Range Trotter #JUN062

Postby coaliev » Tue Jun 25, 2024 6:00 am

Range Trotters are the result of crossbreeding Orlov Trotters, Finnhorses, Welsh Cobs (section C & D) and Hanoverians. Later crosses of Quarter Horses, Paint and Appaloosas to gain color and to give a boost to their hardiness. With a height average of 13-15 hands, they're a hardy breed with characteristics for various disciplines.

Created for use as work, carriage and leisure riding horses originally, they now serve as long-distance range horses, such as work with Park Rangers and mounted officers.

Willing and eager personalities, most are quickly trained to be bombproof and therefore trusted mounts in all lines of work; some are being seen in local show jumping competitions, others are notably used in therapeutic sessions for their calm temperaments. Harness races and endurance trials are common for the breed, as they are able to sustain an extended trot without tire. Cross-Country competitions see some of the taller Trotters, but due to their cob lineage this is still uncommon.

Despite the variety of competitions and work these horses are being seen in, they are still famously skilled as endurance racers. Many competitors have chosen Range Trotters due to their tireless work ethic, as well as the ease in which they can be trained. Many have become champions in endurance trials, and they have quickly become a sought after breed for their natural ability.

Barn Name: Journey
Gender: Stallion
Height: 14 hh
Halter Color: White
Prompt: Journey... had no idea how he got here. Or where "here" even was. If there was an entrance he had passed through, or an exit he could take, he couldn't find either, no matter which way he turned. At first, he hadn't even noticed that something about this place was different. There was grass, and trees, and a river just like in the meadow he's been in earlier. But when he really looked around, really focused on what he was seeing, he noticed things that were ever so slightly...off. The apples were a bit too bright and plentiful. The water was a bit too perfect and clear. And the silence was... unnerving. No bird calls. Not a single chirp of insects. Wind completely still.... nothing but a faint, constant hum in his ears. He flicked them in an attempt to banish it, but the hum only seemed to intensify.

He had two choices. Go forward, and search for clues to this mystery... or stand in one place forever. He swished his tail. He waited. No door appeared magically before him.

Well then. Forward it was.

He trotted over the river and through the field at a steady pace, resisting the urge to bolt instead - unicorns were hardly easy prey for any beast, but he still shared a common ancestor with his equine brethren who were, and all his instincts screamed that fear was a virtue. He wasn't sure how far he walked, or how long. He couldn't know. The sun never seemed to shift from its peak in the sky, even as sweat began to bead and roll from his back. By now, he didn't see any trees left to shade under, either.

Until finally, the scenery shifted. Ahead of him, a forest grew more clear on the horizon, step by step. He quickened his pace - not galloping, not yet; when you didn't know quite what you were up against, you'd best conserve your energy - until he stood at the treeline, peering into the depths, looking for any path that had ever been worn through the scrub. But there were none. He was an explorer in thoroughly uncharted land, and he really didn't want to be. He turned around. He could look somewhere else.

Except there was nowhere else. Where bright flowers and gentle hills once stretched behind me, forest now surrounded him completely. If there was any point during this excursion that justified panicking a bit, this was it.

Journey moved as quickly as he could, weaving through any gap in the thicket big enough for a unicorn. Landmarks blurred together. For all he knew, he was going in circles. When a light appeared through a cluster of trees, he made a snap decision - whatever it was, it was the only distinct thing he could see around him. He was going toward it, not away.

The light grew bigger as he grew closer. A cave? The entrance seemed to shimmer like a pond under moonlight. Somehow, inside it, there were more trees. The hum was louder than ever. He surged in its direction.

And emerged on the other side, in a small clump of apple trees in a meadow, with a river bubbling on in front. His muscles ached with anxiety and exhaustion. He took one step, then another, until he was at the water's edge - and found it slightly cloudy.

He dove his muzzle in, and drank like he hadn't in years. Birds sang around him. Crickets fiddled. The wind buffeted the trees - apples still not entirely ripe. Relief washed over him as he lifted his head once more...

...And saw a single, shimmering crystal on the bank. And when he perked his ears and listened.... he could hear it humming.

Show Name: RRS Ordinary Wonders
Barn Name: Wonder
Gender: Stallion
Height: 12.3 hh
Halter Color: Artist's choice
Prompt:
Wonder found the place where all lost things go.

It's a strange place, cobbled together from bits and pieces of all the places people no longer go. It's cozy, though, comfortably crammed with worn childhood blankets and stuffed animals left behind in the strangest of places. Cast-off furniture protrudes from drifts of misplaced socks, not two of which match. (The furniture or the socks!) A king's ransom in jewelry and coins forms glittering paths that branch out as far as the eye can see. Picture frames crowd the walls, filled with an endlessly-changing procession of every image ever lost to time.

(If you look hard enough, you can find lost cameras and phones among the detritus. Somehow every device works just well enough to reveal the memories it once held.)

More amorphous things live there as well. Secrets shared between friends destined to part ways. Love songs written for the wrong person. Words said in haste that never found the right ear. Tired dreams, tattered hopes, threadbare wishes- they flutter like moths among the ruins, blurry half-images that vanish the moment you try to look more closely.

It's as surreal as it is soothing, just as Wonder himself is.
Be the nonsense you wish to see in the world.

Prompt: They find plants ten times larger than they would be back home. Some they can't even identify. Near a lake they stumble across, they find their are large koi-like creatures that swim down into the water occasionally then swim through the air just as easily. There are also small, glowing goldfish swimming through the air nearby. As a group swims past their mane, it tickles and they can't help but wonder what other strange and interesting creatures are in this land.
