Name: Desert Harbor's Canes Venatici || Chara
Gender: Female
Height: 19 in
Weight: 40 lbs
Color: Blue Based Freckled Silver Eryth Agouti Cryptic Merle Minimal White
Genotype: awaw BB cchce dd efer hh Ii kyky McMa Ssi tt Uu lwlw
--
What's this? A new breed specific gene?
Freckled presents as efef, efe, or efer.
all genotypes result in a freckling of the base color on a recessive red or eryth coat. efef freckles the face, chest, back, and paw areas while efe freckles mainly the face, with the possibility of some freckling along the back or chest. efer has the same range of freckling as efef along an eryth coat.
This pup's got enough freckles to trace out several constellations - they deserve a starry name and story to match their looks! Write a short story (50-500 words) about their relationship with the stars, and give them a matching name having to do with stars/the sky.
Ends 5/20

Name: Orion
Name Meaning: (optional)
Gender: Male
Prompt: A warm summer night, the wind cool yet warm was blowing through Orion's fur as his head hung out the window of the car. Soon the wind was slowing down as the car pulled over onto a lone gravel road surrounded by tall, thick pine trees. Orion soon heard the familiar click as the was pulled open. His tail wagging, he started off nose to the ground, enjoying the new smells that he was picking up. A whistle echoed through the night, one Orion was familiar with. Trotting over towards his human, tongue hanging out he soon felt a rough hand stroke through his fur. Suddenly the smell of salt pricked Orion's nose, and he peered up at his human and realised they were crying. Giving small licks of reassurance, a gravelly but saddened voice whispered "I'm so sorry boy". As his human walked away the sound of crunching gravel grew fainter with each step. Soon the sound of the car growled to life before it slowly disappeared. Orion confused to where his own went, he gazed upon the stars 'Is this my fate', he pondered. He soon set of in search for shelter following the north star which was bright against the night sky. Through thick shrub and leafy debris it was no easier task to navigate the thick pine forests. On a few occasions Orion lost sight of the North Star and panic flowed through his veins fearing he would be lost forever. Feeling weak, he stopped by a river in his path and taking a well needed drink. He gazed at the night sky and soon a sorrow filled howl stretched throughout the forest. He stretched his muscle feeling a renewed energy course through his veins he set off in hopes of a warm place for the night. Stopping by a fence line he peered up at the skies hoping for a flicker of hope and upon noticing was about to give up. As he lowered his gaze, he noticed that across the horizon and beyond the fence line was a small light flicker through the night. His tailed swished through the grass, causing dust to fly up. Squeezing through the sharp wired fence he started to run the cool breeze whipping through his fur. Grass and dust was kicked up as he sprinted towards the light hoping his eyes weren't playing any tricks. Soon the solitary light became many and the silhouette of a house rose from the ground. Slowing down he glanced at the sky as the stars danced in the shadowless sky, as he whispered a heartfelt "Thank you". Cautiously he ambled towards the house to see a lone person sitting on the grass. Orion wandered over to the lone person, and the two sat together staring at the night sky. As Orion glanced up at the stars as they seemed to stretch for Infinity, he felt a wave of happiness embrace him. The stars led him to his new forever home. (498 words)

