    How did they become a Medicine Cat / healer

    Rodentpaw lifted her head, her eyes narrowed as she tracked her prey. It was time for her assessment, she was so close to becoming a warrior! Excitement surged through the young she-cat, but she pushed it down. She had to focus.

    Her mentor, Reedshadow, had to be nearby, watching, because Rodentpaw could hear a distant rustling. The noise was quite loud, though she ignored it. A strange scent overlapped the rabbit she was stalking, and she froze in her tracks.

    ”What is-“

    She was cut off abruptly. A massive black and white dog emerged from the bushes in front of her, its maw wet. A low noise erupted from its throat, beady eyes dark with malicious intent. A scar stretched from its eye to the corner of its mouth, and its ears were shredded to pieces. Rodentpaw was frozen still, she couldn’t move. She couldn’t hiss, she couldn’t run, she couldn’t fight back.

    The dog flew at her, grabbing her and shaking her over, and over, and over again. Rodentpaw was severely injured from this attack, leaving her with a broken jaw, mangled ears, and a mangled rear leg. Her destiny had changed due to this unfortunate event, a freak accident that Rodentpaw wished had never happened.

    Nonetheless, she switched mentors. It took her 8 moons to heal, her mood dejected and gloomy. Yet, her new mentor was patient and willful, teaching Rodentpool everything she knows today and giving her hope for the future. Rodentpool loves her role, nothing is more rewarding than healing. Though sometimes, the thought of things being different lurks in the back of her mind.

    Her jaw never healed properly, and her fur is still littered with scars that remind her of what happened. But she still perseveres and tries her very best.

How did they become a Medicine Cat / healer

she was falling. wait. no. she was dreaming. what-
…was that…another cat?

“wait! don’t run away! I need help? where am I?”
the cat turned back to her. now rodent could see it
clearly. the cat’s fur was a glossy white, the pure
white of stars, the moon, the ethereal.

rodent. you have been chosen.

“what…for what?”

you are destined to become a dreamwalker. you
have been chosen by the stars.

“but I’m a nixie! and I’m going to become a forager!”
she cried in protest. “I don’t want to talk to ghosts
or heal!”

i’m sorry, but you don’t have much choice.

the voice echoed through her ears.
rodent didn’t believe them.

but in her heart, she had a tiny feeling
she really didn’t have a choice.

rodent continued her training
for a while, unbothered by any weird
ghosts or spooky voices.

until the day.

she was hiding in a large
berry bush. well…a dream
bush.

“not another dream..” rodent
groaned, pawing the soil
in annoyance.

wait. was that..another cat?

rodent made a small hole in the
leaves and peeped out to get
a look at the source of the sound.

wait..that familiar red fur.

abyss?!
rodent called out to the distant figure of a cat.

she pushed her way out of the bush
and silently crept to follow the aether.

hmm…alright. he seems to be dreaming
about some sort of forest.
rodent thought,
examining the trees around her.

but why? how am I in his dream?
the nixie thought to herself.

the same pale white fur suddenly materialised
right next to her.

because you can walk in dreams, rodent.
that is why you were destined to end up a dreamwalker
anyway.

“WHAT? not you again! but..but…I wanted to be a
forager! i promised!” rodent yowled, her face
starting to contort with rage.

we’re sorry. but the stars had other plans
for you. unfortunately…your life is going to be
very crazy. my apologies.

the spirit said sympathetically, fur starting
to glow even brighter.

“what do you mean? why?! I want to live a
normal life! TELL ME EVERYTHING!” rodent
snarled, bushing out her fur.

you’ll just have to see later in life.

————-

“what…I really have to do this?”
rodent’s eyes were filled with disappointment.

“yes, rodent. I’m sorry. but if you keep
in having these dreams, and now that
the current dreamwalker’ just died,
you’ll have to take on their job.”

abyss sighed regretfully.

“besides, without a tail, how will you
be able to balance properly? your wounds from
the bear are too great.”

that was it.

it wasn’t only because of her visions.

it was because rodent was too useless
to become a forager any more.

she considered lashing out, considered yelling
at abyss.
but no. she didn’t. that only ends in pain.

so rodent, reluctantly, took on the job
of dreamwalker. she still feels upset at
abyss about how he switched her rank,
and she sometimes regrets staying silent.

due to the incident with the bear, resulting
in her injuries and the loss of her tail,
she didn’t exactly have a choice.

after all, nobody is supposed to question
the aether themselves.

now she knew what that spirit meant.

the visions and walking in cats’ dreams
give her such huge headaches, despite
her knowing how to heal.

sigh.

rodent really needs to yell at something
now.

