. The lake was massive, so large that it seemed to fill the horizon. She could just barely make out trees on the other side; Willow knew just by looking that it would take more than a day of travel to reach the other shore. The lake was a rich cerulean blue that grew darker where the water was deeper. Willow had never braved the lake - even when it was covered in a thick layer of ice, like it was now - but some of her clanmates had told her it was dark as the night sky at its deepest. Strange creatures lived in the lake: fish larger than cats, spiky red bug-like creatures as big as her paw, and something the others called seals.

Seals were terrifying, if harmless creatures. She had seen a colony of them once, laying on the rocks and sunning themselves like cats. Willow had decided that she never wanted to see them again. They weren't aggressive, but just the sight of them made her head spin. They were almost as long as a deer, but had none of the sharp angles and muscles of one. In fact, seals appeared to be almost entirely made out of fat and squishiness. They had no legs to speak of, only strange appendages like a fish's fins where their front legs should be and a fish-like tail where their back legs should be. Yet despite all of their fish-like qualities, seals could laze about in the sun for hours it seemed. They certainly didn't belong out of the water - the strange things could hardly do more than flop and roll around with their odd limbs - but they had fur. Fur! Willow was certain she'd seen it on the drier ones, a thin layer of fur puffed out by the wind. Their face was more like a dog's than that of a fish too, complete with massive, dark eyes that sent chills up Willow's spine.

Feya had called them cute. Cute!! Willow couldn't understand. Just the sight of them sent her mind reeling and made her stomach churn. They were a conglomeration of mismatched parts and very, very wrong.

A chorus of strange barks rang out over the frozen lake, making Willow shudder. It wasn't a pack of dogs - though she almost wished it was - but the damned seals. On top of having a dog's face, they had a dog's voice. Willow didn't want to understand.

Luckily, the seal colony was far away from where most merchants set up their shop. Willow kept her gaze turned deliberately away from the lake as she padded along its banks. She was now officially out of LakeClan territory, but very few cats occupied the forest. Only the merchants visited, and even then they often traveled around the forest and into the Twolegplace in search of good and trades. Most cats found the area too harsh. Willow hoped at least one of the would be at the trading post, her paws were starting to go numb.

It took Willow another ten or so minutes of walking to find the rock that was the trading post. This area had been deemed neutral ground long before LakeClan took up residence in the forest, or so Willow had been told. Cats from all walks of life could come here to trade and talk in peace, from rogues to kittypets and even cats from the Old Clan. Willow herself had never gone prior to joining LakeClan, but Rye and Lev had apparently been out here once or twice as kittypets.

The rock itself was another strange thing about the forest; the lakeshore was rocky more than it was sandy, but the trading post rock was far larger than any of the stones that could be found along the lakeside. It was large enough to comfortably hold at least twenty cats! If Willow had to guess, it probably slid from the nearby mountains years ago. To further support that theory, there were many large shards of stone strewn about the area and the path leading to the trading post itself. Many of these rocks had hollows dug underneath them that cats would sleep in or store their goods while waiting to trade.

Luckily, Willow didn't have to wait. As she stepped onto the snow-covered stone, a grey tabby called out to her.

"Willow! Is that you?" The cat called out. Willow squinted, trying to make out his shape.

"Wahoo?" Willow cringed inwardly as she called out the tom's name. He just had to be a former kittypet. What kind of name was Wahoo? Willow always worried she sounded sarcastic when she said his name. Wahoo.

He was certainly energetic enough to fit the name, however. He was grinning ear to ear as Willow approached.

"I was hoping to see you!" He beamed. "One of my friends is sick and needs some herbs. Are you here to trade those?" He nodded towards the herbs Willow as she placed them at her paws.

The molly glanced at the basket of fish by Wahoo's side. Some of those fish were as long as her tail! Her clan could definitely use one, but...

"I don't think think these herbs will help your friend." Willow frowned slightly as she gestured to the dark berries.

Wahoo was quick to talk, stopping whatever Willow was going to say next. "Oh, no, these are exactly one of the herbs they told me to look for! Black berries in the center of a star," he reached forward to point to the berries with a claw, "and smooth, pointy leaves." He beamed at Willow. "Would you be willing to trade? I have something quite special for anyone who can help my friend!"

Willow's brow furrowed. She glanced down at the berries, then looked back to Wahoo's smiling face. Her stomach felt uneasy. For the first time, Willow noticed another scent underneath the usual smell of fish and water that clung to Wahoo's fur. He smelled like...

Furzetuft.

Willow's heart skipped a beat. She edged away from the tom, eyeing him warily. "Wahoo... these are poisonous." Her voice was low, soft. The tom's smile faltered. Did he seem surprised? Tentatively, Willow continued: "Just how sick is your friend?"

