Day 22Username: Shuurock
Clan link:The PridePrompt:Sticky dropped the white vole at Lion’s feet. “I’ve no idea why but this vole is pure white, you think the voles have winter coats and that’s why we haven’t been able to find them?”
Lion let out a scoff, “Sticky. Voles don’t do that. This one is just albino.” She sniffed at the prey, “and a weird smelling one at that! Where did you find this?”
“Mnnn same place I find everything, near the human trash heap.”
She backed away from the small prey mouth in a perfect frown, “I don’t like the sound of that. Pearl, is there anything where you’re from about albino prey? Feels like bad luck!”
Pearl was staring at the animal fur sticking up, “I definitely wouldn’t say it’s good luck. I… I don’t know. Maybe an omen.”
Clearly there was something she wasn’t letting on and Lion didn’t have time for her to beat around the bush if they had something that would ruin their luck or upset the spirits. She stepped forward meeting Pearl’s gaze, “You’ve got to tell me what kind of omen, I’m not getting cursed today!”
Pearl shook her head, “it’s nothing like that! It just… usually if it’s seen it’s left alone. If it’s caught it’s given a proper burial, usually it’s a sign that someone in the group is… is being untruthful.” She looked up at Lion eyes pleading.
Lion took in a deep breath, she knew about Pearl’s feigned amnesia for some time now, the way she acted gave it away. She remembered far too many details to not remember where she came from, but Lion didn’t know why Pearl would lie about it and keep it going for so long. She wanted to wait until Pearl herself was comfortable enough to tell her, but maybe this was a sign it had been long enough. “Well, do you know anyone who’s been untruthful?”
Suddenly Pearl straightened her tail curling around her tightly, “U-untruthful… well. No. Maybe.” Her eyes flashed back and forth trying to read Lion’s expression, however Lion made sure to stay neutral. She took a deep breath, “I have Lion, I don’t actually have amnesia. I’m sorry for lying. I didn't mean for it to go on for so long.”
Lion’s shoulders relaxed and she bowed her head, “I’m sorry for making you confess like that. To be truthful I have known, but I wanted to hear it straight from you. I want you to know that you can trust me Pearl, I don’t care where you come from or what you’ve done, I trust you,”
Pearl bowed her head slightly, “I apologize for not trusting you Lion, but I’ve done something truely evil. I,” she looked down at her paws, “I’ve used my claws to kill. I can’t be trusted!”
“Woah! Woah, Pearl are you serious?” Sticky interjected finally after they had properly buried the white vole, “You couldn’t hurt a fly, we’ve been with you for a while now there’s no way!”
“You don’t know me, Sticky! You only know me I was willing to show you!” Pearl hissed softly.
“Why did you do it Pearl? Surely… you had a good reason to do it?”
“There is never a good reason to kill, I’ve been taught that my whole life. Even if your mate is in danger, I shouldn’t have killed him.” She remembered the moment vividly, protecting Granite was all she wanted, she didn’t want to kill an innocent cat like that.
“Pearl. Are you saying you were protecting your loved ones and that’s what brought you to doing it?”
Pearl looked up, surprised at the softness in Lion’s voice. “I was… but that-“
Lion pushed her paw on hers gently, “You have a great deal of courage Pearl, to protect your loved ones like that. We all have people we would do crazy things for, that doesn’t make us all crazy.” She laughed gently, “You saw me when Sticky got sick… I would have fought the biggest bear to get herbs for them. I’m sure you feel the same about your mate. You didn’t kill for the thrill or petty reasons you did it to protect the ones you love. That’s admirable.”
Tears began to softly pour out of Pearl’s eyes, this secret that she had kept for so long and she thought everyone would hate her for… simply gone in a matter of seconds. She could fully be herself, point out things that the valley cats would do to survive and cultural things she just couldn’t understand why these cats wouldn’t do the same way. “Thank you, Lion. I’ll tell you more about it when I’m able. Let me tell everyone else ok? I want them to hear it from me.” Lion nodded as she gently wiped the tears from Pearl’s cheeks. Things would be different now, but different was good.