How did they become a Medicine Cat / healer

Rodentpool was never skilled at caring for other cats. She never wanted to, either; she was perfectly happy being a fierce warrior of her clan. However, there's a reason she took the healing path. Rodentpool is a middle child, her parents having two other litters of one kit each. She had an older brother named Hollowpit, and a younger sibling named Ghostkit. Her parents died shortly after having Ghostkit, when she was but a young warrior. Her older brother, Hollowpit, had always been sickly. He was in no condition to care for the young kit. So, Rodentpool had to step up to the job of caring for her family, despite never imaging herself as a caretaker.

However, shortly after Ghostpaw became an apprentice, they disappeared. No-one in the clan knew the circumstances, but tufts of their fur were found near the border... it was assumed that her little sibling wandered out of camp, and was killed by a wild animal. Rodentpool was crushed. The kit she raised as her own had been taken from her. Miserable, she only got through those times with Hollowpit's support.

However, as Hollowpit's condition worsened, she decided she had to preserve the only family she had left. She begged to retire from her warrior duties, and become a permanent caretaker for her brother and her clan. She didn't want to lose her brother if she could do something about it.

She still isn't a skilled medicine cat, but she is trying. Thanks to her care, Hollowpit, although now unable to perform warrior duties, is well taken care of. Despite being a medicine cat, she often still hunts, bringing back the best prey for her brother. She remembers all he did for her when she was young, and how he supported her when she lost Ghostpaw, and she doesn't intend to abandon him anytime soon. So, despite the difficulties, she is determined to continue being a medicine cat... even if she has to leave behind the warrior life she loved so much.

How did they become a Medicine Cat / healer

It was early morning, the sun shimmered through the thick leaves above and seemed to dance along the forest floor. Curious eyes watched the sun's movements, a young cat steadied herself and crouched...focusing in on her target as she sprung up from her position and leaped onto the dancing sunlight. She giggled and pawed at the shapes beneath her as she took a moment and looked up to see where the rays were coming from. She squinted and could see the small rays of sunlight as they made their way through the gaps of the leaves.
Rodentpaw sighed contently, everything seemed so perfect on this morning. As she turned her focus away from the dancing sunlight, the sounds of her clanmates echoed around her ears. She was snapped out of her daze as an older warrior approached her, she meowed in a soft and friendly tone.

"Good morning, Rodentpaw..." She said with a smile. "...ready for morning patrol?"

"Good morning Toadslip!" Rodentpaw mewed in return, a smile on her face as she stretched and stood up onto her paws. "I'm so ready!! When do we go?" Excitement in her voice, this was her first time going outside the camp!

Toadslip chuckled, she purred at her apprentice's eargerness to get the day started. "Very soon, we're just waiting on Flyfleck and Cherrypaw, then we'll be on our way." She began to walk towards the entrance to their camp, Rodentpaw quickly followed after her with a skip in her step.
"Oh good!! It'll be nice to see Cherrypaw again!" She beamed, Cherrypaw had been pretty focused in her warrior training as she was a few moons older than Rodentpaw.

Not long after, Flyfleck and Cherrypaw arrived at the entrance. After the two pairs greeted each other and discussed their patrol plans, they set off into the woodlands that surrounded their camp. The air was crisp and smelled strongly of oak, leaves slowly began to fall from the branches they held onto as Leaf-fall was approaching. Soon the ground would be covered in leaves of all different shades of red, orange, yellow, and even brown. Rodentpaw kept pace with the group as they followed their territory borders, but she really wanted to explore...she had never been outside of camp before! Now here she was...the temptation to wander off into the unknown was strong.

A few minutes into the patrol, the group had stopped by a small stream to get a drink. Rodentpaw and Cherrypaw were both wandering around not too far away from their mentors. Rodentpaw was chasing a few leaves that were floating along the ground as the wind pushed them.

"Hey Cherrypaw!! Come here, these leaves are fun to chase!" Rodentpaw mewed, as Cherrypaw made her way to her friend. She crouched and quickly pounced onto a leaf that was a few paw steps from them. Rodentpaw was amazed.
"Whooaa...that was so awesome!!" She smiled. Cherrypaw smiled back at her, still holding the leaf tightly under her paw.
"Soon you'll be learning all this training too, it's lots of fun!" Cherrypaw mewed happily. The pair continued to play and pounce on the leaves, unknowingly drifting further and further away from their mentors who hadn't yet noticed how far their apprentices were getting from them.

The two cats were now in a clearing, barely any trees covered them from the bright sun that shown down on them. They both took a break from leaf chasing and stood in the warm rays. Rodentpaw always wondered why the rays of sunlight felt so good, they were so warm and calming...one of the best feelings in the world.

