Range Trotters are the result of crossbreeding Orlov Trotters, Finnhorses, Welsh Cobs (section C & D) and Hanoverians. Later crosses of Quarter Horses, Paint and Appaloosas to gain color and to give a boost to their hardiness.With a height average of 13-15 hands, they're a hardy breed with characteristics for various disciplines.

Created for use as work, carriage and leisure riding horses originally, they now serve as long-distance range horses, such as work with Park Rangers and mounted officers.

Willing and eager personalities, most are quickly trained to be bombproof and therefore trusted mounts in all lines of work; some are being seen in local show jumping competitions, others are notably used in therapeutic sessions for their calm temperaments. Harness races and endurance trials are common for the breed, as they are able to sustain an extended trot without tire. Cross-Country competitions see some of the taller Trotters, but due to their cob lineage this is still uncommon.

Despite the variety of competitions and work these horses are being seen in, they are still famously skilled as endurance racers. Many competitors have chosen Range Trotters due to their tireless work ethic, as well as the ease in which they can be trained. Many have become champions in endurance trials, and they have quickly become a sought after breed for their natural ability.

“Make her pick up those feet, Jasmine!” A gruff woman bellowed over the thunder that pealed overhead; come rain or shine, the trials weren’t going to wait for anyone to stop just because of some bad weather. Meredith didn’t care if it was snowing; if you could keep warm with your gear, you could train. If your horse spooked, you could teach them that the weather was nothing to balk at. Humanely, of course. These horses weren’t cheap, she knew, but a little harsh weather never really hurt anyone.

“Mer, she won’t listen! I think the thunder is scaring her!” The teenager called from across the muddied ring, face pale as if she were the one scared.

Meredith didn’t hesitate to call her out on it, either. “Is she the one who’s scared, or is it you tensing up whenever you hear it?” Trudging over to the two, she held a hand out for the reins, Jasmine biting her lip before giving them to the stables’ dressage trainer and dismounting. She nearly slipped on the muddy ground, but Meredith steadied her before springing up into the saddle herself.

And Jasmine watched as the anxious mare settled without a fuss, her bright coat dingy from the mud. But the young mare hadn’t a care in the world as Meredith ran her through her paces, not bothering with any actual dressage training but instead just taking her around the oval shaped ring to make sure she wasn’t in need of more ground schooling. Of course Jasmine knew she didn’t, Celia was a doll despite her given shown name.

“Okay, okay, Mer. I get it. Can we try again?” Jasmine asked when Meredith led the mare through a wide, trotting circle around Jasmine. “I’m sorry. I’ll try to keep it under control.”

“No, you won’t. Not purposefully, anyway. Head to the arena and we’ll continue in there, alright? She loves the cold and noise, but you need to learn that you don’t have to work in weather shes inclined to. Don’t cater to her every need, she’s a big girl. And a horse. Not a child.” Meredith said firmly, but gentle in her gruffness. She dismounted and handed the reins to Jasmine, who nodded sheepishly before taking the mare toward the indoor arena on the property. Thunder pealed loudly, and Meredith chuckled as Celia’s head and ears were up in an instant, twitching to and fro before she neighed loudly at the calling storm clouds. Jasmine was less enthused, but waited for Celia to turn her attention away from the storm before heading inside.
