Pantherkit watched as Archfern and his mother spoke in hushed tones. Had he done something wrong? Pantherkit couldn't quite remember. The young tom was jolted from his thoughts as his father, Raggedstream, joined his mother and the current soul-guardian. They cast a concerned look in his direction, which did little to calm the nerves that ricocheted through the small tom. All he had done was go near the soul tree, was he not supposed to do that? He couldn't remember what he had done, but clearly it was something big enough that both of his parents had to talk to archfern immediately, and it was a conversation he couldn't be apart of.

Archfern turned then, moving towards the young kit with a smile that was not unkind.

"Hello Pantherkit." he spoke softly, crouching down to get at eye-level with the fluffy child. "I heard you had a little adventure earlier. Can you show me where you went?" he asked, a playful gleam in his eye. Was that what this was? A game? Pantherkit liked games, and so the little kit nodded enthusiastically, rising and bounding out of the soul-guardian's alcove with a grin as wide as the moon overhead. He could hear Archfern and his parents following quietly behind, but they said nothing as Pantherkit wound his way through the foliage, back to the soul tree. Once again pantherkit could hear the whispers, could feel the prickly gazes of soul-cats wandering the area. Once again he felt the tug towards the tree, this time, instead of running from it in terror, he followed the tug like some invisible string was tied to him, he let it pull him in. He was lost in the connection, and didn't even notice his parents, or archfern calling his name. It was only then that he realized: he was glowing! Strange markings down his paws and on his sides. They matched the glow of the pawprints on the soul tree, and he turned to see his parents, and archfern, smiling broadly.

"Pantherkit, the soul tree has chosen your purpose!" Archfern whispered softly, his eyes alight with happiness.

"You will be the next soul-guardian."

𝐃𝐎𝐔𝐁𝐓𝐒 𝐅𝐄𝐃 𝐎𝐍 𝐈𝐍𝐒𝐄𝐂𝐔𝐑𝐈𝐓𝐘

As Pantherfang grew, so did his connection to the soul tree. Archfern taught him everything he needed to know, and in many ways Archfern became more of a father to Pantherfang than his own father was to him. Pantherfang grew to learn to communicate with the spirits, to bless them, and to give them peace so that they may finally pass on from this realm. He learnt just how dangerous this position was, and that although he didn't have a choice (the tree had chosen for him) the tree was never wrong.

Pantherfang doubted this, very frequently. Oftentimes wondering if he would ever be able to live up to the legacy Archfern had created. He wanted so desperately to be a good soul-guardian, to give the cats both living and dead their peace, that it often made him sick with worry and sorrow. His biggest accomplishment was both a blessing and a curse. After all, being the mediator between life and death was troublesome work.

but regardless of his qualms, nothing could have prepared him for the trust his clanmates put in him. They trusted him and were forgiving of his mistakes. The tree was temperamental, and he was in charge of keeping it under control and appeased through offerings, prayers and sacrifices. If things got too low for the tree's liking.. well the very territory of drizzleclan would shake and it would be up to pantherfang to put the tree back to sleep and once again restore the balance. Without pantherfang, drizzleclan might well be consumed by the very thing it worshiped. That was the scariest thought, of all the lives riding on him, but as time wore on he learned to shoulder that burden alongside all the others. He was strong, he was the soul guardian, a walker of death and a mediator between life and the other side. He could handle an obstinate tree outburst (well, most of the time he could handle a tree outburst. oftentimes the tree would behave like a child, and pantherfang would be resentful he was chosen for the role of a glorified kitsitter...)

He wandered through an open field, a field he had never seen before.. it looked nothing like the fields the healers gathered their herbs from. He turned a circle, smelling for anyone he knew, but none came. The wind buffeted his mane of fur, and he shook it, his half-gaze flashing about. This whole thing felt wrong somehow, it deeply unsettled him. This was no normal dream..

A murder of crows broke from the tree line to his left, their piercing calls drowning out all noise, and he nearly leapt out of his skin. The sky turned a deep crimson, the birds began to circle overhead and now Pantherfang was really unsettled. He let out a cry of surprise when the shadow form of a cat, with smoldering eyes approached him. The voice was like a whisper in the wind, but it chilled him to the bone nonetheless.

