It was the middle of day. It was the middle of town. It shouldn't have been there - and Aileron shouldn't have been either, but had skipped his afternoon hunt to visit his sister's new kits. He shudders to think what would have happened if he didn't.

The coyote's scent hit him first - musk and grass and sun. He saw its eyes first, its sandy fur blending in with the grass around his sister's den. It seemed surprised to see him there. Like a kit caught sneaking out.

Aileron doesn't know how long they started like that, staring at each other. He remembers hearing the kits move in their nest, and the coyote turning towards them, and he remembers his heart stopping. The next moments were a blur of fur and fangs, ending with Aileron panting as he watched the coyote flee.

He remembers the next moment much better, of turning around and seeing his sister's kittens - terrified and confused, but mercifully, blessedly, unharmed. He was trembling as he curled around them. And despite his wounds, he refused to move from their side until his sister's human found them.

Living in the prairie, Aileron had seen coyotes before that. But that, that was the one that shook him to his core, the one that keeps him up at night even today.
