Prompt:It's been so long now that Dawnshimmer truthfully doesn't remember much of her childhood. The only thing she remembers clearly is the moment that set her down the vibrant, lonely path she walks now.
She had snuck out of camp. She did often, but this time was
different. This time, she had gotten farther than she ever had before. This time, she found a ring of red mushrooms, all alone on the forest floor.
Dawnshimmer had padded towards the mushrooms, nose twitching curiously, when she spotted movement near them. She had immediately crouched down to watch - she remembers thinking that if there was a bird, she could bring it back to the clan and they wouldn't be mad at her. Maybe they'd even make her an apprentice early! Dawnshimmer smiles to remember her childhood naïvety, but smiles more when she remembers what came next.
As Dawnshimmer sat watching, she didn't see birds hopping around the mushrooms, but cats.
Tiny cats- cats smaller than her paw. Dawnshimmer held very still, watching as the little cats milled around the fungi. The longer she watched, the more details she picked out. These cats
lived in the mushrooms; she saw several entering or exiting holes in the mushrooms' stems, and even noticed little holes carved in the caps of the mushrooms so the tiny cats could see outside. They had little gardens around each mushroom, and the tiny cat closest to her was tending to his very diligently.
Dawnshimmer inched closer. He hadn't noticed her yet, engrossed with gardening as he was. What sort of tiny crops did the little cat grow? What was that on- was he wearing a little hat? Dawnshimmer giggled at that, then froze.
The tiny cat froze too.
Slowly, he turned to look at her. Horror was painted on every feature of his face. Dawnshimmer was scared he would run away, but he didn't. She smiled. After a moment, the tiny cat smiled back. He waved his tail at her, beckoning.
Dawnshimmer stood. A second later, jaws met her scruff and she was yanked into the air.
Her father had found her. She got the talking-to of a lifetime, but he had listened when she told him about the tiny cats she found. He and the rest of her clan thought there were abandoned kittens in the forest, and sent patrols out searching. When they found nothing, she got in even
more trouble for lying on top of sneaking out. Nobody believed her, but Dawnshimmer knew what she saw. She knew, and she held it with her all her life until the day her clan tore itself to shreds. On that day, Dawnshimmer limped through the blood-soaked forest until she found a circle of mushrooms like she had so long ago. And there, just inside the circle, a little cat stood waving her closer.
Dawnshimmer never looked back.
