It was on her walk home from the marketplace in Sweetpuddle town that Ari noticed the stone. The tiny orb was shimmering in the setting sunlight, nestled amongst the grass and twigs that ran alongside the dirt paths leading through the dense woodlands. She approached it cautiously; wandering off of the paths in these forests was never the best idea, nobody know what lay beyond the thick shrubbery and tall grass. Thinking about what could be in there at this time of night made her shudder in fright.
She leaned down to get a better look at the stone, it was similar to the marbles that folks from Lumos beach would sell. They were made from rounded-out shards of colourful sea glass that wash up on the shores, always popular with children at marketplaces. But this stone upon closer inspection was nothing like the marbles, it was pale pink and had other colours twisting together in the center. As Ari rolled it around gently with her hoof she could feel warmth radiating off of the stone. Definitely some kind of magical artifact then, something someone would pay a decent price for.
When she pulled away from the stone the warmth faded and suddenly she could feel eyes on her from somewhere amongst the underbrush. Hurriedly she picked the stone up and threw it into her pack bag before making her way back onto the dirt path and heading home. The less time she stays within these haunted woods the better. Ari resisted the urge to look behind, the feeling of watchful eyes never leaving her until she broke through the forest and reached home.

Ari greeted her parents and rushed up to her room as quickly as possible, not before dumping the berry-baked goods she'd bought from the market earlier on the kitchen bench. When she made it to her room she shut the door behind her, gently placing the bag on her bed. Slowly she pulled the stone out, it seemed to glimmer and shine even in the dim light of her room.
She should really show this thing to her mother, after all, she was a collector of shiny things and perhaps she'd have some idea of what this thing was and if it was even worth anything. But something about it just seemed to call to her and the protective warmth that enveloped her when she held it was addictive.
A small pop from behind her tore Ari from her thoughts and she spun around, pressing the stone to herself instinctively as if to hide it. And then she nearly dropped it when her mind caught up to her eyes. Because floating in her bedroom was a pokemon only heard of in children's nursery rhymes and picture books. A mew was lazily floating in the air, blowing small pink bubbles that sparkled and popped raining down glitter into her carpet. And oh god that was never going to come out of the rug, was it?
She frowned at the mew, hackles raised and she backed away and stepped towards her desk. "How did you get in here?" she asked, narrowing her eyes at the stranger floating in her room.
The creature simply grinned at her, mischief written all over its face. Its gaze flickered down to the stone pressed firmly against her chest fluff. "You found my stone," it said avoiding the question.
Ari scoffed "Your stone? It was laying in the middle of the haunted woods, you should really take better care of your belongings" she rolled it onto her desk.
The mew simply rolled its eyes and drifted closer, making Ari let out a warning huff. "My parents are downstairs they'll hear me if I call them" she warned and the Mew simply cocked its head.
"What are you expecting me to do?" It asked cryptically and Ari didn't like the grin plastered on the thing's face.
"Calm down I’m not here to hurt you" the mew giggled and looped around in the air, drifting in lazy patterns as if it was swimming in a pool instead. Ari watched mesmerized by the creature's graceful movements.
"It's my stone," Ari said suddenly "finders keepers yknow"
The mew held its hands up in mock surrender "I wasn't trying to take it, the stone is yours now"
"So then what are you doing here?" Ari pressed.
The mew grinned at her full of mischief again "Well I'm just a part of the package"
Ari frowned and looked at the stone again before returning her gaze to the mew who seemed to demand attention with every lazy but calculated swoop through the air. "What is it?" she asked "What does it even do, what's so special about it?"
Mew laughed and stopped its hypnotic movements. "You've got an audino hybrid for a mother but you don't recognize the stone?" and Ari felt her face flush with embarrassment and anger.
"Stop being so cryptic and just spit it out" she grumbled
"It's an audinite, a stone allowing the user to mega evolve"
Ari screwed her face up in disgust "Isn't that something trainers force on their pokemon?" she asked and Mew simply laughed at her again.
"No, silly" it tapped her on the nose and she shrunk back glaring at it "Anyone with a stone can do it willingly if they really want to"
"Doesn't it hurt?" she asked and Mew shook its head. Ari frowned at the stone looking from it to Mew and then back again. "Do all mega stones come with a complementary annoying Mew then?" she asked and the Mew huffed blowing air in her face before returning to its lazy air patterns.
"No, you just got lucky"
"Unlucky" Ari quipped with a grin.
Mew glared at her and stuck out its tongue "No, this mega stone is special, it comes with a certain responsibility to the user" Mew explained waving its hands in vague gestures as it spoke.
Ari narrowed her eyes at the mew "Responsibility?" she asked.
Mew nodded enthusiastically and Ari felt dread forming in her stomach, twisting and churning uncomfortably. Maybe picking up this mysterious stone, the audinite, was a bad idea. She should really know better than to pick up strange magical objects in the woods but yet here she was.
