a swimming contest? gecko was still iffy of the water due to how it was back at home, yet they couldn't turn down a competition. they were a little too try-hard when it came to contests and would give it their all just to prove that they could do it, even if they did come off as a show-off sometimes. they'd happily put aside their iffiness of the water just to race other cats. who knows, maybe they'd learn something new.

“aw c’mon, cliff…” with a little grin, he wades into the silver waters, offering the quivering bundle of light curls a small nudge. “the water’s hardly gonna bite!”

cliff shuddered. “i know. it’s just…”

his smile is gentle, light and teasing at the edges. “it’s alright. but y'know what you could do on those shores of safety?"

"... deliver a message to your love?"

he chuckles. "don't have one. but you could make a sandcastle in my honor." he winks, sweeping his tail along the sands. "y'know to cheer me on!"

cliff snorts softly, but nods. "i'll make one to cheer everyone on."

"well, then!" the waters surround him, a gentle blanket of shimmering silk. "better get started - the competition is about to begin!"

Spiderbite grinned, perking up at the challenge - a swimming competition? Things really were starting to look up again.

Could she swim? Well, not really, but with the combined experiences of falling into the lake back home and the lake right here at her paws, surely falling in on purpose for once couldn't be all that hard.

[I Like Bees]

The campers line up on the sandy shore of the lake, with Cliff watching them in nervous anticipation. At a loud "GO!" from Birchmist, the cats take off into the lake and start swimming! Well.. most of them do, anyways.

nindroidzane: Turned out Spiderbite was really, really good at falling into the lake. She had a rough start, running into the lake and landing splat on her face in the water, but her luck quickly turned around. Moments later, she was caught in a very convenient current, which whooshed her all the way to the finish line before you could finish saying "Feeterina's stinky cheese." It was almost like an aquatic horsefly was helping the struggling molly... Regardless, Spiderbite won the race, and Birchmist offered her some neat items as a prize! +event token, +team point, +star's grace, +cat

Vivika: As the race began and dozens of cats poured into the water, he quickly found himself left behind in dead last. The tom kept swimming determinedly, but it was only when he caught sight of Cliff on the shore -- intently focused on the construction of his sandcastle -- that he found the extra strength to speed ahead of the other cats, winning second place! Birchmist congratulated the cat once he reached the shore, and offered him some items. +event token, +team point, +boon of fertility

jay.: Gecko remained apprehensive of the water, but their determination and focus paid off! As cat after cat dropped out and became distracted by various shiny things in the water, Gecko pulled ahead and finished the race in third. Birchmist offered his congratulations and rewarded them with some items. +event token, +team point, +hourglass

Adamented: Harja's strong swimming ability really paid off, and he was able to keep ahead of most of the group for the first half of the race. He started to fall farther behind as the race continued, however, but he had a good time swimming. Soon enough, the cat proudly stepped out of the water on the other side of the lake. Birchmist ran up to him and offered some items as a prize for finishing. +shooting star, +30 SD

miraphoenix: As the race began, Sunshore calmly stepped off the sunlit shore and into the lake.. only for their paw to immediately brush something slimy in the water. Startled, they jump back out of the water, snagging some plants on their fur in the process. +1 juniper berries (explore herb)

Griff: Crowcall's enthusiasm got him far ahead of many of the other racers.. at first. About halfway through the race, he caught sight of a big fish swimming past -- maybe his fishing luck had finally turned around! Swimming competition forgotten, he raced after the fish instead and caught it. Take that, fish! +20 SD

dascanadiansparkle: Firestrike did a great job of ignoring his fear of water, at first! The other side of the lake was just so far though... When he heard a kittypet calling for help back near the shore, he was the first to turn around and run to help, happy to put his feet back on dry land for a valid cause. +NR MYO

Deercan: Sundew bounded into the water excitedly right from the start. Unfortunately, her fur did slow her down a bit, but he managed to swim beside another of the campers and strike up a friendly conversation for awhile. But wait, what's that- ooo shiny thing 👀 Sundew offered a quick farewell to their newfound friend, then dove into the lake after the sparkly object. +boon of fertility

Chanceuxcat: Heartpurr enjoyed the race quite a lot more than she had first expected! She was doing pretty well, too, until a fish brushed past her paw and distracted her. Surely she could catch that and be back in the race in just a moment, right? The cat chased after the fish for awhile, and caught it triumphantly! Unfortunately, it was too late for her to win the race, and she was getting pretty tired, so she paddled back to shore with her fish. +20 SD

coffee.berry: With Cliff's encouragement, and Tiger's own enthusiasm, Tiger was able to swim all the way to the other side of the lake! She didn't win, but had lots of fun swimming with the other campers, and even spotted her old friend Fishy during the race. When she arrived at the finish line, Birchmist offered her a few items as a reward. +star's greetings, +30 SD

hallowitch: It was a bit unexpected, but Birchmist happily agreed to let Goldfleck participate in the race as a referee. He even offered him a spare item as a thank you for helping out! Luckily, no disagreements broke out and everyone played fair. Goldfleck even managed to find some sparkly stardust in the shallow water while watching the other campers. +starburst, +30 SD

LittleMaple: Eveningstar swam near the front of the group, continuing to show off her swimming ability by diving and appearing beside the other competing campers, startling several. It was during one of these dives that she noticed a fish gliding past.. Surely she had plenty of time to catch that and still finish! She chased after the fish and caught it successfully, but when she resurfaced, she found that the race had already ended. +30 SD

