First Prompt

Postby hallowitch » Mon Jun 03, 2024 1:39 am

First prompt: tell me how you came across this wildie at the Carnival

[375 words]

The warm June sun was just peeking up over the carnival tents as Silas strolled through the grounds. It was quiet now, with only the carnival workers and some other riders milling about. He liked it like that, before the townsfolk and the tourists populated the fairgrounds. It was the quiet morning that he'd been counting on to give his wild quarter horse a chance to meet him without the pressure of crowds and onlookers.

He'd lived in Pine Valley is whole life, but finally decided this summer was the year he was ready to gentle a wildie. He'd worked hard in the last few years, halter training colts and riding nicer show horses for his boss, a successful jumper with a passion for teaching young professionals. Truly, it was her idea for Silas to try this.

When he reached the corrals, he took a moment to check in with his body, making sure to take a few deep breaths to relax himself. Horses couldn't tell the difference between anticipation and anxiety, and he didn't want his first impression on his new horse to be spoiled by tension. Then he confidently started down the aisles, hunting for corral #16.

And then suddenly, he was there, looking at a dirt-coated mare laying quietly in the hay. Her wild mane obscured her neck and shoulder, but she had a nice head and neat little ears. He spied some white dotted around her coat, underneath all that mud. It wasn't uncommon for the wildies to be fairly dirty during the carnival, as they frequently took mud bathes to help keep themselves insect-free. It spoke to the intelligence of the breed, so often the dirtiest wildies were the most coveted.

And she was FILTHY.

"Hey Sixteen," he said, approaching the corral bars. The mare swiveled her ears toward him, regarding him with soft eyes. She wasn't too bothered by his presence, not even bothering to stand from her hay bed. He took the carrot from his back pocket, breaking it in half and tossing one half out onto the hay pile. The mare regarded it, sniffing delicately, then reached over and picked it up.

"If you want the other half, you'll have to get up and come get it."

Second Prompt

Second prompt: tell me how you have started to gain their trust and Halter break them

[539 words]

Silas was anxious to get out to the corrals this morning. He rushed through morning chores at his job, apologizing to his boss. She'd laughed and waved him off. He'd dreamed last night about his mare getting her legs stuck in the corral panels. Realistically, he knew that someone was always on the grounds while there were horses there, and he'd have heard by now if there'd been an accident. But that didn't stop his concerns.

After he pulled into the lot where the riders and horse trailers parked, he almost sprinted to the corrals. The only thing keeping him from doing so was the other riders he encountered on the way, some leading horses to and fro for demos and pony rides. Instead, he powerwalked through the barn and out into the corrals.

She was asleep. Again.

No legs through bars, no cuts or scrapes, just perfect and covered in mud. Somehow, she looked even dirtier than before. He could barely spot any white on her today. If this worked out, he knew there was LOTS of purple shampoo in his future.

"Morning, girl," he said, carefully sliding the lock on the corral gate open. She flicked her ears in his direction, letting him know that she heard him but was rather unconcerned. He'd been coming and going like this for a few days now. He thought it might be better to start off slow, let her get used to his presence. Some of the others already were saddling their wildies, but his boss' voice rung in his head, telling him to take it slow.

After he'd refilled her water, Silas took the carrot out of his pocket. Finally, his mare was awake. She looked at the vegetable with interest, and he thought he heard a quiet whicker. He smiled, snapping it in half and holding half out. Today, she decided she was fine getting close to him and took a few confident steps forward, taking the carrot quickly. While she chewed, he slowly reached out and stroked the side of her jaw, which she hadn't minded yesterday and she definitely didn't mind today.

With the other half of the carrot, he lured her a little closer, waiting until he was scratching on her jaw before letting her take it. She seemed unbothered, quietly chewing. Her ears were relaxed, her eyes soft. On a whim, he ran his hand up the side of her head, over her poll and then down her neck. Again, she seemed unfazed.

"Think you want to try a halter today?"