Wrought of fog and thistle high
Full moon climbs into midnight sky
      Menacing eyes join thorny claws
      Broken-tide gaze, Slobbering Jaws

Be still by the sight of the waning bloodmoon
For the same bird sings but changes his tune
Midnight eyes see all and nothing
      Loyalties shift, the other becoming

      Deep beneath the wilting alder,
One heart breaks, one’s on the altar

For a long moment pantherfang stood and watched the shadow cat, as it finished it's incantation. He thought he was going to be sick. Then the cat lunged at him, his snapping jaws inches from the burly tom's face as he lurched awake in his nest. He nearly howled aloud as he lurched upright, fur standing on end.

His first prophecy.. great. Pantherfang felt himself sigh, both in worry for what that whole dream had meant, and in relief that he was safe in soul-guardian's alcove, safe in his nest.. The tom turned then, watching as the words the shadow-cat had spoken began to scrawl themselves in ominous blue across the far wall.. Pantherfang dipped his head to the words. A prophecy, a warning, a message he now had to decipher,

he wasn't going to get back to sleep was he..

Cat Name: lion’s mighty roar (lion)
    Gender: tom
    Rank: marsh walker
    Clan: fogclan
    Age: eight years
    Prompt:
“lion,” the voice echoed. “you’ll be the medicine cat of the marsh walkers. like our kin before us, you just have to for the sake of our kin.” his eyes fluttered open from the dream. that’s what he’s always been known for his whole life as the kin to past medicine cats and ceremonial leaders along with being the youngest member to the oldest family in the marsh walkers. these were chains that hung from his paws throughout his entire life. no cat paid attention to how or who he was, just the kin who he came from. he’s run away from these problems multiple times yet they still haunt him. he just wished to break free and forget from these pressures yet couldn’t.

his pelt which he was named for hung heavier than usual as he stepped from his den. this is what kept all eyes on him. cats often assumed a rough nature while looking at him, but this thick black pelt that got him to where he was in his group. a prophecy of his jet-black mane pointed to him being the next medicine cat. being a medicine cat is what his kin wanted, but for himself, he can’t be truly happy within it. but, he can’t change the past.

his long strides carried him with pride and confidence across the clearing towards the marshes. they wanted a medicine cat who could be confident within their role, and that’s what they got with him. he took up this role with what he could even though he hated it. he already took care of what needed to be done for the day with sending out hunting patrols, no sick or injured cats needed attention, and he already sent cats to training for the day. so, today was for him.

dipping into the cold waters below, he felt his paws leave the ground as he pushed off. this is what he lived for within the marsh walkers was when he got the time to explore his marshy home alone. this always brought him back to before his medicine cat training when he was supposed to be a scout for fogclan. however, according to starclan, he was forcefully dragged back to fulfill his medicine cat destiny. this exploration was ripped from him even though it was what he wanted. but, the marsh walkers had to come first for him that day. yet, today would be one to fulfill his inner desires.

the water was murky yet flowed nicely against his large pelt. the branches hung overhead as he swam along. the sun light poked through the leaves, bathing him in warm when he hit them. it would be a nice day to swim. however, he had only one thing in mind for this day, but that would have to wait until dusk.

reaching the far side of the marshes, it was about sunset as he reached the shore. it was fun being able to escape for the day without caring about his role. this is what he wanted as a scout, to be free from his chains in a new setting. but, that was the past and there’s no going against it now. his paws batted at the ground. “mousebrain, you need to stop thing about that. it’s time to forget,” he murmured to himself. he can’t keep blaming himself for everything even as starclan’s words couldn’t be opposed, according to what the past medicine cat said to him after lion attempted to run away. that’s what always happened when he questioned his role, to just have faith in starclan as it’s what they wanted. that was all mousebrained for a group who never fully trusted in starclan’s word.

his paws thundered against the forest floor as his mind raced with the “what if’s.” the role of medicine cat wasn’t for him yet there was what he was looking for. the beach at dusk was what he looking for. this was the one thing that he wanted to see, the crabs marching down the beach. it was what brought him comfort and peace when his mind was flooded with this kind of stuff. it reminded him of his training and the friends he made within the main fogclan.

the crabs started to march along the beach as he went down. there was one crab who led the march down the beach with the others following behind. much like him, it seemed uncertain in his movements but wouldn’t back track. then, it hit him. even though he didn’t feel the sense of comfort nor desire in his role, he could at least do his best to guide them and change the future of the marsh walkers for the better to ensure another cat would end up like him. that’s what the medicine cat role means for him and what he supposed to do with it without making it solely about what it has been.
