    Username: coffee.berry
    Cat Name: Hreindýr
    Gender: Male
    Rank: Head Patroller
    Clan: Peaceclan
    Age: 29 moons
    Prompt:

    [ 800 / 800 ] words

Hreindýr's greatest wish was to meet a reindeer. His mother had told him stories
of them when he was a young kit in Iceland ━ how she'd met them, ridden on
them. He'd thought it was strange for cats and reindeer, such different species,
to form a bond. But it happened. His mother's best friend was a reindeer.

She'd promised him that she would let him meet them, too. But she had left the
earth because of a owl before he got the chance. A twoleg found him, lost and
alone, and brought him onto what the twolegs called a 'ship'. He was taken to a
twoleg den near Peaceclan camp, but he escaped and joined the clan.

He missed his mother every single day ━ he would fulfill her wish (which was his
wish, too) to let Hreindýr meet a reindeer. So, when Silverstar, the leader of his
new clan, assigned him the role 'Head Patroller' (kind of like a manager of patrols
as well as the 'leader' of patrols) he was overjoyed.

On each patrol he goes on by himself, he tries to find reindeer. He brings his plush
reindeer, Prancer, with him for good luck. And a moon ago, he did encounter a real,
breathing, living reindeer. Here is the story of Hreindýr, the Reindeer Whisperer.

Hreindýr decided that, if he wanted to meet a reindeer, he should blend in. Because
if he didn't, the reindeer might punch him with their sharp antlers ━ that wasn't
something Hreindýr wanted to experience. He gathered materials to look like the
reindeer; two thick branches that looked like antlers, quite a few bells, a saddle and
a leather collar as well as a leather belt.

Hreindýr found a way to wear his 'antlers' ━ he used a big, transparent ribbon, and
prayed to Twinkleclan that his plan would work. He stuck the antlers on the ribbon
with twoleg 'glue' and tied the ribbon around his face. He had antlers!

Next, he glued some bells onto the leather collar and pushed the collar over his head
and around his neck. He then brought out the beautiful, soft green saddle, added bells
to that as well, and asked his very best friend, Oakspeck, to saddle him up.

Lastly, Hreindýr strapped his leather belt around his stomach. He was
ready to roll! He told Silverstar about his dream, and she agreed to let him spend a
moon or two searching for reindeer. Hazelpelt, Oakspeck's kind of mate, would be
Head Patroller until Hreindýr got back.

He noticed the weather was terrible, but he was going to have to live with it.

Hreindýr hugged his friends goodbye, somehow got Prancer to securely sit on his back,
and left to find reindeer. He knew that reindeer lived in the cold, so he would have to
walk for 3 days until he reached the Arctic Bubble.

The Arctic Bubble was a place surrounded by a huge, invisible bubble. Only animals
    could enter it.

The animals there included reindeer. He hoped they'd be as friendly as his mother's
reindeer; or else, he'd be in immense trouble. His mother had once told him that he
should never want a reindeer on his bad side.

As the rain fell on his fur, thunder booming around him, Hreindýr trekked through forests,
rivers and plains for three days and three nights, until he found the Arctic Bubble. He took
a deep breath and stepped through the barrier and into the Bubble, waiting for the cold to
    wrap itself around him.

But the cold never came. He looked behind him ━ his saddle was glowing, and so were
his collar and antlers. They must be magic! Hreindýr thought, and walked until he saw a
reindeer. The reindeer looked curiously at him; it recognized he wasn't a reindeer. Then, it
lifted it's head. Hreindýr knew this meant danger.

The reindeer bounded towards him. Hreindýr waited for the reindeer to end his life with the
use of it's antlers; this was the end. But the reindeer didn't do that. It threw him on it's back
with it's horns and sprinted away. Hreindýr looked back; the thunder had almost shot him
down. The reindeer had saved him.

Hreindýr nuzzled it's fur. Thank you. he whispered. I'll never forget what you did for me. The
reindeer neighed and Hreindýr started to leave. He wanted to come back very soon. But the
reindeer didn't let him go. It threw him on it's back again and started to run towards Peaceclan.

Hreindýr laughed. It wanted to come back with him. Thunder almost shot them down four times.
A very surprised Silverstar greeted him at the entrance of Peaceclan camp. "Who's this?" she
    asked. Hreindýr grinned.

"The best reindeer." he declared. "Now, let's get everyone safely into their dens."

Cat Name: Clattering Caribou
Gender: Tom
Rank: Village Ice-cat
Clan: The Principality
Age: 80 moons
Prompt: Intro - 112 | Entry - 819 ;-; | Extra - 95 | I hope the extra 19 words are ok-

    Introduction:

It was my fifth season as the village's ice-cat. My job was simple, deceptively so.

