Owner: bunnoblizzard
Cat Name: Gray
Clowder: xxx
Prompt: Gray stared at the horizon, a dim expression plastered across the dark gray brooding tom's face. Nothing had ever been so heavy on his mind before. The piece of hay in his mouth shifted as he chewed on it. "Darn buffalo keep eating my grain." He grumbled to himself, over-looking the great fields of patchy wheat now having messing clumps of dung here and there. Gray didn't live too far from the zoo but had finally decided to move nearer to the she-cats. "Guess it don' matter now. If I'm leaving they can have the doggone grain." He scoffed, simply his way of showing his sadness of leaving his beautiful farm. The she-cats in question? Skye and Avalanche of course. Those two, if you asked Gray, really had a way with words. Well, correction, the white one did. He thought, thinking about her overly excited partner who wouldn't leave her side. Ah well... I best accustom myself to it.
Gray cast one more longing glance over the farm he had raised for three years now. "'Till we meet again, partner." He sighed, grabbing his paw-made leather pouch over his shoulders and under his chest for security. He grabbed the partially ripped brown and white spotted bandana he held dear to him, a treasured heirloom passed down from each of his grandfathers, the original owner said to have been a helpful barn cat for the humans. But that was just a silly, unbelievable myth, Gray had convinced himself. Tying the bandana around his head with careful paws he set off, using the map the two she-cats provided him. He clicked his tongue, for once attempting positive comments as he began the long journey to said abandoned zoo.
Gray had recalled the misty morning when the two young 'uns had shown up. Right at his doorstep, offering him security, safety, a new barn, and three acres of land, just barely away from the zoo. They had brought him a map and some food offerings, which he had found awfully sketchy considering they were offering him a new home, not the other way around. Despite the thoughts of doubt he had in his mind, he gave in to their incredible offer. But... it was something he couldn't turn down after all that had unfortunately happened to him that year. All that could possibly go wrong went wrong. The fields, shortly before the two she-cat's visiting, had become over-run with much too many buffalo and mice, looking for a source of food in the dense grasslands.
Although that was bad enough, there was much worse. Gray, surprisingly, had a mate. Junie, she was called. Or, what he called her. Her real name was Junefly, odd right? Gray didn't mind. In fact, she was seemingly much like Avalanche, quiet and shy but convincing and incredibly sweet. Junefly had been living with Gray since before the farm was established, traveling with him during their youth and early days. It was almost a dream, really, all was wonderful and he had finally found the love of his life after searching for a good while. Someone to lean on and care for.
What he hadn't taken in mind is how fragile that love could be. Even though they had spent so much time together and he had been official mates for so long, they got into a small, pointless, illogical argument which led to more serious arguments which led to the end of their relationship. Gray, already an introverted, reserved tom had become much colder and more likely to lash out. And for good reason too, Junie, the love of his life, fled to wherever she had planned to go, Skies above may know where but he sure didn't. Poor Gray had isolated himself since then, only ever speaking to himself from time to time as if to continue quietly cursing the one he used to call his under his breath as if he assumed she could hear.
It had been several days of constant traveling and looking on the map gifted to him for him to find the abandoned zoo, somewhat interested when he saw the gigantic, maze-like structure stretching out in front of him. He had to cross a large highway that had become nearly entirely swarmed by vines, ivy, moss, bushes, and the occasional tree or two. Approaching the crooked gate he lifted a paw, knocking on it politely. May the Skies have the future in their pools.
