Name: Meiri
Prompt: [ 500 / 500 ]
Meiri slumped in his room, trying to sort his emotions. The gods chose to give a power to Khai? To give him the ability to end the war? He couldn't comprehend it. The prophecy had a choice between three royal sons, but in everyone's mind, it was a choice between two. The crown prince Beon, who could eloquently charm crowds, or the second prince, himself, an unmatched leader in battle. Khai, the third prince, lacked such achievements, preferring to read instead. Between an orator, a general, and a recluse, the choice was obvious: Beon could negotiate an excellent treaty, or Meiri could wipe out the enemy. A scholar had no role in war.
Yet mere hours ago, the heavens voiced their decision: they will bless Prince Khai. The dining hall was dead silent as the attending nobles and the royal family processed what was said. Khai...Khai over Beon? Over Meiri? The nobody over two brothers with vast potential? Meiri could admit that even if he cared for Khai, this felt like an insult. If it were Beon he would have celebrated, perhaps made some jokes about his disappointment, but for Khai...what could he have said besides just leaving?
Meiri sat up, slamming his hands on the table in front of him. No. He knew his brother well, and even if he felt slighted from this revelation, Khai was the most hurt. His introverted brother hated being the center of attention, and he always pretended to be indifferent about criticisms hurled at him. But Meiri knew otherwise. It couldn't have been easy living in the shadow of two older siblings, being constantly compared to them, constantly ignored. When his two brothers stormed out of the dining hall, it must have broken his heart. He must have thought they would never speak to him again. And the citizens, who already scoff at the academic, would be even harsher now that he was the blessed. Khai's life would turn from the ignored to the scorned.
But Meiri could change this, because he realised something. Khai being the chosen didn't mean he was inferior. Beon was still the charming mediator. He was still a fierce commander. What changed was Khai, once the 'lesser' prince, now had an opportunity to display his talents. The people needed to give him a chance, and as one of the more popular princes, Meiri could give him that chance. He had to speak to the crowds, and tell them that they cannot criticize his brother without first seeing what he will achieve. That it was pointless to compare princes when each had different strengths.
Firstly, however, he should reach out to Khai and apologize for marching out of the hall in cold silence. To say that he would never cease contact over something as petty as jealousy. And say that he had a revelation.
Maybe the reason why he had so many achievements, had so many admirers, was for this. To use it all in support of his brother.
