the person who instantly came to mind for this prompt was my brother, dan. he's thirteen years my senior, and has always been my number one supporter and advocate. i'm not sure where i'd be without him, honestly. he was the first person to understand my mental health issues, and poured all his energy into making sure i was okay and ensuring the rest of our family understood. he was the first person who got an inkling i wasn't straight. and while my family weren't homophobic, they were all straight and could be ignorant and say things that hurt without that being their intent. to make up for it, my brother would always make sure i knew it was okay to be lgbtq+ in his own way; by gently teasing he'd never know who i'd end up with in the future. when i did come out, i didn't come out to him. because i thought he already Knew. there was much crying that day - he thought i was afraid to come out to him, i thought i didn't have to because i thought he already knew because of how much reassurance he'd given me over the years. when i was nervous to go to a local lgbtq+ meeting, he came with me, and was more than willing to help it get off the ground as an ally as he didn't want anyone else to feel as alone as i had as a teenager. this year has been very hard on me, after being broken up with. and my brother has made so much time to make sure i'm okay and not alone. he's the best in the world and i love him so much.
