prompt :: Howling. That was all Kevan could hear in his ears as he tried to tune out the world around him. A frantic howling that rose in pitch, becoming what resembled a scream. Passionate souls, trying to find their place in the world once more. When he opened his eyes, he could see them. The ghosts of the kalons who had come before him, gathering to try and drag those he loved down with him. They were so lonely, couldn't he see? Didn't he understand? They wanted to be loved again, to be seen, to be heard.

They wanted life, and they did not care whose they had to take to regain it.

He had been able to see them his entire live, ever since he was a kit. The ghosts never left his life, and he was terrified of them. He eventually learned to ignore them, tune them out, focus on the living and those he could help. The dead had finished their stories had they not? He wanted to do more than help write an epitaph.

It was that desire to help the living that made him agree to sail the waters, despite knowing about the drowned souls that filled the depths. They were just going to get a few fish, nothing more. Only... the storm had struck faster than either of them could have predicted. And now the ghosts were trying to drown them all.

No.

He could stop this.

With a deep breath, he made his way forward. Opening his mouth, he began to sing in a language they could understand. "Come lost souls, come to me. Away from the fetters of death, let my life open the way for you to see. Away, away, from the deaf you fight, come to me and let me be your light..."

A siren's call to the lost. He was not sure if it would even work. But as he sang, they began to pull away from the crew and towards him. The rest of the crew finally had a chance to breathe, to seek shelter, to get themselves upright and swimming towards shore. But what of himself?

Spiritcaller. That was what he became. In facing his greatest fear, from that point onward he could never turn away from it again. The Spirit Guides took notice. The Spirits took notice. And his life was never the same. But he held no regrets, despite having to dance between the world of the living and the world of the dead. The crew was alive... and he was mostly. It was good enough. It had to be, for it was his new reality.

reading through all of the answers to the prompt, lots of things to fear in the ocean it seems!

However I found myself consistently drawn to one response in particular! The transition from one
fear to another from a change in perspective of the world, was super well written and as such,