I merely had to cut ice with my comically named ice-sickle and heave it over to the villagers to store food for the coming spring and the remainder of winter. Really any other cat could do it; I wasn't sure as to why I had landed with the job. To be completely frank, I felt utterly useless for the rest of the year, only ever being called when the first icy wind swept into camp. The rest of the year, I lounged about, dreaming of secondary jobs but never making an effort: it was a losing game.

    Entry:

The frigid fangs of the season sliced through my thick coat, the color of a burnt chestnut, swirled with darker streaks. My mother had named me for my notorious coat, its bristly hairs matching the hues of caribou up north, her home. The tundra-born she-cat had traversed the smooth, grassy terrain once the anger and hatred towards her kind grew to great. She was descended from a line of cats closely connected to larger mammals, mostly caribou. This is greatly frowned upon in our Engleisle town, Halsar. Caribou were seen as boastful catches, and to protect such a trophy was blasphemous. So she moved to Ophigar of all places. The village was an absolute wreck, but the feline was determined to make a home for her coming kitten, me.

Today was just like the first day she arrived. Coughing and wheezing cats stumbling to and fro: disease. A plague had descended upon the Principality's neighboring village. The older, tougher cats could manage through it, but the kittens were often fatally disabled, and most of them died. I always had a hardened immune system, perhaps from the mother's strong will, or pure luck of the gods. Either way, I felt uneasy going into camp, as if the spell would wear off. The Principality's shaman, or healing cat, was away on a long and dangerous voyage to the Pit of the Obsidian Tiger, our spiritual cave. Wallowing Marmoset, a fluffy-cheeked cat was the apprentice shaman, next in line for the medicinal throne. They still had lots to learn, and I supposed now was as good a time as any to throw the poor cat into the belly of the beast to face the most horrid creatures imaginable: sniffling, whining kittens.

A wintry storm was brewing. Guess I'll have to change my plans. Again. I verbally huffed; my plans had gone from sunning myself, to realizing I needed to stock up on bedding. Maybe Wallow needs help. I skirted the temporary medicine tent and quickly found the entrance, poking my large nose into the murky and smoke-tainted air. The stench and heat of waste, burning incense, and half-chewed herbs hit me like a body slam. It was the smell of the plague. It was practically everywhere, but every time I went into this tent, my nose was reminded of that horrid rank. Wallow was in a corner, daintily prying open a kit's mouth to gently place some leaves.

    "Chew, please, dear."

The thin little thing obeyed, eyes shut from exhaustion. I cleared my throat, barely managing not to choke on that same smell. They looked up, their expression going from a stone-dead resignation to a glimmer of hope ignited in their sea-green eyes. "Clatter! Thank Garic you're here! [ Garic is Ophigar's deity/patron ] I know there's a big storm headed our way, but I need something from you. It's quite time sensitive," their eyes brimmed with worry and anxiety. "I need yew berries for the kits, but all of the bushes will die in the cold storm, so you must go now." Before my mind had time to process the hefty quest, a singular yellow orb was shoved into my paw, my flank being pushed out of the tent and into the frigid air. My body reacted first, and I shook my pelt, secured the berries in a pocket in my backpack harness, and checked my ice-sickle. Without putting much thought into my survival chance, my large paws pounded on the cold earth, leading to the forest.
    ~~
Tree after tree was dusted with white powder, growing by the minute. I had a thin layer of frost growing from my whiskers to my short tail. The cold hadn't quite broken through my fluffy defenses yet, but I could feel it waiting for the next breeze, stalking my skin as a wolf stalks a rabbit. The breath of the wild, untamed sky howled through my ears, catching me off guard and pushing me backward. My fur rippled, daggers of cold gripping my skin. I could barely see through the onslaught of snowflakes, throwing a haze over my surroundings. My face was numb, save for a scattering of pinpricks, most likely from the sheer cold. I squinted my eyes and was met by blurry brown lines: branches. I was no longer squinting as my brain registered the yew berry bush in front of me. I found it! It's here! My heart raced faster than it had ever before, even when hauling chunks of ice. Jaws clamped on the largest branch I could find, tore it off, and blindly ran back the way I'd come. It was physically easier to run with the wind, but it ruffled my coat and my will to keep going. I wanted to curl up and shiver away the snow on my skin, but my willpower forced me to stick it out as I ran back home. Back to my home.

    Extra:

I was woken by a sudden weight on my flank. My large green eyes fluttered and I saw a pawful of Maidens and kits lines in a semicircle around my nest. One of the older felines held up a forest-green cloak, complete with bells. A younger one had her jaw clamped on a pair of caribou antlers. The group of kits presented to me a stuffed reindeer.

