Atrociouskit has been aware.

On some level, he always has been.

But it's... differnet.

When you're face to face with it.

In the depths of his mind, he swims past the image across a large, faintly-glowing stone.

'This is you', his mind whispers softly.

But it's not.

It's not him.

It wasn't him.

It is now.

The details are wrong in ways he can't explain- his white, maybe is in the wrong place. His eyes are the wrong shade of blue. Did he always have no pupils?

His paws brush his forehead. Nothing there.

There's a nagging feeling telling him that something should be.

Perhaps, most of all, he should focus on how he is posed on the screen.

A shudder runs down his spine.

A memory?

No.

His mind is blank of everything but the gentle memory of two loving mothers, and the notion that he received a large act of mercy.

"My name is Atrociouskit."

And he repeats it again until it sounds right.

Until it sounds real.

Until it sounds fake.

Until it sounds very, very wrong.

He isn't sure what he came here for anymore.

He frowns at the pose.

It's familiar.

It's right.

But something is wrong.

And he doesn't know what.

And he repeats it one more time, speaking only to himself, trying to understand.

"Are you finally going to show me, then?" Tidepool flicked their tail, annoyed. Mumblecry had been touting about all day, teasing and hinting that he was going to show them something amazing. They weren't particularly invested - they assumed it was just going to be some sort of weird caterpillar or something - but if he didn't show them soon their head was going to explode with irritation.

Mumblecry flicked his tail, grinning that lopsided grin that was usually reserved for smugly telling the queens exactly how many children they were going to have.

"Yes, yes, follow me." He trotted into the medicine den, stepping around the mess of herbs that were spilling out of it. Tidepool followed, slightly apprehensive.

A dull blue glow was emanating from the corner of the den, Mumblecry's shadow cast to the wall as he leaned over it. He beckoned Tidepool over with his tail.

"Come and see."

Tidepool stepped gingerly around dampened herbs, slipping in beside him to peer over his shoulder.

...They weren't sure what to make of it. It almost looked like... them, but all contorted and wrong.

Mumblecry turned to them, eyes sparkling strangely.

"Don't you see? This is you." He tapped the image with a claw with an odd clink. Tidepool stared.

"You're special," Mumblecry carried on, looking a little too excited. "Most cats, they don't look like this. I've seen others, horrifying creatures, but they're not real. Those cats don't exist! But you." He grinned.

"There's something different about you."

Tidepool wasn't sure what to say. They weren't sure they could say anything if they tried. That was them? That was... real? Or would be, if they wanted an even scarier proposition. They quickly excused themself, heading out for some less-herb-infused air and trying to shake that terrible image from their mind.

But they couldn't, of course. How could they? It would likely stick with them for life, whether it became real or otherwise.
