Barracuda "Barry" Lahey
prompt:
Barry sat along the shore staring out into the deep blue waves. The hot sun made his fur itch and the sand was trapped between his toes, but he liked it. He took in a deep breath, filling his lungs with salty sweet air and turned his face up to the sky.
He loved the beach, it was like home to him. Barry was so glad he bought that house right by the water, so he could always have a beach day every day, rain or shine, summer or winter. Being by the beach gave him a sense of peace and fulfillment in his life, but he wasn't sure why.
Barry was always drawn to the sea, something about it called him like a mother calling for her child to come back home.
There was a cold splash against his nose that caused him to quickly snap back to reality and stare down at the water coming towards his sand pile he was laying on.
"Better back up before I get caught in" he said to himself, but something told him to stay and so he did.
There Barry sat, the water coming up on his front paws. A small crab scuttled by, pausing by the big creature and then back on its way, not wondering what such a thing would be doing in its path.
"Oh, to be a crab, not a care in the world" he said in a poetic tone.
The waves were up at his chest now. Some pebbles tumbled by, and a piece of driftwood plopped into his paws. It felt cold, as seawater usually is, but it felt refreshing under the heat of the sun baking his skin. Barry closed his eyes and let the feeling of both temperatures wash over him. It was like a symphony of color under his eyelids between the light of the sun and the water.
Now the water lapped at his belly. Slowly creeping up his legs. The chill was setting in more now. It was nice. A cool breeze swept by.
Barry was finally submerged up to his neck in water, some seaweed washing past. He kept his eyes closed as yellow and blue started to turn darker and colder. He could hear the sea calling him again.
Finally he disappeared, melted and becoming one with the waves.
This was his home, a part of him now.
