Entry 1

Postby Medd » Wed Aug 04, 2021 3:12 am

I know I said I'd give the phenotypes a go but I can't really distinguish what this one would be?
I was going for grullo tobiano originally

I'm trying to look at charts and stuff to get a better understanding of base coats

Got mane and tail edits and a slight roman nose

Phenotype: Grullo tobiano
Genotype: Ee aa DD Toto

This would be a bay dun tobiano :) at least that's what it looks like to me

The mane on this kid is so spicy, I love it!

I'd say this is a decent go at a very light grullo tobiano! Bay duns are a lot more red/brown and much more saturated than a grullo would be. This kid has enough yellow tones you could maybe call them a sooty dunalino tobiano if you so chose but I think they look grullo enough.
Some tips for grullo is they tend to be a lil less saturated because it's dun dilution over a black base. I usually aim for the red/brown range of colour and almost straight up grey but a slight touch of saturation so they're a lil more warm. But artist interpretation can easily account for some more unique kids so I'd still totally call them a grullo if you wanted to.

Genes for a Grullo would be - Ee aa Dd Toto
You can also choose to do two copies of eumelanin, dun, or tobiano - EE aa DD ToTo
or mix and match as long as they have no copies of agouti

For reference if you chose to swap the pheno
a dunalino would be - ee aa Crcr Dd Toto
Can have any mix of agouti and can also have two copies of dun and tobiano - ee AAt Crcr DD ToTo
can also mix and match as long as they have no copies of eumelanin and just one copy to cream.

Right so I did a lot more looking into genetics before I responded to this and I’m glad I did because it makes so much more sense now than it did at first glance 😂 thank you so much for the advice and help, it’s really useful for someone trying to grasp genetics like me! I will keep them as a grullo but I’ll keep in mind they’re quite yellowish and shouldn’t be quite as vibrant. I’ll go ahead and edit their genotype to suit, thank you again for your help!
