name: Jack “Kerosene Jack” Foster Zenith
What's the process behind their behavior?
:
Jack is a go-getter, smart enough to weigh the risks but daring enough to defy them. That’s why they call him Kerosene. He’s not exactly impulsive, per se, but he definitely lives for dangerous tasks and the hard stuff in life. Tough as nails and twice as cold, he puts himself first and is a natural bold leader who finds it nearly impossible to hold his tongue.
His Thinking Process
Step 1: Who’s it Gonna Benefit?
The first thing Jack thinks over any action is who will it benefit. Himself? Well, then, there’s a very high chance he’ll follow through. His mom? Most likely. His siblings? Well, as long as it doesn’t get in the way of his own wants and needs the he doesn’t see why not. His dad? Possibly. If it’s something he can do in order to further the mob’s goals or prove himself worthy, he’ll practically bend over backwards to do it. He wants so badly to be seen as competent, strong, and “one of the crew”.
Step 2: Is the Payoff Worth the Effort?
Jack often ponders the payoff of his actions. He’s not lazy, far from it, but if the results aren’t worth the trouble, why bother?
Step 3: How Will It Make Me Look?
Jack is intensely concerned with proving himself competent, tough, and intelligent, so if something will make him look like a fool, he’ll probably pull some strings and try to get someone else do it instead.
Step 4: How Am I Gonna Pull It Off?
Jack is very resourceful and intelligent, quick to make discoveries and link things together. He’s able to brainstorm and often finds multiple ways of doing a task, then goes with the one he likes the best (which may or may not be the one that is the wisest choice).
Many things weigh in his mind when he makes his decisions... not all having equal weight, however. He inherited his mother and father’s persuasiveness and knows how to use it manipulatively. He’s not bad, per se, but he’s definitely cunning. Jack knows this concerns his father, who’s highly religious, but he personally believes himself to be “his own man” (despite still being in his kithood). His mother, who isn’t quite as tight about morality, views him as just not choosing the right influences and hanging around the casino attached to the hotel she owns and resides in too often. Jack was taught by his mother loyalty and by his father to put others first, especially his younger sister and little brother, but he personally doesn’t see the value in this. He’s loyal to them and fiercely protective, but when they come between him and what he wants, that’s when the arguments start. And boy are the gloves off. Jack doesn’t care what methods he has to use in order to get what he wants, from sweet talk and flattery to threats to physical violence. He knows that he’s very strong and thinks that using physical force isn’t immoral in most cases, since he’s somewhat nihilistic. He is very precocious and has read lots of Kierkegaard and Niechetze and so, he thinks himself somewhat of a postmodernist.
...“I’m what you’d call... a bad influence. “...
Kerosene Jack’s always relied on nostalgia, feelings, and excitement for many of his (usually bad) decisions. He’s always had a romantic view of pirates, cowboys, and street rats. And since living in the Lost Isles, a spaceport with few regulations, a lot of freedom, and plenty of travelers means the perfect target for his little street rat gang, Jack pretty much has the world on a silver platter to go around pickpocketing, vandalizing, and causing a little bit of mayhem. This combined with little supervision from his busy mobster parents is a recipe for disaster for letting his proclivity for chaos run wild. His lack of a “filter” for his actions from ideas only exacerbates this problem.
There’s only really two ways to override his thought process: fun or anger. Kerosene Jack lives for a fight. He loves feeling challenged and not backing down. To him, it’s the best feeling in the world. He’s a rebel without a cause and loves to parade it around, especially by getting into fights with the other little street rats wandering the city. When his ego gets bruised, someone better watch out or things will be going south fast.
Extra 1:
How does he fit into my world?
Jack is the canonical son of
Acey, the Boss of the Mafia, and
Daika, a former geneticist and now a rabbi. He looks like he could be their biological son (in fact, I’ve been hoping for a kit that would capture their palette and markings just right and oddly, this kid does them both justice). The oldest, his siblings look up to him and marvel at how talented and smart he seems, albeit being a little jealous of his natural leadership skills. He’s got his mother’s charm and his father’s talent for getting out of trouble... which he seems to get into a lot. Which brings us to his nickname... why’s he called Kerosene by his friends? Well, it’s not just that fiery personality. Jack’s also a little bit... destructive. I mean sure, his mom is a mob boss but Jack is more than eager to prove himself among the ranks, much to his poor worried father’s concern. It’s gotten to the point that his mother won’t talk about any of their plans in front of him (and strictly forbids any of her underlings from doing so either) because Jack’s so headstrong, he’ll just go and do it, regardless of the risks. Anyone who’s got a problem with his family has a problem with Jack.
