the story of the outlaw wrote:xxxxbefore we dive into the legend of louie, the devil's daughter, the outlaw, we must first take a look at her famed father. he was called bounty hunter (and, amongst friends, dynamo), and there was good reason behind his name - in his time, he won over two million dollars for his incredibly proud owners. for a good amount of time, he was renowned in racing as one of the greatest living racehorses in the country.
xxxxwhat they didn't showcase to the public, however, was dynamo's terrible tendency to violently lash out at handlers and grooms and leave the entire stable scrambling to keep him under control. it seemed as though the only time he was calm was when he was running, which was fine by the owners that kept their distance from him when they weren't posed for a picture in the winner's circle. they could turn a blind eye to his frankly aggressive behavior expressed behind closed doors, for they weren't the ones leaving with broken noses and bruised ribs after attempting to contain him. within the barn and through hushed whispers, his reputation shifted once again and he was often referred to as the devil.
xxxxhe was successful beyond imagination. it seemed as though he could run all day without tiring or even breaking a sweat; his uncanny ability to push himself past feasible limits was what earned him those millions of dollars. after a few years, though, he began to slow down. it seemed to become harder for him to keep such an intense, consistent pace after countless races. at some point, dynamo simply couldn't keep up with younger, healthier competition, and for the first time in his career he placed second.
xxxxa week later, he was killed in a freak accident. it's widely speculated within racing circles, though, that the entire situation seemed a little too coincidental - with the insurance money his death would guarantee his owners, many believe that it wasn't as much of an accident as they have been told.
xxxxbounty hunter left behind an astounding legacy, as well as a new generation of racehorses who had the great stallion's genes pumping through their blood. amongst these hundreds of foals was a filly called louie. she showed great promise from the moment she took her first galloping stride at only a few hours old - it seemed as though dynamo had chosen one of his many little prodigies to carry on his name. and though her mother was carefully selected to be one of the most mild-mannered mares in the group to balance out the stallion's fiery temper, louie, too, would prove herself to be quite the handful.
the story of the outlaw, continued wrote:xxxx"ohh, she's got devil horns," a man's voice laughed. he put a finger on each side of his head as he said so as if to emphasize the visual. "good luck with that one. she'll be just like her father. bastard of a horse, he was. el diablo. broke my wrist, did you know that?"
xxxxit seemed as though the second voice chose to take his question as a rhetorical one, for they didn't answer. "what do you mean, 'she's got devil horns?'" they instead asked, leaning against the wall as they stared into the stall where the newborn filly nursed on her mother. their eyes narrowed as they squinted, studying the foal in an attempt to catch these devil horns the man was talking about before he answered.
xxxx"you don't know? look at her ears," he responded, pointing over the door at her. glancing over his shoulder, he waved at the other, gesturing for them to come stand by him at the door to look at her more closely. "see how they curve in? they're like devil horns. horses with those ears always turn out to be little monsters. look at her, she's got that glint in her eye. just like dynamo."
xxxxthe other person was quiet for a few seconds after he stopped talking, watching the filly closely. "that's just superstition, don't be stupid."
xxxxand perhaps it was simply superstition, but if it was, it must've been quite the coincidence when louie grew into those horns and showed that she was, in fact, the devil's daughter.
xxxxit seemed as though she was everything bounty hunter was and more. at a mere two years old, she followed in the hoofprints of her father exactly - right from the get-go, she was racking up earnings with each new first place race. her success drew the attention of many of racing’s big names, for she was as beautiful as she was a damn good racehorse. it wasn't a surprise to her owners, considering the genes she was practically designed to carry, but it was certainly welcomed.
xxxxit worried the community, though. with the way dynamo and a couple other racehorse's paths abruptly under the supervision of this (nearly infamous) barn, it was concerning to watch a new star start on that same path knowing exactly where it was likely to end. though they’d gotten countless offers for their prize filly, nothing was grand enough for them to be willing to part with something they viewed such a monkey-making machine until a particularly wealthy peer, old and experienced in the racing industry, made an offer for this new, already impressive racehorse that the owners simply couldn't refuse - that offer was likely the reason louie still stands today. without it, nobody can say where she might've ended up if not in the ground.
xxxxshe turned out to be like her father in more ways than just success in her career, though. after a few more races under her new owner’s name, she was retired from racing to preserve her health and seek to give her a more well-rounded, fulfilling life. unfortunately for this barn’s handlers, they were inexperienced with the secretive, destructive other side of dynamo that seemed to pass onto his daughter. she could only be described as wild and uncontrollable, but the older woman who had bought her insisted that she not be deemed aggressive. louie carried her father’s need to run, and without it, she seemed lost and without purpose.
xxxxfrom there, she was sent to the woman’s daughter, who was known as the owner and manager of rehabilitation facility adagio equestrian. it was a controversial move in the racing industry, to seemingly waste the mare’s mostly untapped potential before she even started gaining traction and building a name for herself, but she knew what she was doing - louie’s potential was too great to be burnt up on racing.
xxxxlouie herself seemed to disagree. she was a spitfire stronger than adagio’s syaff had ever dealt with; it seemed only izabella, their biggest challenge so far, could rival her. she had a lot to learn, and don’t get it twisted - the mare was almost too smart for her own good, but the first thing she needed to learn was that there was more to her identity than running before she could move forward with anything else.
xxxxthat began with the mare who was trailered into adagio equestrian shortly after her own arrival. louie had never seen something so beautiful.
