what makes their heart happy?; Their cat Spud!

Solitude. A cold and lonely thing. Pan looked into the sky, trickles of cold powder rained down, chilling him to his core. His ragged clothing gave no relief from the icy weather but at least it provided some barrier from his heart. Chilling. Just like every winter before. Those cozy houses with their bright lights, warm laughter and cozy food, all things he could only dream of having. This was his life, a lonely and cold life. He sat watching as the final strands of sun disappeared as the biting night took hold, he heard a growling, his stomach crying out, yet he just lay. Lay in the same position not wanting to waste any energy in unnecessary movement, after all there was no way to get food during the night only when the sun broke and the people came out did he earn a morsel. Most was out of pity, if pity could keep him alive he would take it.
So like this the night went on hunger preventing him from slumber, then he heard it, a mewling, a small kitten's whine. He at first ignored it but eventually could not help his curiosity, between some damp boxes lay a kitten. An ugly thing it was, scars littering its body, dull blue eyes likely blind. Most likely due to this it was abandoned… just like him. He looked for some time, thinking, hesitating, wondering, but in the end he scooped the small body up. He did not have enough food of his own and did not know how he would keep the small kitten alive but nevertheless he could not help but take it. Perhaps it was a sense of kinship or maybe an ounce of pity, one that could keep them alive but no matter, he wanted to care for it so he would.
This was Pan's wisest choice he ever made, saving the small kitten, he not only gave it a chance in life but gave himself a reason for living. He found odd jobs, small things to do, he got new clothes, warm food, all of this to keep the kitten alive. It was hard, but never as hard as being alone starving in the cold winter, it was tiring but never as tiring as having no reason to live. His life started revolving around keeping the kitten alive and eventually at some point it began revolving around having a good life, not just the kitten but himself too. Their cat Spud started their heart again, they began his life again, so when he thought of Spud it could not help but make his heart happy.
