Off the side of the old riding trail laid a small clearing Remus had set up camp at, and now, with the stars above him and gentle glow from the half-moon, he could see the fluffy face of a small little dog on the edge of the clearing. It didn’t bark or growl, and from his spot, he couldn’t see much of it. Nearby, he heard the snort from Spectre, the untrusting stallion tied loosely to a tree nearby for the night. It seemed he’d heard the dog already, but didn’t perceive them as a threat. That was at least a little reassuring… Emerging from the tent, Remus crept over and knelt watching the dog’s eyes as it stared back.
“Hello there..” The dog blinked, then gave the outstretched hand a sniff. Then, just turned and started walking into the bushes. Remus found that strange, but his curiosity was peaked, so with a glance at Spectre, who seemed mostly relaxed still, he followed the dog into the woods. The way they traveled seemed much more wild, tangling plants around his feet and the smell of untouched herbs he resisted the urge to pick. Before he knew it, they were in another clearing. While it had not been something that had first been easy to notice, it was startling now that it had fully caught Remus’ attention. A dip that was much deeper than he thought, a horse laid on its side at the bottom, so skinny his hips jutted from his sides, and ribs were achingly easy to see. Remus eased his way closer, gently talking when the horse grunted and picked up his head to watch him. The poor thing… He was clearly a stallion, but was so docile that he let Remus kneel at his side, taking the apple in his hand so easy. Perhaps he’d just been unwanted and that was someone’s excuse to dump him, though it didn’t explain his skinniness…. Maybe a sickness..?
Remus called a vet to get him taken care of, going back to camp to retrieve his gear and horse and coming back to watch him until the vet came. Surprisingly, it seemed that even the grumpy Spectre liked him. It turned out that a mix of lameness and an infection of tapeworms that were untreated left him weak. Remus took him home and nursed him back to health and Spitz, unhelpfully, demanded to be near to their friend, though Remus was cautious that he also be heavily treated for tapeworms just in case. He was also skinny, but Remus was more worried about infection since the pup hadn’t gotten it already. Remus had somehow gained more family, and he refused to let them go so uncared for or unloved ever again.