Wahoo looked down. It was a long time before he spoke, almost as if he didn't want to admit it. "He... he's been sick for a very long time. He's not going to get better."

Willow understood at once. Her Twoleg had been a vet, after all. Her heart ached for the grey tom. She'd never seen him so... defeated.

"I'm so sorry." Willow reached one of her paws out to Wahoo. She hesitated for just a moment, then laid it over his. He looked up, surprised. His features softened into a sad smile.

"Don't worry about it, miss." Wahoo was quieter than Willow had ever heard him. "I caught some fish for us today!" Willow could practically see the effort Wahoo put into sounding chipper. "We were going to eat them with some honey I've been saving." His eyes took on a wistful look. He was silent for a moment, staring at something Willow couldn't see, before his gaze refocused on her.

"I can't- I won't be trading my fish today. But I have something else to offer you, if you would still be willing to trade."

Willow tried to put on a reassuring face. What would that even be? She stopped trying, instead just... witnessing the strange tabby. Letting the moment sit with them.

"Of course." Willow's voice was soft. She nudging the nightshade into Wahoo's paws with her own. "Anything you can spare will do." Her clan needed more, but... it didn't have to be from him. She could find more herbs, more prey once she left. And she would be leaving, and soon as was socially acceptable. Best to let Wahoo spend time with his friend rather than keep him here.

Falling Stars
Last Post Last Reply Clan Territory

[340 words]

SwiftStar ran through the territory, it was first light and seemed to be the best time to explore. Without the risk of the unbearable heat, though she always had to be careful of the animals. The area was vast and mostly empty, with a couple clusters of barren trees. Looking north towards the Barren-Foot Mountains she smirked, that's where she'd check next. Traipsing around the territory she discovered it would be a lot harder than she originally believed to get up the land towards the mountains. It was much too tall for her paws.

"Gah, wish I had longer legs" she scratched the ground. Then glanced over to the foothills to the west. She smirked, running up the hills to the heightened land. But she discovered another difficulty. To get to the Barren-Foot mountains.. and beyond, she'd have to leap over a good sized gap through the heightened lands. SwiftStar approached, eyeing the fall with apprehension

"Maybe another day" she looked around, gazing across the empty landscape, focusing South. She spotted a river near the edge of the crater lands, a waterfall cascading down the edge to form a little river. There, that's where I'll go, she thought to herself as she carefully used the foothills to get back into the shortened lands. Deciding to take her time, it took until sunhigh to reach the river. SwiftStar noticed that because of the water falling from the edge of the crater lands, there was some steps she hadn't noticed, it seemed that the heightened lands weren't the only way to reach the crater lands safely. She pawed at the dirt, it scraped away, leaving rocks for her claws to dig into.

It felt like forever, but eventually she managed to go beyond the borders of the crater, out of her lands.. She hadn't seen the southern edge, her jaw slacked as she looked out at the most beautiful sunset over a cliff.. She padded forward, sitting at the cliff, staring out at the sun as it set below the outer lands.

his eyes were a shade of cornflower blue so melancholic it made the skies weep. there was a pallid flush to his cheeks, accentuating the dip and hollow of his cheekbones. “i can’t thank you enough.” his voice was barely more than a songbird rasp dissipating into silence. “i only have this to give.” he reached out then… his touch flowing upon her skin as if it were honeyed wine. and from his very touch, a flourish of stardust sprang to life upon her skin, its very essence startlingly warm as it sank into the marrow of her bones.
and then he was gone… with nothing left of the stranger but the freckles of stardust upon her cheekbones.
(+50 stardust from completed wahoo quest, +1 common edit from completed furzetuft quest)

it was only then her daze of lucid dreams splintered, its lavender haze doused with a clarity so startling she lost her footing, stumbling into a carcass whose skin was adorned with flowers and feathers tinged with rot.

her lips parted around a gasp as she floundered about, disoriented by a bout of hysteria as bones sank into skin.

the colors of the sunset bled into every sandstone edge of the cliff, gilded ribbons of sunshine cascaded into shades of rosewater and violently beautiful streaks of fire. it was as if the sun was made up of honeyed wine, its edges bleeding into something wholy fluid and so beautiful it made the gods drunk on its very essence.

but beneath its sunkissed allure, a dead butterfly trapised upon a warm southern wind, its wings a shade of burnt auburn and its movements clumsy as if it were a puppet pulled about with strings of spun sugar. the wind relented then and its frenzied motions stilled. and with that, the butterfly’s fragile body descended among a heap of deadened flora.

Stars.

His touch was like stars, tingling upon her skin, glittering behind her eyes. Her eyes widened as his touch flowed over her. Trying to see more of the stars. Fill her gaze with constellations forever.

Then it all went away.

