“Kenny? who’s that?” A small kit asked, tail twitching eagerly. It was the annual bonfire of the Fortune clan and a small clump of simas were listening eagerly when story time had started. “You mean you’ve never heard of Kenny? He’s a local legand! Okay, sit down and I’ll tell you the story of Kenny.” A green sima said, smiling widely at the dark kit. “So, it was a dark morning, not yet dawn, and I was walking the forest to search for herbs. Taro was having a bad day and I was in a hurry to bring the herbs, and in my haste, took a wrong turn. I was lost. Naturally I had a bit of a panic at first, while I tried to figure out where I’d gone, but no matter how I tried, somehow I couldn’t remember. It was strange. I’d been in that forest many times and yet somehow I didn’t know where I was. It was a real mystery. How had I gotten there? How would I get back? And things were only about to get stranger…” the green sima trailed off, holding his glowing jewel infront of his face. “Awww Uncle Sal, don’t stop. We wanna hear the rest!” The kit cried, jumping playfully on the older sima and tackling him while the others ran to join in. “Oof, you little brats, get off, my old bones can’t take it.” He said playfully, poking the kits gently. “Hop on back to your seats and I’ll finish the story. Okay?” He implored the kits before nudging them gently back to their seats, a white sima laughing gleefully in the background. “Ahem, if you don’t mind Taro, I’d like to finish the story now…” The white sima stopped laughing but his green eyes continued to gleam playfully. “Okay so there I was, lost as a newborn duck and twice as confused. I could see the sun was starting to peak over the trees, Dawn would be here soon and by then the herbs wouldn’t be good anymore; they had a very limited shelf life. I eventually decided to just start walking and hope for the best, after all, I had to pop out somewhere and the forest wasn’t that big….. or so I thought. I must have spent hours trying to find my way out but to no avail, I never seemed to get anywhere. Then the noises started. They were soft at first, a sort of wheezing sound, but grew steadily as the sun rose. By this point I was beyond freaked out, and resigned to needing new herbs since they had to have lost potency by this point. I was also getting quite hungry. That’s when it happened. A flash of something raced past me, a gleaming yellow the only thing I could clearly make out. And…was that a banana? Whatever had just raced past seemed to have food on them, so I decided to follow and hope for the best. What could possibly go wrong? Everything.” The green sima trailed off again, looking at the dark kit gently. “You know….I shouldn’t say everything. After all, that was the day we got you my dear nephew. I can never be grateful enough for that.” He purred, nuzzling the kit as it purred, flopping happily over the older sima’s paws. “Uncle Sal….you said I was found in a cave? How did you get from a forest to a cave? Uncle Taro said there aren’t any caves here.” The dark kit looked up curiously, wondering how this story would involve him. “You’re absolutely right Tobi, there aren’t any caves. So…would you like to hear the rest? It might be a little scary for you?” The green sima asked gently, eyes intent. “Uncle Sal I’m a big boy how, you can’t scare me!” The dark kit cried, looking eager. “Okay then, let’s continue. So there I was, hungry, tired and frankly starting to lose my patience. I had a sick partner back home waiting for these herbs and my memory seemed to be broken somehow. It was becoming a real annoyance that I couldn’t find the way out. I stopped thinking and acted recklessly, following the figure that had darted past. There were many twists and turns, I tripped several times and it didn’t leave any footprints. The only way I knew I was on the right path is the flashes of yellow I’d occasionally see before me. And then it happened. I was exhausted, tired of this cat and mouse chase and ready to just spend the night in the forest. The sun had set hours ago and even with my jewel lit, I could hardly see. I stumbled blindly, still trying to follow the figure when I felt my paws hit rock. I froze, raising my jewel to take in the surroundings. It was a small cave, and in the center laid a newborn kit. I was shocked. There were no caves in this forest and certainly no other simas, but yet here I was, in a cave and with a kit infront of me. But…how? Where had it come from? I had so many questions, but in the end, I decided to simply curl around the kit and fall asleep. We’d deal with this in the morning. And so we slept. Morning came and I awoke, the cave was gone. I was in the grass near my house, herbs and kit both beside me. “Take care of him. You are worthy.” A voice echoed around me, as a cold wind blew. I stood quickly after that and ran inside, kit in tow, and tried to explain to my mate what happened. Taro was confused and said that I’d been away for less than an hour. How was that possible? I never did figure out what happened that day, but the kit did have a note I found later, tied to his tail. It contained few words. ‘Care for him. I am watching, Love Kenny.’”
