“I’ve heard of you.” Whispered her latest target, gasping for breath as the life bled out of him. “They call you Artemis don’t they? Most ruthless assassin in the east.”

“I don’t make a habit of keeping up with the ridiculous names that are bestowed upon me.” Irene responded idly.

“I don’t know how you live with yourself.” His voice grew harsh. “You’re a monster.”

Irene glanced over her shoulder, eyebrow raised. “A monster? My, my, sounds like you hold a bit of a personal grudge.”

“You killed—my brother. And you laugh off murder like its nothing.” He gasped out, sounding a bit like a dying fish.

Irene snorted. She crouched beside the dying kalon and lifted his head to look her in the eye.

“I’ll let you in on a little secret.” Irene murmured. “I’m not a monster. I’ve simply gotten rid of my need for emotions—sadness, remorse, guilt—for example. I kill because it is nothing. I don’t care, and it pays well.”

She looked down at him with a small, almost pitying frown. “I hate to break it to you, but I don’t remember your brother. And within a few days, I’ll forget you as well.” She gently patted his head and stood.

“Well its been a lovely little chat, but I really must be going.” She cut off his last breaths with a quick slice of her knife and spun on her heel. She did not look back.

“I’ll forget you as well.”

If only that were true.
