Range Trotter #3048

Postby Embergleam » Wed Jan 11, 2023 3:27 pm

Range Trotters are the result of crossbreeding Orlov Trotters, Finnhorses, Welsh Cobs (section C & D) and Hanoverians. Later crosses of Quarter Horses, Paint and Appaloosas to gain color and to give a boost to their hardiness. With a height average of 13-15 hands, they're a hardy breed with characteristics for various disciplines.

Created for use as work, carriage and leisure riding horses originally, they now serve as long-distance range horses, such as work with Park Rangers and mounted officers.

Willing and eager personalities, most are quickly trained to be bombproof and therefore trusted mounts in all lines of work; some are being seen in local show jumping competitions, others are notably used in therapeutic sessions for their calm temperaments. Harness races and endurance trials are common for the breed, as they are able to sustain an extended trot without tire. Cross-Country competitions see some of the taller Trotters, but due to their cob lineage this is still uncommon.

Despite the variety of competitions and work these horses are being seen in, they are still famously skilled as endurance racers. Many competitors have chosen Range Trotters due to their tireless work ethic, as well as the ease in which they can be trained. Many have become champions in endurance trials, and they have quickly become a sought after breed for their natural ability.

Last in the series is cat-trotter eight, loosely based on my beloved childhood cat, a brown tabby!

As with the previous brindle trotter, you can only win one of the two brindle trotters. Both brindle and brindle dun are limited genes, so I want to keep things fair!

To win this trotter, tell me a story about a cat! This can be a fictional story, a real-life one, something about your pet, whatever story you'd like to tell. Don't worry about word limits, you can use as many or as few words as you'd like. My favorite story wins!

Prompt: I'm going to tell the story of my first cat. She is a white and gray cat (with darker stripes on her gray areas) and her name is Rosa. We don't know her breed since my dad found her on the street. He was walking out of work with his friend one day and when he went to his car he could hear little meows. He immediately thought he had a cat inside the hood of the car since that has happened before but after searching for a little bit he saw that she was behind one of the car's wheels. My dad picked her up and looked around to see if he could find a momma cat but nothing to which his friend proceeds telling him to just throw the cat into the bushes behind the location of their work. Mind you, she was so tiny that she fit into my dad's hand. My dad obviously didn't listen to his friend and grabbed a box instead so he could bring the kitten home. We gave her everything she needed, I still remembered that she looked more gray than white since she was so dirty. Now she is around 5 years old, loves to take naps in the sun and will bother you for treats everytime you go to the kitchen. She is friends with my dog and my younger cat (that is my little princess but dont tell the others about that :silent: )So now it's Rosa, Fred and Rita giving some life and amusement to the house.

Prompt: This trotter is named after one of my cats, Felix! Felix actually shares a likeness with this trotter, with his dark fur, black stripes, white paws, and green eyes - he even has the lighter underbelly too! My sweet boy is ~7 years old and was adopted from a rescue group during a very busy adoption event with hundreds of cats, dogs, rabbits, and more. We wanted a playmate for our other cat, Moki (a kitten at the time), so we were looking for a kitten who would fit in well. My family and I wandered the event for a long time before my dad and sister pointed at a certain crate and said, "Look at this one's spotted belly!".

The volunteer placed this big tabby kitten in my arms and I knew I wouldn't leave without him. For context, I had been begging my parents for a cat for years, but they were still grieving the loss of our 2 old cats who had passed years before (they lived very long and happy lives, don't worry). I had held many kittens and begged and cried to them and been denied every single time. It was a miracle that we took Moki home, but we didn't want him to grow up lonely.

I quietly held that little cat for over 2 hours, and he didn't budge an inch even with large dogs walking nearby. My family looked at other kittens, met a few, told me about them, but this boy... I loved him immediately. My parents must have finally seen that I was meant to have this cat, because they finally said yes! The adoption almost fell through when the rescue told us he hadn't been tested for FIV yet (we couldn't bring an FIV+ cat into a home with a healthy cat). They rushed him to a clinic nearby and... he was negative!!! 7-8 years later and he's my absolute best friend and has saved me countless times. I am so beyond glad that we met him that day. I will love him til the end of time.

