what is their relationship like?
"What if we opened a record store?" had been Desmond's words when Oxford was in his first year of college, and that night when they let their imaginations take them away little did they know that was exactly what they would end up doing. Walls full to the brim with records, $1-2 bins of assorted records, a cosy back room for coffee breaks and music constantly playing in the background, it would be perfect.
Similar discussions continued to crop up and as Oxford fell in love with a new dream to chase, he lost interest in his architecture course. By the end of the year, Oxford had dropped out to begin searching for a place for their shop, much to his mother's dismay. That moment had brought them to this one on their first official day as owners of the building that would soon become "Sun&Moon Records".
The old bell chimed as Oxford stepped through the door to greet Desmond who was already there looking around at the empty shell of a building left behind by its previous owners. It had most likely already been a record shop in its past judging by the pieces of shattered vinyls across the floor.
"Hey Des!" he said cheerily, placing the shopping bags packed with cleaning supplies on the chipped counter.
"Hey 'Ford!" Desmond replied, offering a grin in return as their eyes met and Oxford found himself holding his gaze. Another chiming from the bell announced the arrival of a young lady who nervously stuck her head around the doorframe, ruining the moment.
"Come in!" he called, "It's all still a work in progress but you're welcome to have a look inside!"
Desmond caught his eye from across the room and rolled his jokingly eyes at Oxford's friendliness before he asked: "Did you buy the stuff?"
"Yes! Here, catch," he warned and tossed a packet of disinfectant wipes towards Desmond, who caught them perfectly and ripped open the packet.
The lady, who had observed their interaction, made her way over to Oxford and whispered "Your boyfriend's pretty cute!"
"Oh we're just friends!" he explained, cringing slightly at his words. Oxford did want to be something more, but Desmond could never know that.
She raised an eyebrow at him and something like disbelief crossed her face but he chose to ignore it because what he had said was true. They were just friends and they had been ever since school, too long in fact for there being any chance of Desmond feeling the same way. If something was going to happen between them it would have happened, so Oxford swallowed his feelings and carried on clearing up the concrete floor as the lady wandered around. He stole a look at Desmond who was cleaning the crates that would hold records and couldn't help the sense of admiration that swelled in him. The way his forehead scrunched up when he was concentrating... he shook it off; it was time to get to work.
