The universe is beautiful and seemingly endless. The blankets of black gently encapsulates everything with decorations of stars and planets that dot the plains. Yet sometimes a rogue comet slices through space too quickly and leaves a tear in the fabric. Tired yet, a sun may metamorphosize into a black hole, tired of giving and developing an insatiable desire to take. Castillo steps in to neatly stitch up the universes and prevent the rips from growing larger. A seamstress in the simplest sense. Across the universe, she soars alongside solar winds to evaluate the state of space.

She remembers the first patches being large and clumsy. They covered the hole, but it was embarrassing to see such happenstance work because she couldn’t do better. Yet, it happened to be the best work because there was no one else to compare to. No one to teach her.

It is irresponsible to purposefully rip holes in the universe, but she would wait with eyes gleaming in the hopes that she could improve her skills. The needle and thread glimmers with crushed stardust and holds even when she thumbs the rip to hide the ragged edges. Clean sewing makes her proud, but it causes her to idle too long between rips. Sometimes Castillo takes to embroidering designs to close the gaps instead. The needle seamlessly passes through the plains with her thoughts in order where swirls, eyes, and little chicoon heads appear with sparkling clarity. They add dimension and company to the spaces she floats through.


i. Forgotten Responsibilities
If you ask a planet why it spins, can it ever really answer? If you ask a storm why it rains diamonds, can it truly justify why? It was how Castillo felt when she contemplated why she needed to fix these rips to begin with. A nebulous memory took her away and it wanted the chaos to be contained, she happened to be the convenient solution to capture it.

Like all cogs in machines that wear down with time, she simply gave up. She was handed the role rather suddenly, if no one else would do this job then won’t it have to be her? Yet for what reason? Castillo swam through the stars and waited until she saw a rip, then simply waited.

It felt like the planets revolved around their posts countless times before the rip grew- and grew dramatically. Castillo was not yet moved to fix the rip even as a plant fell into it. Stranger yet, tiny scratches formed around the progenitor and fractured out. It was a sight that she was unmoved by. Her ears fluttered though, she heard something in the distance and took off to search for it. Nothing seemed to be making a sound until she approached the rip. Castillo heard frantic shouting and screaming as she peered closer.

“The sky is falling!” A small voice shrilly repeated over and over. It was white with feathers all over.

Oh! Castillo has never seen such a small creature, such a distressed creature! The thinning fabric must be so scary for one so tiny. Castillo gathered up her supplies and deftly closed the largest rip first. She has never done so before, but she sticks her arm into the gap and roots around for the planet that got devoured and sets it right. She sets all her attention on the large rip, it must be fixed so it does not cause more snags. The rest were closed with great focus to prevent any further fraying universes.

Small creature, I hope you are okay now!

Castillo thinks about it every once in a while. It is a small task to her but clearly monumental to others.

ii. Glimpse into the other sides
After the enlightening experiment observing the rips, Castillo wondered what could be beyond the veil that she works behind.

She did not realize that those little voices could be so loud nor did she understand how their worlds worked. The next tear presented an opportunity, Castillo tried to focus her eye into the rip. There were creatures walking around no bigger than a hair, living in buildings only slightly larger. The buildings were laid out in dizzying mazes and the creatures travelled around in shells that let them whiz between the gaps. What an enchanting different life.

Castillo pulled back and neatly sewed up the rip, then flitted to the next. This time, the world was bubbly and blue. They cut through the water with furious flaps of their tails but the colourful rocks they hide behind seem worth it to make such an effort to swim to them. A large shadowy mass moves over head and drops pellets in! Oh! All the creatures have come out of hiding to marvel and eat them. How utterly terrific! Castillo closed this world with little ripple stitches.

The last world she peered into showed everyone draped in long cloths. They brushed the ground as everyone twirled in pairs. They spun tethered by each other’s gravities around a hall that with lights that seemed dripping with stars.

This hole was large enough to stick her head in, but the world wasn’t content and pulled her fully in. When she woke up again, she was dressed like the others with a sparkling black dress and was presented the hand of someone who was dressed in blue fabrics to ask for a dance. Castillo didn’t know what came over her but she suddenly felt emboldened to take his hand and stepped onto the dance floor. The music drifting and carrying the whims of the crowd in circles. It was like she knew the steps to each song that passed.
