constellation, twinkling bright, my companion in the night,
when the sun is shining bright, i miss your light but know you’re never far,
my companion made of light, my friends the shining stars.
the sun is one of you, i know, but it’s simply not the same,
the sun so bold, so bright, so blinding, is not nearly so quaint,
as the little twinkling beams at night which flit amongst the fireflies,
which modestly greet my gentle eyes with yellow, blue and red light.
my friends the stars are much more shy, more fleeting and more kind,
but you my dear constellar are of a different kind.
you fleeting sweet, you yellow glow, are much alike a star,
but closer are you yet to earth than those that are so far.
you mingle with us mortal folk, your stellar eyes so bright,
you are a star amongst the people, constellar, oh starry thine.
your lovely locks of golden hair so much alike to stellar fire,

One source, thrown like dice on shimmering membranes
to take root in them and sprout out
like seedlings, all fresh, all new.

A cohesive organism, always the same
eyes, nose, soft curls, curling horns.
And yet...
everyone in your life sees a different version of you.
To a stranger, a sibling, a partner,
you are a different amalgam of personality traits.
From the same source, a thousand fractals of you
split and halved and halved once more,
with each other you meet, you are split again.

Divided or multiplied?
Each golden ray is unique and beautiful, but
is it part of the whole, or a whole all its own?
Is the you you see in the mirror the whole,
or the you your parent sees the whole,
just as valid as its other halves?

Does the answer truly matter?
When you gaze upon a star,
you do not discount its beauty because of the distance it has traveled,
because the light is ancient and old.
You appreciate its glimmer in the night,
you write stories about it and its brethren,
and you see yourself and your ancestors in its shine.
You are a star, a prism, a beam of light on golden wings.
A whole, a piece, many halves of the same,
Perfect.

I hope my poem isn't too long, I had a lot of fun writing it and got. a bit carried away !