That is when it all changed, the calm stillness suddenly turned terrifying and loud.

Within seconds, a massive hawk descended onto the pair of cats. Its talons gripping tightly onto Rodentpaw's back as she let out a shriek of surprise and pain. She twisted and turned and tried to land a blow to the hawk, she let out a cry.
"Cherrypaw help!" She turned her gaze towards the hawk's. It's bright orange eyes met her own gaze as it screeched, its grip tightening as she let out a hiss. Cherrypaw leaped onto the hawk's back and struggled to get it off of Rodentpaw.
"Let...her...go!!" She yowled, biting at the hawk but only ended up biting off a clump of thick and soft feathers. The hawk flapped its wings in attempt to shake off its attacker but to no avail. Cherrypaw wasn't going to let go.

It was the quick arrival of their mentors that terrified the hawk, as the experienced warriors circled the hawk it began to panic. While it was quite a large raptor, it was still just a juvenile. In fear, it released its talons from Rodentpaw and knocked Cherrypaw off its back before taking flight into the sky and disappearing. Rodentpaw's vision faded in and out, she only felt the sudden relief of being let go and seeing a faint glimpse of the hawk flying into a blurry blue sky. Voices called her name around her, but she couldn't make out their words...her world went black as she fell unconscious.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rodentpaw's eyes fluttered open, her head throbbed and her entire body ached. She groaned as the pain from her wound made itself known, it slowly came back to her...she had been attacked by a hawk. She laid in the nest and tried to fall back asleep...in her sleep she wasn't in any pain. She was only stirred back awake as a pair of paws set down a moss clump in front of her. A voice spoke up softly, yet concerned.
"Rodentpaw? Are you awake?" The voice called to her. Rodentpaw could only manage a groan in reply.
"Oh, thank Starclan," Relief filled the voice as she nudged the wet moss to Rodentpaw's paws. "I'm Snailwatcher, I'll be looking over you as you recover." She purred softly, Rodentpaw slowly drank the water from the moss. It was cool and refreshing, it momentarily distracted her from the pain she was feeling.
"If you ever need anything at all, let me know...if you can't get me, my apprentice won't be far away." She looked up and met Snailwatcher's eyes.
"Thank you..." She mewed hoarsely, Snailwatcher smiled to her and nodded her head. She continued to go about her medicine cat duties, quietly mumbling to herself about a few herbs Rodentpaw had never heard of before...it was nice to listen to she admitted, it gave her mind something to focus on. A calm came over her as she slowly drifted off to sleep once again. She felt safe.
While being confined to the medicine den, Rodentpaw wasn't able to continue her warrior training as usual. Her mentor and peers didn't know if she would ever be able to become a warrior due to how recent she got her injury...only time would tell.
After a few moons, Rodentpaw was healed enough to attempt her training again, but sounds from the tree tops and rustling above her head caused her to go into a panic. She was terrified of the thought of being attacked by a raptor again, this made continuing her training almost impossible...Rodentpaw was disappointed, as she was escorted back to the medicine den that night with her mentor. Toadslip spoke up.
"Maybe warrior training isn't what Starclan planned for you..." she spoke in a soft tone, "...maybe they have something even better in mind."
"What do you mean?" Rodentpaw asked.
"Well...everything happens for a reason, or so I've heard...maybe this experience will show you the path your destined to go down."
Rodentpaw listened to her mentor's words, they hit deep. She responded with a gentle nod. The pair bid each other goodnight as Toadslip made her way to the warriors' den. Rodentpaw settled down in her nest inside the medicine den. Toadslip's words echoed in her mind...maybe she was destined for something else, she hoped her mentor's words were true.
Although, while she recovered in the medicine den, she became good friends with Snailwatcher and her apprentice, Sagepaw. She spent a lot of her time learning about all the varieties of herbs they can use, what they are used for, and even the plants that they should avoid. This new knowledge became Rodentpaw's new interest, she a found a new goal for her life...she wanted to become a medicine cat.
No, she would become a medicine cat...she planned to do anything and everything it took to fulfil this dream!
And after moons and moons of training, she was made a medicine cat.
And given her new name, Rodentpool.
"I have been growing old with each moon. My paws have been working harder and harder to hold herbs. It's time I take on an apprentice to pass my knowledge before I find myself in StarClan," the medicine cat's booming voice echoed throughout the rocky cliffs. "Rodentpaw, you have reached the age of six moons old and you are ready to follow my pawsteps into the path of a medicine cat."