In unison, all the kits smiled and said, "Thank you for saving us, Mr. Clatter!" The Maidens beamed with pride. Clearly, they had rehearsed that line many times.

Cat Name: Helios
Gender: Male
Rank: group member (class clown)
Clan: amaryllis group
Age: 2 years old
Prompt: [ 640 words ]

The wind howled outside, slashing violently against the cabin’s windows. The hinges shuddered softly, fighting the strength of the blizzard outside. Inside the fire popped and crackled, a direct contrast to the blistering cold outside. Before the fire sat a brown tom-cat joined by a handful of kits and a few other older cats. The kits were oblivious to the surge outside but the elders knew better.

“I’m sorry little ones, but it seems like the weather might be too bad for Santa Claws this year. Nor can we go out and make snow cats.” One of the older cats sighed, jumping down from the windowsill and shaking the incessant chill from being so close to the outside from their bones. The kits wailed in protests, cries of ‘No!!’, ‘Come onnnnn!’ and ‘Awwwww’ echoed around the fireplace, drowning out the gentle roar of the flames beside them.

Helios frowned softly and remembered back to when he was so little. This holiday used to be his favorite, and the visiting of Santa was his favorite part. He always enjoyed the thrill of trying to catch the mythical tom in the act. He used to fight sleep with all his might, despite the feeling of having five pound weights hanging from his eyelids. He’d always just wake up in the morning with no recollection of falling asleep and rushing downstairs to see what was delivered. Helios loved to see the plate of tuna eaten and tiny bowl of milk being lapped up completely. Frustration overtook the tom before ideas began to form. The kits in the meantime, have seen to forget the disappointment laid out to them moments ago.

The other elders chuckled softly amongst themselves. It was growing peaceful, until it seemed as if one of the kits remembered their presents. “Hey!” They cried, “What about our presents?!” They demanded, and the rest chimed in, backing up the desire for gifts. The elders exchanged glances before the eldest, like before, sat to distribute the bad news.

“I’m sorry little ones, but if Santa doesn’t come there’s going to be no presents.” The eldest sighed, and the kits began to wail. As the young ones threw a fit, an idea popped into Helios’s head. Remembering back to last Halloween, Helios slinked off to find his costume. After digging around for a bit, the tom pulled out the clothing, praying that it still fits. It might’ve taken some wiggling and some sucking in of his new size, Helios was now decked out in something he hoped would satiate the kits. With a last minute thought, he gathered some older toys of his and shoved them in a small bag, stepping into the string of the bag so it tied around his waist.

He hit behind the corner, calling out, “I heard there’s some kits in need of cheer in here!” He heard the kits squeal excitedly in response. Helios grinned to himself before prancing around from behind the corner. The kits went crazy, rushing up to him and bouncing excitedly before him.

“Oh my god a reindeer!”

“Maybe Santa really is coming!”

“Yayyy presents!!”

Helios chuckled, tail waving high with excitement. “Sadly, Santa won’t be able to make it, but I’m here on his behalf with some presents for the kits on the top of the nice list!” The kits burst out into cheers. “Here, everyone take one.” He stepped out of the string and the bag fell open, revealing slightly beat-up toys but the kits didn’t seem to mind. They dove into the pile, each running off with their own new toy. They congregated back around the fireplace, giggling and laughing away. The elders came up to Helios, congratulating him for his last-minute thinking. They patted his back with their tails. Helios beamed, proud that he could keep the Christmas cheer alive.

    Cat Name: buckley/buckwheat
    Gender: male
    Rank: foreigner
    Clan: the still waters!!
    Age: 84 moons
    Prompt: 797 words !!

Warmth scatters across his cheeks, freckles of dust rise as he rocks – back and forth, forward and backward. The exact same rhythm that had been sung for all those nights, but today it was different… not the pointless rhythm the chair had skittered to. Because today strung single lights of hope, swinging.

The hope to take what was stolen from him, and that time… was soon.

In paw, a crinkled sienna paper rests, signed with a crimson pawprint, and those same familiar dark scars across the page. A letter from an old friend.

    -------

Hey Buck,– I know how much you hate that name, but… hahaha! I'm annoying that way! It's fun to make you annoyed! (: Anyway, I would use the good old fashion, how are you, and whatnot, but I'm a little busy. Sorry!

I hope you're not dead yet, old friend, if you are, this is kinda of a waste of time– But anyway I know the first thing you would ask is about your one and only granddaughter! Oceanflutter!