Like a puppet with cut strings, Willow dropped. She stumbled to catch herself, one paw sinking through the soft touch of petals and feathers to crunch against bone. With the after-images of starlight dying in her eyes, on her skin, Willow screamed. Only when the nebulas swirled from her eyes did she see what had happened.

She fell, and stepped on a duck. She didn't remember the duck being there, or the herbs alongside it. She was certain she-

Wahoo's usual cheerful smile came to mind, and the warmth that radiated from him. Then those eyes, bottomless pools of sorrow, darker and deeper than the waters on the horizon. She felt the whispers of the warmth that washed under her still clinging to her fur, as if she'd been laying in the sun for hours. What was...?

Was he like Furzetuft, then? Was Furzetuft like that? The clarity that had made her fall grew foggier by the second. Willow shook her head. She needed to tell Frost about this.

Willow ended up bringing the duck and herbs with her. With nothing else to go off, she assumed that they were what Wahoo offered her in return for the nightshade. Why he didn't just say that, Willow didn't know. Wahoo wasn't there to snark at about it though, and Willow didn't think she was in the right mind for it even if he was. Her mind was vacant even as she walked through the snow-covered forest. That warmth... those stars... it haunted her even now. It followed her, even as she approached her camp.

~

Frost was very interested in what Willow had to say, but even more so in the stardust that freckled her pelt. The starspeaker insisted that they groom the glowing dust from Willow's pelt as she told them what happened. For her part, Willow didn't pay much attention to what exactly Frost was doing with the stardust, though when she stood she noticed they had a small pouch at their paws.

"What are you going to do with that?" Willow asked, tipping her head at Frost.

Frost smiled. "This is very valuable. I'll be able to trade with spirits and StarClan - maybe even the fae - with this." They explained. "Your friend must have truly wanted what you offered. What did you give him again? Herbs?" Frost's voice was light as they spoke. How were they so unbothered by this? Willow's mind was still reeling.

"Nightshade." The healer clarified. She thought she saw Frost's smile for a moment, but if she did then the silvery cat was smiling again so quickly she couldn't tell. "It was for his friend. They were... sick."

"Some sickness." Frost replied. Willow couldn't quite tell how they meant it; their voice wasn't monotone, but it was... hard to read. Did they know something?

Before Willow could ask, Frost stood and turned their smile towards her. "You did well trading with him and Furzetuft. They seem to like you." After that, Frost's smile did falter. "Just... try to avoid them for a little while. Trusting a spirit isn't always wise - I'd like to look more into them before you interact with them more."

Willow eyed them cautiously, but nodded. It felt like there was something the starspeaker wasn't saying. And they were smiling again.

"...Okay."

"Thank you." Frost dipped their head to Willow. "I'm going to take this back to my den. Farewell." They nodded at Willow before they trotted away, tail head high. Willow stared after them for a moment. They were always so... strange.

Regardless, she had other things to worry about. The clan had more than enough herbs now. The healer collected her own items and padded off to the healer's den.

~

In their own den, Frost carefully put the pouch of stardust next to several other similar pouches. They had received this material from spirits - both of the earth and of the mortal kind - before, but it was unusual for a cat not gifted as Frost was to receive it. At least, it was unusual back in their former colony. In LakeClan, cats were given piles of stardust for a few leaves or a half-decent squirrel. And it wasn't as if the spirits here held stardust in less value either - Frost had already found the stardust trader named Angelquartz, and already traded for a small blessing to be placed upon the clan. The spirits here bartered in stardust, but they also seemed entirely too willing to part with it for almost nothing. Frost didn't know why, and it worried them.

This had to be solved. Spirits weren't just kind for no reason. Even when entirely benevolent, there was a cause, a pact, something. Frost had to find out what, and quickly; if it was a pact LakeClan was unknowingly meeting the conditions of, Frost needed to know before they violated it, and if the spirits were expecting something in return then they needed to know before the debt grew too great. If only those damned spirits weren't so hard to find.

Frost fought to keep their tail from lashing. They'd discovered a few weeks ago that doing so would only send stardust billowing into the air, and while that was pretty, it was a pain to clean up. Frost had other things they needed to be doing. Carefully, the starspeaker turned and stalked from their den.

As they strode across camp, a dark shape fell into step at their side. Damir. Again, Frost found themself fighting to keep their tail still. Their leader's dark blue eyes bore into their skull.

"Everything okay?" His voice was low. Frost almost scoffed. The only thing he was worried about was what they were up to. He didn't trust them, even though they'd been fully transparent about their past and abilities. Unrefined brute.

"Perfectly fine." Frost made a pleasant smile spread across their face. "Willow just received something interesting from a merchant. I think he may be similar to the other strange loners in the territory."

"I'm still not convinced you're not wrong about them."