He left the corral, digging through the small plastic tub of supplies he'd brought for a soft, well-maintained leather halter. And, of course, two more carrots. When he re-entered the corral, she was far more interested in the orange veg than the halter. That was good. He held the halter up and offered her half a carrot when she casually sniffed it. Then again when she let him put it loosely over her nose. She was getting bolder after the snacks too, almost verging on pushing too close. Silas laughed and hid the last half of the carrot. To earn that, she'd have to let him put the halter all the way on.

Third Prompt

Postby hallowitch » Mon Jun 03, 2024 3:16 am

Third prompt: tell me how they do first time under saddle and how their grooming went

[865 words]

It was already hot when Silas pulled the trailer into the parking lot. He'd decided to leave it here for a couple nights, in anticipation of being able to take his wildie home after the carnival. So he had taken a little longer to arrive at the grounds this morning, and the sun was already beating down on the corrals. He thought that might actually be a good thing, given what he'd planned to do today.

His mare was awake for once when he arrived, knocking her food pan around the corral. The town hired folks to feed the morning grain to the horses, to prevent overfeeding or tampering. From the looks of it, she'd finished a while ago and was busying herself licking the bottom of the pan.

"Morning!" he said to her. Her head shot up and a loud whicker escaped her mouth. Silas laughed and handed her a piece of carrot through the bars. He'd had to start chopping the carrots into smaller pieces, just to make sure he wasnt going through a bag a day. She wasn't interested in commercial horse treats or apples or sugar cubes, but LOVED carrots.

After he'd refilled her water buckets and brought her some alfalfa, Silas brought a small bucket of tools into the corral. She'd seen it before and had even let him run a soft brush and his hand over basically her whole body, but she hadn't gotten the full experience yet. Today she would. He slipped the halter over her ears and let the lead rope coil onto the ground, as he would be teaching her to ground-tie. As usual, she didn't seem to mind.

He started with a rubber curry comb, first letting her sniff it and then gently introducing it to her shoulder. She didn't seem to mind, as long as he occasionally gave her a piece of carrot, so he started working in gentle, slow circles. She had mud everywhere and he knew he wouldn't get the full effect of her coat until she got a bath, but he was starting to see more of what she looked like. She had beautiful dark golden hair with flecks of white. Her long, dark mane was still tangled and dirty, but he'd take care of that today, at least somewhat.

Overall, she did really well. She didn't love her legs being groomed, but then Silas didn't have his full grooming kit so he only had the regular curry comb. Once he got her home, he'd give her the deluxe grooming experience with the tiny, soft leg-and-face curry he had. He didn't mess with her tail, but he got her forelock and some of the less-tangled parts of her mane cleaned up.

After she was as clean as he'd be able to get her, he offered a couple pieces of carrots, then left to grab a few things from his truck. The small jumping saddle and bridle would hopefully fit her, at least enough to serve his purposes. He brought everything inside and set it against the corral panel, allowing the mare to investigate. She licked the leather of the saddle.

"Alright. If you don't like this, tell me." Carefully, he introduced the saddle pad to her, first letting her sniff it, then rubbing it across her shoulder, then slowly laying it across her back. She stood like a rock. He repeated the process, giving her carrots each time he place it on her back. Then he did something similar with the saddle, slowly lowering it onto her back and then removing it. Again, she didn't seem to mind as long as she got paid in carrots. When he started tightening the girth, slowly, he expected a reaction and got only a flick of the ear.

Then he replaced with halter with a bridle with a soft leather bit. She chewed on the bit some, as if deciding whether it was food or not. Silas took the bridle off and on a few times, giving her a carrot slice each time he removed it. When she was all tacked and unbothered, he led her out of the corral and into the large round pen that had been set up nearby for training. Luckily, no one else was using it and there wasn't many folks hanging around it. Not that he thought his mare would mind.

When he had closed the door to the round pen, Silas took the lead rope off her halter and clucked to her. He had practiced this a few times with no tack so she walked off, going toward the rail of the round pen. He clucked again and gentle swung the rope end of the lead rope and she picked up a hesitant trot. The feeling of something on her back was magnified by the faster pace and she raised her head, unsure. He said a couple of soothing words to her, clucking again, and she seemed to relax a bit. After a few good, relaxed steps of trot, he cooed at her, which was the voice signal for stop. She did, then looked to him for her treat.

"You'll do just about anything for food, huh?"