Prompt: My school's cat, whom I cannot name else I risk doxxing myself, but his name is similar to the barn name I've given this horse. The cat himself is basically a celebrity, when students from other schools come over they would definitely pay him a visit as well. He knows some tricks such as shaking paws (hands?), but most of the time he likes loafing all over the study area tables or sleeping. He is very obese in cat standards due to how much he eats and how little he exercises. All in all, a very good boy and emotional support cat.
Pictures: loafing; eating; sleeping
All credited to me.

When I was very young, in just first grade (I still remember this occasion, despite being so long ago), I was in my elementary school's play. I had one of the lead roles, Rapunzel. I was so excited to get to the play and start practicing before the big show that I begged my mom to drive me to the school early so I could get there quicker. She (albeit begrudgingly) agreed.
When we got to my school we parked a bit down the road from it, on the side of a street in front of a house. The school may not have had enough parking spaces open or no parking at all, I'm not quite sure. All I know is that when we got out of the car, I heard something.
It sounded like mewling, frantic and fearful. I told my mom and at first she didn't hear but when it started up again, she did.
We searched for the owner of the small, feeble, voice but found nothing. We didn't want to trespass onto the property since it wasn't our house, but the way the dogs in the backyard were barking their heads off told us it was probably somewhere on their front lawn.
I followed the sound all around the yard- and to the car parked in the driveway. I called my mom over and she looked beneath the car. Lo and behold there, inside the engine, was a small kitten.
My mom managed to get the kitten out after some struggle, not wanting to just leave it there where it could potentially die. It was all alone and no mother or other kitten was anywhere to be seen, so we assumed it had been abandoned.
When my mother came back out, holding a tiny black kitten in her arms, she too was covered in black. Worse yet, she was- and still is- allergic to cats.
We bundled the poor little thing up in a blanket we had in the car and set it in a box that we poked air holes into so it could be safe. My mother even ran over to a corner store and brought back a few cans of cat food. We would come back to it when we got back from my play.
When we did, the little kitten had scarfed up all the food. We ran it back home and gave it a bath and miraculously, it wasn't a black cat at all. It was a tabby, similar to this trotter. We kept it in the garage with a dog bed left over from one of our old dogs, some food, and a place it could use the bathroom if needed. I visited it just once to give it its food but other than that my parents didn't let me see it since they didn't want me getting attached.
The next morning we called a local no-kill shelter and brought the kitten to them, who I had nicknamed Sooty.

Wherever Sooty is now, I hope he has a loving home with owners who pamper him as much as he deserves. I'll never forget the little guy.

This is the story of Randy, a cat owned by a family a few houses down the street from me. I first saw Randy on the morning of my ACTs, it was a cold February morning with a thick layer of frost on the grass. There are occasionally cats that wander through our yard, some are feral though most are just cats that their owners let outside. Randy was the later, but was very skittish and ran as soon as I approached. Sighing, I went back inside to finish preparations, but I didn't forget about that cat for a minute. I would win it's trust. I saw Randy a few more times in the next couple months, but he wouldn't let me get close. Finally, the moment arrived. I was already outside, and Randy came into the yard. We both saw each other, but I used my cat entrapment skills and pointedly ignored him. He slowly became curious about what I was doing (just poking through the grass really) and he walked up to me. I reached out and let him smell me, and I was able to pet him.

After that, I think he adopted us as his own because he was in our yard constantly. (The owners had kids, so I think he also appreciated our calm and peaceful space). We had lawn chairs for eating lunch or lounging on, and Randy would come over and beg to be let onto the chair. I would let him and my mom wasn't very happy about that, but he was a very sweet cat and just firm in his desire for affection and company. There were many days where we would hear very loud meowing coming from outside, and there he was, staring up at our door waiting for someone to come play with him.

Oh, I haven't described him yet! Randy was a medium grey with semi-longish fur. I think he suffered from a stroke or something because his right ear drooped, his right eye didn't close fully, and he had a permanent snaggle tooth. Regardless of his problems, he loved to play and even liked belly rubs! I would come home from school, sit down on the porch, and Randy would run over and start playing or cuddling. He loved my dad a lot because my dad would practically give him massages! He never had a collar on, so we only learned his name was Randy when he was over playing with us and his owners tried to call him back in...it didn't work so we went inside to get him to go back home, haha. I have some suspicion that they knew he was in our yard after that.

One winter, we saw that family throwing out a cat tree, and came to realize we hadn't seen Randy in a while. That was the end of it, but I will always keep his photo on my phone. I hope one day I'll own a cat that is as sweet and goofy as Randy was.