"This specific stone is one that's passed down from user to user through different generations, it usually changes to changes to fit the current holder" Mew explained moving to hover over her desk.
Ari frowned in confusion "This wasn't given to me though, I found it in the woods"
Mew looked off behind her through the window, gaze going distant as if it was recalling memories. "The last holder disappeared in... Mysterious circumstances"
"Mysterious circumstances?" she repeated, her voice raising in pitch because what the heck does that even mean?
Mew nodded solemnly, frowning for the first time in their meeting. "It was so long ago… I've been trapped waiting for someone else to find this stone for... Gosh, I don't know what year is it now?" It looked around and caught sight of a calendar. The mew gasped softly, paws pressed to its mouth in shock.
"Why'd it suddenly appear to me?" Ari asked, hoping to break the mew out of whatever troubled thoughts it was having so she could finally understand what in the world was going on.
Mew looked at her and shook its head to rid itself of thoughts, seeming to attempt to pull itself together to finish this explanation. "Right right, my guess is that the stone thought you were worthy and decided to present itself to you"
"Worthy?" Ari repeated and mew simply shrugged.
"It's the only thing I can think of, like I said this particular mega stone is special!"
Ari nodded to herself as if any of this even made an ounce of sense. “Right… How do I evolve using it then?” She asked, nervous energy coursed through her body like electricity. He couldn’t help but feel excited at the prospect of it, even if all the alarm bells in her head were ringing loudly crashing together in a deafening symphony.
Mew grinned at her “I’ll show you how tomorrow”

The next day Ari found herself in the grass clearing near her home. It’s a place she’d foundas a child whilst exploring the haunted forest near her home, it seemed to be the only place where sunlight actually broke through the treetops and it felt like a protective sphere in the center of a terrifying forest.
Mew didn’t seem to leave her alone now that she’d activated the stone, she slept on Ari’s bedroom floor on a blanket and introduced herself properly. Before she promptly passed out.
And that first statement rang true as Mew joined her in the clearing, letting out a low whistle as she observed their surroundings. “This is perfect for your training”
“My what?” Ari frowned and mew just ignored her, floating around the grassy clearing in lazy somersaults. Before seemingly finding the perfect spot in a beam of sunlight and blowing a bubble for herself to sit on comfortably. Mew ushered her over and instructed Ari to take the stone out.
Ari obeyed and pulled the stone out of her bag, smiling to herself as its warmth flowed through her and filled her with comfort. Something about it just seemed to ease her nerves. She looked up at Mew expectantly “So now what?”
“Now you mega evolve” Mew stated simply.
She frowned and mumbled out “I don’t know how to do that” which caused the Mew to groan dramatically and throw her hands back, bubble bobbing underneath her.
“Must I explain everything to you, my other hosts knew what to do”
Ari let out a huff and glared up at the Mew “I wasn’t exactly expecting this to be my Saturday morning plans yknow”
The Mew cracked open an eye at her and sighed dramatically again “Okay, I can’t really tell you what to do it’s more of a feeling yknow? It should be instinct! Just hold your stone and concentrate on it for a sec”
She nodded taking in the words. The warmth that flooded her senses from the stone had a certain feeling to it that she just couldn’t explain, she did her best to block out the annoying cat pokemon that floated in front of her and concentrated on the feeling. On the way it seemed to be almost calling to her, and she listened.
With the deep breath in and out she closed her eyes tightly and focused on the feeling, on the way the stone seemed to be talking to her whispering words of reassurance. It was a bizarre feeling and it wasn’t entirely unwelcome.
Even with her eyes shut tightly she could see the stone lighting up in her hoof, the bright light bathing the clearing in a blinding white. Bright exploding lights danced behind her eyelids as she felt her body shifting and changing with the stones whims.
Ari could feel energy building up inside of her, as if she was building up to use a particularly strong move but she couldn’t figure out what it was, it was foreign and nothing she’d ever used before. So she let it out trusting in Mew hoping she wouldn’t let anything bad happen to either of them.
And when she opened her eyes the area around them both was sparkling. They were both bathed in a soft pink glow that radiated from Ari for a moment before disappearing, sparkles fading away as she blinked her eyes rapidly to adjust. The area around them felt warm and safe.
Mew interrupted her thoughts by clapping her hands together and grinning from ear to ear. “You did it!” she cheered and Ari mirrored her expression.
“I did it” she whispered to herself, voice quivering with excitement.
Mew flew towards her, positively beaming “Let's start training you up then, can’t have the protector of Fauv be a complete newbie in the face of danger!”
And Ari felt all the joy and warmth drain from her at once. “The protector of what?!”
Mew simply tilted her head “Didn’t I say the stone had responsibilities to take on,”
Ari felt herself sit down on the sunwarmed grass out of shock “Oh Arceus I shouldn’t have picked up that damn stone”