He loves to con people out of their money. His mom taught him how to cheat at poker and now really regrets it, as he does nothing but dupe all of his friends out of their money. He’s a stinker, but his family loves him and his siblings, though his arrogance ticks them off, think he tends to liven things up. He’s very close to Uncle Cicero, the mob’s consigliere, since they both have very similar tastes in interests, food, and clothes. He thinks of Cicero as a mentor and oftentimes, you can find Jack tailing at his heels. Cicero (who’s the antithesis of responsible adult) doesn’t mind him much, and oftentimes will let him tag along throughout the city, even on official business.
He causes a lot of trouble and has gotten his tail thrown in juvy before, but being a smart little fella, it’s hard to keep him trapped for long. He’s into mysteries and oftentimes likes to go and investigate whatever he hears through the grapevine with his little gang.
Extra 2:
A Day in the Life of Jack Foster Zenith
Jack rises to start his day later than most. After pouncing his siblings and cousin Elijah awake, the gang sets off into the city. While there’s plenty to eat at home, Jack usually swipes something to nibble on just for the fun of it, sharing only if Elijah is whiny enough to bug him into it.
And then it’s off to their latest task! Which, these days, is to steal a little space skiff of their own. I know, ambitous, isn’t it? Petty theft and pickpocketing just doesn’t seem to cut it anymore for him and he’s chomping at the bit to get a spacecraft of his own. Their previous goals were to steal a diamond necklace for Acey for Mother’s Day, find a secret hideout for their little gang (that they call The Ruby Devils), and dig their way into the stockroom of the candy store.
A few hours in and they’re feeling a bit tired and peckish. So Jack dumps a bunch of vegetables in a pot and calls it “Scrounger’s Soup”. It actually turns out quite good! A quick food-induced nap in their hideout in the city’s catacombs and the four are good to go.
After a few hours of chatting and joking in their hideaway after their ship-stealing efforts come up emptypawed, they’re heading back to the casino when they come across their rival kit gang, the Three Rat Brotherhood. Aching for a good challenge after a long day, Kerosene heckles them a bit before pouncing on their leader and getting into a scrape, ending up with nothing more than a ripped ear and a bruised tail.
As his sister and brother go spend some time with Dad, Kerosene Jack makes a beeline for his Uncle Cicero. He’s looking after the speakeasy tonight and so Kerosene Jack grabs his signature drink and joins him, hoping to get let in on some of the mob gossip between customers. He brags about his fight to which Cicero proudly gives him a hearty “attaboy”. After a while, Cicero glances at his watch and lets him know he’s not technically allowed to be here anymore, to which they both share a hearty laugh. After a while though, Jack ends up feeling a bit tired and retires off to his suite upstairs, ready for another day of mischief, hijinks, and pranks.
Extra 3:
Jack’s Favorite Recipes
He’s loves feeling “just like the adults” and has his own “mocktail” (alcohol-free, family friendly mixed drink) that he typically gets for free from Cicero at the speakeasy bar at the casino and hotel where their mafia operates out of (which is also where he resides). Here’s his recipe!
The Kerosene “Cocktail”
Makes 3 (enough for him and his siblings)
1 cup Root Beer
1 cup cream soda
Caramel or butterscotch syrup to taste
6 cherries
1/8 tsp of vanilla extract
Ice (if desired)
Mix Root beer with vanilla extract, then add in the cream soda. Pour caramel or butterscotch syrup into old fashioned or martini glasses and add ice, then pour drink into glass and stir. Skewer two cherries per glass and set on rim. Enjoy!
Since he spends much of his time running amok throughout the city, he oftentimes likes the independence of cooking for himself just to feel like “his own man”. He likes the feeling of living on his own by being able to run throughout the Lost Isles as he pleases (with the convenience of being able to rely on his powerful family at the end of the day). His favorite thing to cook for himself (and sometimes his friends, if they bribe him with shiny objects, coins, or trinkets he wants) is what he calls Scrounger’s Soup. It’s delicious, healthy, and hearty! The ingredients are down-to-earth, humble, and easy to find or scrounge up much everywhere. And the best part? It’s so easy that a lazy scrounger like him can make it! Try it for yourself sometime!
Scrounger’s Soup
Feeds six kits, Plant-based and Allergy friendly
Ingredients List:
6 cups of water
1 cup of lentils
2 onions, chopped
Minced garlic to taste
1/2 cup of carrots
1/2 cup of celery
1 cup of mushrooms
2 tablespoons of vegetable or olive oil
Salt, pepper, onion, garlic, and cayenne powder to taste
1 cube of vegetable bouillon
Dump all ingredients into a crock pot (or alternately, if you happen to be a kit in a spaceport, in a pot over a small flame). Add as much cayenne powder as you wish for (or as much heat as you can handle). Set crock pot to twelve hours on low, or 6 hours on high. Enjoy when ready!
