Sitting alone in a small cafe, Brielle stared at her laptop's screen with disinterest. Job postings and auditions scrolled by her feed, a monotonous menagerie of false hopes and unfounded dreams. In fact, her mood matched the weather outside: rain pelted the windows, soaking the city outside and all of the bustling people racing to nowhere. The sky was dull and grey, permeating melancholy even through the coziness of the cafe and the hushed conversations of friends enjoying their company. Brielle heaved a heavy sigh then, slowly closing her laptop and taking a sip of tea that had long since gone cold. Dark-rimmed exhausted eyes squinted in disappointment, then turned out to watch the myriad of umbrellas weave along the sidewalk, going to jobs and homes and parties; much like her, she mused, the city never slept. Why had she even moved here? She hated the bustle and the noise, but the allure of becoming an actress had been so strong... It didn't matter now, though. She was too tired to go through one more audition, and honestly, she really just wanted to accept defeat and move home.

"You've been here awhile, I'm sure that tea is cold. Here, I made you a new one, on the house!" Looking up, Brielle came face to face with a female Kalon she'd never met before, and suddenly there was a beacon of color in her otherwise dreary world. "My name is Kaja, it's nice to meet you."

A small bell rang to the cafe's door opening. "Evenin sugar'. Welcome to Cafe Innocence." said a young woman at the bar. The woman had a subtle drawl to her speech, and wore a gown reminiscent of flapper attire. The cafe itself was remodeled and decorated to look like a speakeasy. "Sugarbun," replied the brute male who had entered. The woman blinked at the mention of her name. "Brutus," she replied curtly. "I'd like to order," said Brutus. That was better. No names. She smiled. "Of course dear," she said, batting her lashes, pulling a long breath from the cig in her fingers. "I'd like an Innocent Aide." he said quietly.

Right. Brutus and his sector needed aide. That's what that drink name meant. She scoffed, exhaling the smoke from her earlier pull. His sector didn't deserve that aide. "I'm so sorry sir, that item is not on our menu..." she paused. "Boys," she looked to the other large males that stood about. "Escort him out. We will no longer be serving this customer..." she sneered, a toothy grin on her face.

"Sugarbun! You'll regret this!" Brutus spat as men twice his size drug him out by the arms. "You're startin' a war Sugarbun!" he shouted. "You an' what army, Brutus?" Sugarbun retorted. "You and you're 'sector' are no longer a part of this syndicate." she air quoted around sector.

The door slammed and the cafe fell silent.

Briar sat in the very front of the small cafe, her paws occupied by a warm cup of coffee and her eyes focused on the light rain that fell outside. It wasn't a gorgeous day, but she decided to spend it in the warm shop no less. She had just finished a very stressful exam and knew nothing would cheer her up more than seeing her friends at the Muddy Paws cafe, a shop she spent almost all her free time at. She ordered the same drink every time, a hot caramel latte, and the employees at the shop would have it ready for her at the same time every day. She rested her head on her paw as she brought the steaming drink up to her mouth and took a short sip. She shivered as the hot liquid ran down her throat, relishing in the warmth that followed in its wake. She couldn't help but let a smile creep onto her face at the taste; it was always perfect.

Briar sighed softly as a feeling of comfort and relief washed over her; the exam was over, and she could finally relax until the grade was posted. Once she had finally unwound, the young woman reached into her bag and pulled out a small, well-used book. She flipped to the bookmarked page and began reading with a smile, prepared to spend her next couple of hours seated in her spot, worrying about nothing as the time crawled by.