The medicine cat hopped down from the large rock, her fur shining in the sunlight. This wasn't what Rodentpaw wanted, Serpentstar* promised she would become a warrior under Harestalk's* mentorship! The medicine cat, Reedwhisker*, craned her neck and closed her eyes. She glared up at Serpentstar who sat on the Meetingrock. Such betrayal could not be forgiven.
Hesitantly, the newly-made apprentice touched her pale pink nose against Reedwhisker's. The Clan shouted her name, cheering for her louder than ever. She would be the first medicine cat apprentice since the Clan's creation. After the ceremony, she scrabbled up the rock and into the leader's den, her claws creating white scratch marks on the very front of the jagged rock.
"Serpentstar, you promised to make me a warrior. You said yourself that Harestalk will be my mentor! Why did you change that?" she growled. The leader's eyes glowed in frustration. "Don't question me, and don't talk to me like that. I have my own reasons. You should go back to the medicine den and start learning. Go," they hissed back. Tail lashing, she had nothing left to do but follow their orders.
"Sorry for the sudden change. I know how much you wanted to be a warrior apprentice, but trust me. StarClan wanted this," Reedwhisker immediately mewed when she walked into the medicine den. The walls were smooth, and the entrance's rock was jagged just like the other den entrances. There were ledges carved into the far side, and drawings of StarClan and herbs were all along the wall closest to her.
She didn't want this. She didn't want to be a medicine cat. It was her destiny to be a warrior, right? "StarClan had sent me a sign. A very clear sign!" They beckoned with their tail for the young apprentice to come closer. There was a pile of roots and leaves, and the occasional cobweb or berry dotted within the pile. Reedwhisker pushed a few leaves around, revealing a black and white mouse. It looked similar to Rodentpaw. But this couldn't be... Was her dream of becoming the best warrior meant to be crushed by healing and herbs?
"O-oh wonderful. I should start collecting herbs already..." she mumbled, trying to get out of the medicine den and away from StarClan's sign. Reedwhisker's eyes lit up. "Great idea! I'll come with you and show you all the best spots!"
As they traveled through a sparse prarie, she could smell an intense scent of prey, very similar to the scent of the mice she ate in the fresh-kill pile. It was so close by... She was sure her mentor wouldn't mind if she snuck off just to at least feel like a warrior. An idea popped into her head. She could train as a warrior in secret, and then when she was the best warrior ever she could show Serpentstar that she was worthy! She could do it!
Sneaking through the through the tall, yellow-brown weeds, she found herself behind with a very small mouse. She had no idea how to hunt... She realized her plan would be harder to do than she thought. That's fine, she would just train harder. She snuck through, but the mouse looked her directly in the eyes.
How? How did it notice I was there? she thought. She realized it must've smelled her. It must've looked up and saw her large eyes waiting. Her tail must've rustled the bushes. There were countless things she could've done wrong. The mouse scurried away, and so she gave chase. She could hear her mentor yowling for her.
"Rodentpaw! What in StarClan are you doing?! Herbs don't run off! Get back here! Stop!" But she didn't stop. She kept chasing the mouse, tiring herself out. Okay, so her mentor might have noticed. Surely they wouldn't scold her, or tell the leader she wasn't focusing on her duties. After a few minutes of running, she felt herself tiring out. She had never run so much, she was always cooped up in the nursery.
She lost sight of the mouse, but caught an even more unique scent. It didn't smell like another cat, but it didn't smell like prey either. She lifted her head above the grass, and realized she made a big mistake.
Peering around a tree, a large, vibrant orange head with beady black eyes was facing her. Those beads were piercing her very soul. It was terrifying to see the large fangs that it was baring. With a swift leap and a loud yap, the fox leapt onto her. The next few moments were a blur, and she woke up in the medicine den.
There was a terrible pain in her tail. She couldn't feel her tail, but she felt that it did hurt VERY bad. "Rodentpaw, oh Rodentpaw I'm so glad you're alive. Don't ever leave my sight again! You were destined to be a medicine cat, not a warrior!" Reedwhisker lectured. They wrapped their paws around her shoulders and pulled her in for a hug.
She noticed she had clumps of cobwebs all around her back leg and tail. She didn't want this, she didn't need this. Did StarClan punish her? Why? Why would they hurt one of their own all because of a path she wanted to take? She didn't know, but she knew that Reedwhisker would keep an extra close eye on her for quite a few moons. She sighed, and closed her eyes, drifting back into sleep to avoid the pain.
ClOSED. And after reading ALL the amazing stories and reasons, I have decided that this one would be the winner.
They were ALL really great stories though!
