Prompt:
When born, Wraith was just as her namesake. A pale, thin, insubstantial wisp of a newborn. Light grey and silent. No one, including her mom, thought she would live. To increase her siblings chances of survival, the mom pushed the poor weak pup aside. Even starving, the young pup never even uttered a whimper. Quickly, she began to feel her strength weaken. All of a sudden, a new presence was beside her.
Going about his duties, Death approached the pale thing on the ground. He let out a sigh as he reached down to collect the pup. It's not even crying, must've died before I could even get here he thought. As his finger tips brushed the damp fur, he quickly recoiled in surprise! What's this! A heartbeat! Death had never seen a creature so close to death and yet with a spirit so strong! Though clearly about to pass away, the small pup silently wriggled towards Death. He reach down again but before he could touch the puppy to put it out of its misery, it licked him! And licked again! Never before had a creature licked him! Most tried to escape their inevitable death, or occasionally, embraced with open arms if they were ready leave this world. Never had a thing been happy to see him and still have a desire to live. The usual stoic and impartial Death did a very peculiar thing. He let the little thing live.
The pup didn't escape unchanged by Death's touch though. Her coat took on a smokey white, almost translucent look. And when her eyes finally opened a few days after her siblings, they were clouded and milky white.
When she was old enough, Wraith told her sibling about her encounter with Death. They didn't believe but her blindness and strange appearance were enough for them to avoid her. Despite this, Wraith never grew hateful or spiteful. She liked being alone. Though even when no one was around, it often seemed like Wraith was talking to and playing with someone no one else could see.
In defiance of her blindness, Wraith moved with grace and near silence. She never seemed to run into things and at times it truly seemed like she could see. Regardless of how she was treated by those around her, she's always kind to others. She's able to calm and soothe those around her, especially those close to death.
And there are still times she prances about in joy as if seeing an old friend no one else can detect.
