As for how that happened... long story short, never groom a kitten who recently landed in a mud puddle. It does more harm (both to fur and tongue) than good.

“What are you looking for?” the Whitewing asked.

The kitten said nothing, staring up at the night sky. She marvelled at the stars… although not for the reasons anyone would expect.

“It’s time to sleep,” the Whitewing tried again.

Once again, the kitten said nothing. Her eyes flickered over to a streak in the darkness—a falling star.

The Whitewing sighed, then settled down beside the kit. His clan was a broken clan, broken from pain and death and suffering… for a kitten to feel, it wasn’t as rare as he’d prefer.

“I can’t reach,” the kitten said.

The black-furred raptor turned, blinking down at the kit. “Can’t reach what?” he asked, hoping that it was something trivial.

“...my papa,” the kitten admitted sorrowfully. “He’s up there, isn’t he?” she asked, pawing at the sky that she would never touch. “He’s up there and the stars… they’re holding him captive! But I’ll never be able to free them. Only the Condor can.”

The Whitewing winced at that old tale, wondering what his old friend would think about it. Only the Condor can. “I’m sure the stars are treating your father well, for all they’re holding him hostage,” he attempted to reassure the young one.

The kitten huffed. “They’d better be! Or I’ll… or I’ll…”

“Or you’ll grow wings and free him yourself?”

“Yeah!” the kitten laughed, though the look in her eyes made it clear that she didn’t truly believe it would ever happen. “I can’t reach high enough,” she said again, reserved.

“You won’t know that until you try,” the Whitewing encouraged. Though, don’t kill y​ourself, he thought to himself. That’s one way to reach the stars, but…

“I’m going to grow wings, or I’m going to jump really, really high,” a voice piped up suddenly. “I’m not going to turn myself into a spirit,” the kitten said vehemently as if she’d read his mind.

And so the Whitewing smiled softly. “That’s good to know. Very good to know.”

“I did it! I did it!” Xeno pranced around his little sister, a wedge of cheese --- his prize --- caught in-between his tiny jaws. His head tilted to the side, tail streaming out from behind him. Pausing to catch his breath, he turned to his sister with a toothy grin. "Wanna hear how I did it?"

"No." Xavi snorted, giving a prompt roll of her eyes. "Look, Xeno. I thought you were going to---"

"...and I bolted as fast as lightning into the bakery, zipping around that two-leg. She looked so surprised. Her eyes were so wide and..."

"Xeno--"

"After that, I jumped onto the counter... it was like the greatest jump ever. It was so high... the highest I've ever been! Even my competitor... Alaric, Adonis... well, Al-something just watched. It was perfect." He breathed a soft sigh, a faint smile of his muzzle. "Well, then I leaped off the counter --- perfect arch by the way --- and landed on the ground, leaving my competitor in the dust. Literally. Isn't that wicked?"

Xavi let out a soft huff. He was always like this. Always about his thieving abilities... even making it out to be a competition with the other alley cats around. At least the ones that dared to trifle with him. "Xeno, I---"

"Oh! I forgot to mention the big, mean nasty tom that tried to intercept me. Troll." Xeno's grin widened. "He tried to corner me into the back alley. His big hulk was in the way and---"

"Xeno..."

"... and I needed to move quick. So I came up with the perfect plan... and tricked him! I told him---"

"Xeno!"

The tom paused, managing a sheepish smile. "What?" He scratched the back of his ear. "Don't you want to hear about how I the fastest, quickest, most-intelligentest, and bestest thief of Kettering managed to pull this heist off?"

Xavi tugged a breath-in, shaking her head. "I see you haven't learned anything from our last conversation." She let out a grunt, settling down onto the soft grass. "You may be able to reach the highest counter, and jump like a rabbit---"

"Definitely."

"... but you haven't learned how to reach for humility." She snorted. "Stars, Xeno, your big ego's gonna come back for you one day. For the greatest-most intelligent-fastest thief of---"

Xeno frowned. "Wait! I improved," he protested. "At least I didn't say the greatest thief this time! I used best. See improvement?" Huffing, he tried to set the cheese down, frowning as it clung to his jaws... the roof of his mouth.

Xavi chuckled, barely concealing a guffaw. "Oh, Xeno."
