Now, don't get me wrong. These two are not mates, far from it! Ciderstep has never been interested in toms, and Skippingstone never in she cats. BUT. They're having kits together, mostly for one reason and one reason alone- they both WANT kits. Ciderstep's reasoning is... well... dubiously okay. She wants to see what it would be like to go through pregnancy and motherhood herself, after having helped so many queens give birth and watch them all raise their kits in the nursery. She finds the whole process fascinating, and having never been one to particulary care too deeply about other cats, she sees her close relationship with her own adoptive father, Coffeebean, and wonders if having kits of her own will create children she cares about so deeply as well.
Skippingstone, on the other hand, never knew his own parents. There are no memories in his head of a mother or a father, only of cold streets and gutters, digging in trash cans and having twoleg kits and their families take pity on his strange appearance. He wants to have children, though. He thinks it would be nice to have children to pass on his knowledge to, to have a family to care for. Maybe one day he'll find a mate, but that day is not today.
"Why don't you ask Ciderstep?" Was the first response to his long sigh about wanting kits but not a mate.
"Ciderstep?" He asked, almost offended. The strange doctor had never been one of his favorite cats- she was strange, asked too many questions, and never shut up. "I don't think she'd be open to the idea. Doesn't she have patients to heal?"
"There are plenty of doctors," Bellleap laughed, "she's just one of them! Plus, she's been talking about wanting to 'experiment' by having kits of her own lately."
"Experiment?"
"Experiment! She says she wants to know what it's like to carry kits and raise them."
He wasn't sure he liked that idea. "Any other cats looking to start families?"
"Well yes, but they all have mates that they'd have to ask first."
"Mates..." He scoffed. "I don't really believe in those. True love, love at first sight, it's ridiculous."
"Wouldnt you love your kits, though?"
"That's different. Familial love is something... something i'd like."
"Romantic love isnt all that bad," Bellleap laughed, a loud purr erupting from his chest. "Maybe one day you and Ciderstep will fall in love after having ktis together!"
"I don't-" Skippingstone sighed and dropped his head. "Is she in camp, today?"
"She should be in her den!" Bellleap nodded, rising to his feet. "I can take you there, if you like."
"NO!-" He jumped out of his fur, before settling back down and licking his shoulder. "I can do it myself. I'd prefer to go alone lest- lest i-"
"Lest you embaress yourself if she says no?"
"...Maybe."
"Then i won't stop you."
And just Skippingstones luck, the doctor was in her den- and she said yes!