If Frost's smile grew any harsher, then Damir was surely too stupid to notice. They smiled as if nothing had happened. "Ah, well, this Wahoo character gave our friend Willow a rather sizeable pile of stardust. Which is..." Frost trailed off expectantly.

Damir scowled.

"...very unusual." Frost continued in his stead, grinning slightly. It was nice to annoy Damir when they could, even if they didn't particularly like it either. Maybe he would get frustrated and leave. "Only otherworldly entities give out stardust, so Wahoo must be some sort of spirit." They were tempted to try it again, but didn't want to push the dark tom any further. "Willow said that Wahoo and Furzetuft smelled similarly as well, so then Furzetuft may be the same sort of spirit that Wahoo is."

"I don't see how that's important."

Frost stopped to stare at Damir with their calm smile plastered across their face. He did the same, face stony. He'd followed them out of camp by now.

"Are you coming with me?" Frost tipped their head to the side. "I assure you, I don't need any protection. I'm more than capable of handling myself."

"I don't trust you." Damir deadpanned. "I want to see what you're up to."

Frost's smile did drop then; if Damir wasn't going to be polite, then they wouldn't either. "Well, you're more than welcome to come along then." Their voice was clipped as they began to walk again. Damir followed without saying a word.

As the two walked in silence, searching for any signs of the strange loners that visited their territory, another molly left camp all by herself. These cats, her... clan, needed more food. It was the least she could do.

it was as if the cornflower blues of the lake had been liquidefied into ambrosia and honeyed wine. the drink of the gods personified into the bleeding watercolors of the sky. each salted shade of azure and lapis seeming almost effervescent as the it bled into colors of the flora and fauna.

but there was incessant ache at the base of damir’s skull… it was a thrill that ravaged the shades of vermillion of his blood. a thrill that materialized in the form of blackened gossamer unfurling across the lakeside the color of greige. it undulated beneath the kiss of a zephyr… and at its movement, he wavered, eyes squinting for a clearer glimpse.

    it was a rogue.
    (a rogue has been spotted!)

in an instant, damir was upon the rogue. the alabaster of his claws adorned the stranger’s skin, drawing vermillion potchmarks as his touch travelled across his throat.
“get off of me, you buffoon!” the rogue sputtered, features contorted into barely concealed confusion.

“what are you doing on lakeclan territory?” his voice was the encapsulation of sheer brutality as his hold tightened around the rogue’s throat.

“i-i was just passing through… i swear!” a barely tangible gasp adorned the rogue’s lips as he thrashed beneath damir.

    “i do not believe you.”

“easy there, damir.” it was only then when an infuriating grin, its familiarity almost startling as a sudden force jerked him backwards… away from the rogue. “let him pass, will you?”

    frost.

“i will certaintly will not-” but when he turned away from frost… the rogue was long gone.

While The Game raged on outside the city, the inhabitants of Elysium were hard at work. Especially a small group of Curan, who were currently being escorted by a pair of young Valor.

"Remind me why we're here?" Lion's Snarl grumbled to Ebony. The dark furred Ironfang rolled her eyes. "Because the higher ups have more important things to do than an escort job." The fact that there were likely several of those "higher ups" stalking this mission was left unsaid. Ebony knew she was too new of a Sargent to be trusted with the Tenderpaw alone. Let alone with a group of Curan.

Sure sure the faction of the healers was far less of a problem in modern times than history had shown. But with a record of "attempting to take over the city" well...the city could hardly be faulted for wanting Curan to be escorted at all times whenever they left their own part of the city.

And even then there were far more Valor stationed within Curan than there was any other sector.

Supposedly, these four were transferring supplies from the greenhouses to a hospital in Jurat. Sure everything they'd done so far had been in line with that mission, but Ebony would be a fool to let her gaze off of them for even a second. The purple one especially. That little heart necklace he still wore, despite the satchel on his back, marked him as an adult transfer. Nearly unheard of. Of course the move would have been transferred on authority of the crown, but the fact that he'd changed his loyalties after being named a full member of Empas was suspicious.Especially given he had transferred to Curan of all factions.

The four in question, with the purple one- Hyacinth, she believed his name was- in the lead, were talking quietly to one another. Hyacinth's little ferret was currently lounging on the back of the caliby- Brightlily- and the two white and gray females- Milquetoast and Stella- kept sharing looks as Hyacinth laughed about something or another.

Ebony wasn't so foolhardy as to try and blatantly eavesdrop. At least not when Lion's Snarl clearly had his ears forward and kept talking several quick-steps to stay closer to the squad. If he heard anything significant, he'd alert her. For now, she was content to watch the city around them. And try to figure out which of her superiors was following them. Maybe she'd get a promotion if she could report them back successfully.