Vinson: Smolderingkestrel's swim went smoothly at first, and he was quite enjoying it too! It was nice to be in the water and out of the hot sun. Until a slimy lake creature of some sort brushed his paws and sent him running back to shore and into the bushes, some herbs catching on his fur along the way. +1 catchweed (explore herb)

angel bugs: Bouchard didn't swim particularly fast, but he did manage to increase his place in the competition a few times by startling groups of fish towards the other campers. With a few of the others out of his way and distracted by prey, he soon finished the race and accepted some items from Birchmist. +stellar remnants, +30 SD

kiffell: Koalatuft's swimming skills turned out to be quite helpful, and he swam effortlessly near the front of the group for the entirety of the race. While he didn't win, Koalatuft quite enjoyed the swim, and he was happy to accept some items from Birchmist at the finish line. +starburst, +30 SD

Goatmom: Swallowflight was quite enjoying swimming today! That is, until his paw got caught on some plants underwater. The tom struggled in the center of the lake, trying desperately to free his foot, until Furzetuft caught sight of the straggling camper and dove into the lake to rescue him. The counselor dragged Swallowflight back to shore to recover from the ordeal, and offered him a bit of stardust to cheer him up. +10 SD

Sha the Sheep: Haywings dove into the water and started swimming as fast as he could, right from the start! ... Until he felt something gross and slimy brush against his paws. Ew, who knew what kind of weird creature that could be! He bolted back to shore, dashed into the bushes at top (land) speed and accidentally collected some herbs in his pelt along the way. +1 wintergreen (explore herb)

sunny-skies: Honeybee had lots of fun during the competition! She enjoyed swimming casually near the back of the group, taking her time to appreciate the view across the lake. She even spotted a pretty water bird diving for food nearby. Before she knew it, she had finished the race, and Birchmist was offering her some items. +starburst, +30 SD

kennymcnenny: Rattle Snake did indeed do his best. He stuck near some of the other campers to help a bit with his fear of open water, and managed to successfully cross the finish line! Once Rattle Snake was back on shore, Birchmist offered him some items for finishing the race. +gravity's pull, +30 SD

Divantae: Lionbloom's good luck charm must have worked, because he managed to avoid all the distractions and mishaps that led many of the other campers to abandon the race. He had a quite a calm swim all the way to the finish line, and when he climbed out of the water, Birchmist approached to offer him some items. +boon of fertility, +30 SD

LiLi041: All of Hal's swimming practice really had paid off! He swam strongly near the front of the group during the majority of the race. While he wasn't quite able to make it to the lead, he felt proud of himself for finishing, and gladly accepted a few items from Birchmist as a reward. +stellar remnants, +30 SD

galaxyy.: Meadowshine managed to pull to a near lead a few more times throughout the race, but wasn't quite fast enough to win. She enjoyed the race though, and burst into a grin as she crossed the finish line and accepted some prizes from Birchmist. +gravity's pull, +30 SD

DaniCalifornia: Wanderer swam with the other racing campers at first, but it wasn't long before a particularly shiny fish in the water caught their eye. They changed direction to chase after the prey for awhile, but unfortunately once the fish was caught, they had lost too much time to finish the race. +30 SD

craig?: Appletree may not have any experience swimming, but after two weeks at Camp Charcuterie, she was excellent at fishing! While the other campers were racing, she and Parkpaw were able to catch an extra fish while sitting by the shore. +20 SD

Whovian5EVA: Littlepaw was excited to start swimming and dashed into the water right away.. only to turn around and race back to shore as something mysterious and slimy slipped past her paws, ew! Hopefully this won't ruin her opinion of her favorite camp activity. :( On the bright side, some herbs caught on her fur as she ran through the bushes! +1 catmint (explore herb)

lovage: The water felt cool and refreshing against Nightfall's fur, and he enjoyed the race calmly, remaining roughly in the center of the group throughout the competition. Nothing eventful happened to him, and soon enough he crossed the finish line and accepted some items from Birchmist. +stellar remnants, +30 SD

wildsight: Maplewish did attempt to give the race her best try. Unfortunately, she quickly brushed against something slimy and moving in the water, ew!! The camper bolted back to shore in an instant and raced off into the bushes, some herbs snagging on her fur as she fled. +1 celandine (explore herb)

christine,: Ella swam at the front of the group from the start, determined to win this race. She stayed almost near the lead for quite awhile, until suddenly a fish swam up and bit her paw. Hey, what was that for?! Ella growled at the fish and raced after it instead. By the time she had caught the rude aquatic creature, there was no time left for her to win the competition, and she headed back to shore instead. +20 SD

feather ': Kestrelswoop dove into the water right on Birchmist's signal. While he kept swimming consistently and uninterrupted the whole time, he never quite made it to the lead. Soon enough, he had finished the race, and Birchmist approached to offer him some items as a prize. +blackhole, +30 SD

faelyn: Alora's plan worked out pretty well at first, but about three-quarters of the way through the race she felt herself running out of energy, and called out for help to ensure she followed through with points 1 and 3. Fennel dove right in to help the struggling cat, and before long she was safely back on shore. Technically, she didn't drown, and there were cats who dropped out earlier than her, so.. her plan did work, sorta? Fennel chuckled at that, and offered Alora a bit of stardust to cheer her up. +10 SD