And… she's fine I suppose, really good at sewing those clothes! She did a good job taking over after you for the business, but not as good as she could be if you were around. She misses you… alot, like sometimes I can't even explain it.

I think you miss her too, and… well… you want her back.

Lucky for you, I've figured something out! Apparently the cats are hosting a winter dance near the village! And I think that's not too far away from you! It's at night!!!!!! And by the time this gets to you, that's today.

    -------

Fabrics scatter across the floors, rows of pale needles aligned into an army of stars. Collections of silver and gold jingling bells rattle. And the only thing he could think of was his granddaughter, the only reason to go out tonight.

Clothing… was important… at least for this event .

His eyes look to the clouds, and they seemed to sing the song of beautiful weather.

    Light.
    Warmth.
    Happy.

A breath in. With a paw brushing against the needles… sage eyes dance across the fabrics, and that familiar spark lit his gaze. An idea, all he needed, just for tonight.

    I'm coming Oceanflutter, I am.

    -------

He was ready… with silver bells hanging to sage fabric, to the russet antlers on the top of his head. And for a second the question bubbles inside his head, What if she didn't come with him? Paws tremble, and legs quaver. What if?

His gaze travels out a window, expecting the clouds to sing those beautiful words– Light, Warmth, Happy. but no, they didn't. Instead they sang.

    Snow.
    Ice.
    Cold.

His eyes close, and paws collapse from underneath him. Head spinning, he manages to muster a fragile paw to grasp onto the rocking chair.

    Why?
    Why?
    Why?

    Oceanflutter.
    Oceanflutter.
    Oceanflutter.

His paw slides, sending him tumbling across the floor, blurry vision welcoming him, the second he let go. But deep within he makes the choice.

No, another time… not now… not like this.

''Bad weather.'' he whispers to himself, a soft hiss, ''Don't let me forget, don't go. Weather terrible. No one's going to be there, no one. You won't find her, '

    -------

Eyelids flutter open, scanning his little wooden cottage, with flames crackling and the clock ticking the first thing hits his mind.

    Oceanflutter? Winter Dance?

He lets a soft hiss escape his jaws. There was something off, he needed to not do something, but what? His gaze lifts to the old clock, he needed to go to take his granddaughter, either way whatever he was forgetting,

It was probably only a little thing.

Creakily rising to his feet, he leaves, making sure to gently close the door behind him. The thing Oceanflutter always did.

Immediately bitter frost blows, flying at him. The comfort of his home long gone, no more warmth from the fire, no more. But yet he manages to keep pushing on, the only thing in his memory was her… Oceanflutter.

    She needed him.
    She missed him.
And most of all… he needed her.

With the winds sweeping and the snow pilling he continues, squinting to find his way to the village.

    -------

He was here, but dead silence greeted him. ''Oceanflutter?'' He calls again, voice slowly cracking into fragments, ''Oceanflutter?''

He presses himself against cold stone, a firm foundation for his weary head. Waitting, and Waiting, and Waiting, for the event to begin… to see her… to rescue her from this place,

A frown curves on his jaws, paws tremble, as just moments pass.

There was something wrong, wasn't there?

    ''Oceanflutter? Where are you?''

Aspen had just finished packing up all of the presents he had worked on all year making. There were plushies and toys of different shapes and sizes made for the kits living in the nearby village now snuggly packed into his small sled. Getting ready to go, Aspen glanced out the door to the barn and realized the snow had started falling heavier since he last looked out. It was only getting worse the longer he looked and he knew it would be a tough trek through it to get to the village. The wind shifted and blew a flurry of snow in his face and he shook to get the cold of a stray snowflake out of an ear. Preparing to face the bitter cold as it only got darker with the storm, Aspen slipped into his cloak and scarf. He couldn't just leave the little ones to face the coming morning with bitter cold and no toys to bring some joy.
Aspen moved his small sled outside into the snow and shut the barn door. Slipping into the strap to pull the cart, he set out.
As he trudged along the trail, the snow was getting deeper and he shifted his scarf to better cover his nose. Moving through the storm, he considered stopping under some branches of a nearby tree. But Aspen shook his head to rid himself of some snow that had gathered and the thoughts. Settling down in this cold would do no one any good. His paws and nose felt like they had long gone numb, but he continued on. Soon though, he realized it seemed the flurries had thinned a bit. Bolstering his strength, he gave himself thoughts of the warm fires and happy faces that awaited him in the village, and pushed through the snow. Just as he cleared the last hill, the clouds broke enough to let through moonlight lighting the path ahead to the village with glowing windows. With a last push of energy, Aspen pushed on to the leader's cabin to warm himself and spread the joy that can be found even in the coldest of winter nights.
