The trailer rumbled down the dirt path towards the pasture before coming to a slow halt. The driver stepped out and handed me some documents to sign before unlatching the trailer door. Loud thumps and anxious cries could be heard. The driver gently coaxed out a mare with blinds covering her eyes. I stared in awe at her giraffe-patterned body. She was even more stunning in person.
I handed the documents back and gently called her into the pasture before taking out the blinds. She struggles a bit but ultimately shrugged it off. The moment her eyes adjusted to the lights, she bolted off into the pasture.
Over the course of a few weeks, I would spend as much time as I could with Viridian. She had grown accustomed to my company and wasn’t as jumpy. Now, she was willing to come up to me for a few pets and treats before bolting off again. One thing I quickly realised was that she was extremely fast. Maybe she’d have potential in competitions.
I had called a vet down for Viridian’s first vet check. I had her accustomed by leading her to the stall and running my hands across her body as a start. When the vet came to check on her, she was a bit nervous but aside from pinned ears and some anxious whinnies, she did well and was considered healthy. The scars left behind by a rough exchange with a big cat healed well and doesn’t need any more medication.
After the vet left, I led Viridian to the showering station where I gave her a good bath and groom which she took to extremely well. The following day was her first farrier appointment which again, she was nervous about but eased into it after a bit of coaxing and leaves.
It had been a few months since Viridian first stepped foot into the stables and she has made big improvements. While she was still a bit nervous around strangers, it wouldn’t affect her as much and she’d warm up to them soon enough. Her feathers and coat became shinier and healthier. Viridian started to show her personality and she proved to be quite the sassy mare. While she can be rather fussy with little things like feeding her on time or receive her side eye, one thing never changed. Viridian absolutely loves eating leaves. No leafy greens are safe from her.
Viridian enjoys eating all sorts of greens and it was how we bonded. Everyday, I’d feed her a new or unique green that I’d find at the grocery or grow in the little farm behind the house. Of the greens that she had eaten so far, kales seem to be her favourite.
While it took a bit of patience, Viridian came around quickly and has grown very accustomed to living here. I’m hoping to possibly ride her soon enough.
