You approach the rough looking first mate of the ship as he takes a seat at the table for a drink. It's rather odd to see this goobie with a giant smile plastered on his face as he laughs and jokes with other members of the crew.
Perhaps he's not as mean as you first thought.
Curious, you approach and ask him about the biggest change in his life.

"Fear shot through every inch o' fur on me body as I backed up against a wall behind me. I was breathin' hard t' catch me breath, me body shakin' from fear 'n exhaustion.
In front o' me was a mighty large, mighty angry wild stray beast. It snarled, drool hangin' from its maw, as it came closer.
I was scared, o' course I was. The creature was easily big enough t' take me down 'n do major damage t' me. One wrong move 'n I would 'ave been beast grub. Nobody would even notice I was missin'.
I had somehow managed t' upset it by walkin' too close t' it's territory while trying t' get a job done t' earn meself some doubloons.
I was barely ole enough t' be out on me owns but I had nobody else t' rely on. I was an orphan, ye see. No mother, no father, no other family besides meself.
'twas me against the world."
The goobie in front of you sighs. It sounds bittersweet as he glances off outside a nearby window.
Despite being lonely back then, he now had a new family. One that was way better than any birth family could have ever been. One that wouldn't abandoned him over his looks."Anyways, the beast was growlin' 'n barin' it's teeth at me while increasingly gettin' closer 'n closer t' takin' a bite out o' me goo.
Then he got queit as he lunged down, preparin' t' jump at me.
He jumped, landin' right on top o' me 'n pushin' me back hard against the wall behind me. It chipped at me back fin as the beast took a chunk o' me ear.
But at the last moment another goobie came along, shoutin' 'n wavin' at the beast t' scare it off.
Which worked. Thank god.
The cur soon ran off wit' its tail between its legs aft bein' surprised by the much older goobie.
The goobie that saved me tail that day was none other than the cap'n o' the ship I sail upon today. The mightiest ship 'n crew o' all time.
He then fished a few doubloons from his bag 'n tossed 'em me way saying t' fix up me ear that was now bleeding o'er the dock.
I barely managed t' catch 'em, dropping most o' 'em afore scrambling on t' me knees t' pick 'em up.
When I looked back up the cap'n was already walking away, no doubt returning t' his ship 'n crew.
I remember thinking how cool he must've been while I watched 'im leave like naught had happened. He was me hero.
I owe cap'n greatly 'n pledge me loyalty t' 'im 'til the day I draw me last breath.
Aft that I recall trailing 'im aft he had offered me a few doubloons, begging that he take me where ever 'twas he was going.
He refused."
The gruff goobie huffed out a deep laugh."He said I was jus' a whimpish brat that wouldna be able t' do anythin'. The worst thing he told me was that I wouldna survive a single day out on the open ocean.
I bet he feels like a fool fer sayin' as much.
Anyways, I wouldna take no as an answer 'n snuck me way onto his ship anyways. I hid wit' the cargo that he had happened t' be docked in order t' take on board.
I stayed thar fer a few hours, hidin' in the dark wit' the cargo. I had found a crate o' apples 'n, knowin' no better, ate as many as I could fit inside me stomach.
The firstmate o' the time later found me 'n dragged me straight t' the captains cabin, fumin' mad. I was more lily-livered then than I was o' the dog. I was sure I was goin' t' be thrown overboard.
I couldn't swim so I was sure I was doomed to pay a visit to ol' Davey Jones's locker.
The cap'n, howe'er reluctant he was t', let me join his crew aft seein' how stubborn I was t' join.
I started off as a cabin boy; a mere whelp.
I had t' pay off the apples I had eaten somehow.
'n let me tell ye, it ain't easy work bein' one o' 'em. Lots o' runnin' 'n lots o' doin' whatever everyone else tells ye. No breaks 'til ye're ready t' pass out on the ship's deck.
I soon worked me way up the ranks aft proving that I was a hard working 'n had skills t' offer to the crew.
Thats how I got to the position I be in now. I be the first mate through hard work 'n dedication to the cap'n.
The day cap'n saved me behind was the day me life changed fer the better."
The goob has a small but still complex look on his face as his story comes to an end. It seems the memory gives him both happy and sad emotions.

"Sir... Captian... Do I really have to do all of this by myself?" The young goobie asked, looking up at the much older goobie with a lost look.
He had been given the task to clean the living quarters. It was not an easy task by any means but it was a simple one. It was necessary too.
"Ye wanted t' join me crew, didn' ye? Prove that ye 'ave wha' it takes. Then I'll think real hard about not leavin' ye at the next town we dock at."
The young goob still seemed reluctant but gave a small nod. "O-okay. I'll do it."
"Atta boy," The Captian said, patting his head as he left the living quarters.
The young goob let out a deep sigh as he glanced over the rooms he had been left in. It was an utter mess. It looked as if it hasn't been cleaned in years. He certainly had a large job to do.
But he pulled his boots up and got to it, wanting to prove to the Captian that he was more than capable.
By the time the captain returned only half the cleaning had been done but the young goob was still working hard. What he had cleaned was sparkling.
"Good job, boy!" The Captian hollared, "Consider yourself a new memeber o' me crew!"
The goob looked at him with surprise, joy and confusion.
"But, captain, I didn't clean it all yet?"
The captain laughed. "But ye've done a mighty fine job o' wha' ye 'ave swabed! 'n thar'll be time fer ye t' improve yer speed."
From that point the goob was a part of the mightiest sea crew to ever exsit. He started out as a simple cabin boy and rapidly moved up through the ranks. In a few years, he had become the first mate.

"I used t' be quite the scrany sprog when i was younger. Although, many people told me that jusrt meant that i would grow up t' be a right ol' looker."

Despite this Goobie's rather rough outside appearance he has a heart of solid gold. He may enjoy barking a few orders here and there but it's purely his way of showing his love for his crewmates. Making sure each and every member is doing what they're supposed to and that they're safe and accounted for.
The crew has a rumour going around that if you can get a few pints of grog down Khai's neck that he becomes a whole new Goobie. Telling each and every member why he treasures them and making sure they know they're loved like his family.

Khai is very talented when it comes to sword play. He has saved the lives of his crewmates many, many times. Be it from monsters, the authorities or other pirate attacks.
He always stands his ground, taking his place besides the captain as they both go head first into a fight together.