Name: Desert Harbor's Canes Venatici || Chara
Name Meaning:
The Polish astronomer Johannes Hevelius formed the constellation Canes Venatici in 1687 from a scattering of faint stars beneath the tail of Ursa Major. Canes Venatici represents a pair of greyhounds held on a lead by Boötes (another constellation), snapping at the heels of the Great Bear (Ursa Major). Hevelius named the dogs Asterion and Chara, identifying them as male and female respectively.
Gender: Female
Prompt: "I will always be with you, my dear. When you feel most alone, look up at the stars and you'll see me smiling down at you." A raspy breath, "I love you." Then, silence.
Chara couldn't believe it. Her heart hammered in her chest as her breathing came to a near stop. Then, panic settled in- pulling her down into the floor, attempting to swallow her whole as she frantically tried to get to her human. No, no, no, no! The only thing she could hear was the blooding running in her veins, drowning out all other sounds as she fought against the hands grabbing her. How dare they? Her human needed her! Suddenly she was lifted into the air, her legs dangling helplessly as she whimpered. A soft hand stroked her fur as a head buried into the fur on her neck. A soft voice whispering against her, muffled. Finally, Chara came to, looking around the room and realizing where she was. The strong smell of cleanliness, medicine, and sickness lingered in the air. Oh. They were in a hospital.
The warm body she was pressed against was shivering. Concern flooded her as she wriggled in their grasp, attempting to find a way to lick their face- to get rid of the salty tears that leaked from their eyes and onto her fur. The smell of her human made her stomach drop, filling it with a heavy stone as realization dawned on her. Amelia was gone. Who was holding her? Chara once again squirmed, letting out a desperate whine, which finally caught the human's attention. A second later they sat down, still holding onto Chara as if their life depended on it. Dad. Chara nuzzled up against the man's chest. She lost track of time, but they sat there for what felt like an eternity.
The night after Amelia's funeral, Chara found herself sitting on the porch outside, staring up at the night sky with longing eyes. Was Amelia really up there right now? Could she see her? Her human never lied, she was there somewhere, Chara just needed to find her. Too lost in thought, the collie didn't notice the wooden porch creak with each step that her father took.
"I like to believe that she's the brightest star in the sky."
That made Chara's tail wag, her gaze breaking from the sky to look over to him. The man smiled, taking a seat beside her, his hand finding its way to her neck, softly running his fingers through her fur. With his free hand he pointed out one vivid star, showing Chara what he saw. Amelia was the brightest soul either of them had ever met, so of course she would be the brightest star in the sky!
When you feel most alone, look up at the stars and you'll see me smiling down at you.

Name: Perseus
Name Meaning: One of the 88 modern constellations, it's named after the Greek hero and was first catalogued by Greek astronomer Ptolemy.
Gender: Male
Prompt: Ever since he was a pup, Perseus has been fascinated by the twinkling lights in the night sky known as stars. He'd often spend all night watching and counting the stars when he should have been sleeping. He spent so much time observing them, that he eventually learned their patterns of movement across the sky. Today, he can name every single constellation and identify every star that makes up each one. He doesn't just like observing them, however. It's his dream to one day go to space and visit the stars himself. He may not be the first dog in space, but he will be the one to travel the farthest.

Name: SM's Dead Reckoning//Polaris
Name Meaning:
show name: the process of calculating current position of a moving object using a previously determined position, often by way of stars.
call name: another name for the north star, famous for holding mostly still while the rest of the northern sky moves around it.
Gender: Female
Prompt:
[272/500]
"No matter where you find yourself, the stars will always lead you home."
Polaris repeated her father's words to herself as she stood squarely in the middle of, well...she didn't know where. The collie had wandered off after an intense training session in the fields. Now she was surrounded by trees she didn't recognize, grass that didn't smell like home, sheep who didn't know her. The only familiarity she found was above her head, shining brightly against an impossibly dark sky.
The stars were Polaris' friends.
They always seemed to know exactly where the dog needed to be. She didn't question it when Orion offered the best route to chase squirrels. The Ursas? They showed Polaris the most wonderful views from high places. Cassiopeia knew how to find new friends. Pegasus kept Polaris on her toes with challenges to race. Each of these cosmic comrades held a special place in the collie's heart. Her panic at becoming lost didn't last very long. She found her namesake in the sea of stars above and then took off after it.
Pushing through the brush, Polaris was homebound. She paid no mind to the landmarks that she ran past. Her stars would always guide her home, so she had no need to remember anything.
True to form, Polaris skidded to a halt in front of her house. She grinned as she padded up the steps and pushed her way through the doggy door. The stars had led her home. Polaris settled down in her bed next to the large living room window. She looked outside at the night sky, stifling a yawn.
"Thank you, stars."
